You should force yourself to retire consoles more often

Octopath Traveler

I got all 8 Travelers!  Current party is: Alf, Oph, Therion, and Olby.  I even got the Merchant and Warrior sub jobs, and that's been a blast.  Gave Merchant to Olberic because it seemed like it would help him with Challenges.  Gave Warrior to Alf and have kinda made him more of a support/tank than the physical attacker he has mostly been.  Olberic is obviously still better suited to tanking with his special Defend ability, but Alf still makes a good one with Hale & Hearty and Cover equipped (his resistance to ailments help a bit here too).

Also did Alf's second chapter, which was really good.  I am loving each story vignette.  They're really well crafted and interesting, and the number of diverse locations and towns makes me very happy.
Also really enjoyed what limited party interactions there have been.  So far I've only seen 3 with Alf and the other 3 party members I'm using, and they ranged from "mostly generic" (with Olby) to "legitimately hilarious and charming" (with Ophilia).

What a fantastic game.

Octopath Traveler

Primrose got Giant Boar'd.  She'll need to recuperate on the sidelines for a bit.  That means H'aanit stays in the lineup for a while longer.

Still not to Borderfall yet!  Just did a couple sidequests.  This is how slowly I have to play games.  Grr.

Still, doing the sidequests led to me a nice moment where the game told me "You Summoned Lost Grandfather".  Never thought I would do that.

Gotta try for a 1 game/month average.

That's the dream!  Although with my only exclusively playing long RPGs, finishing one every two months is hardly doable.  Maybe at the end of December I'll list my "half-finished" games at the bottom of my completion list here.

Octopath Traveler

Have now recruited Ophilia, the Cleric.  Definitely cried a little during her backstory.  Very sweet and touching.  I was very curious what her "Path Action" would be; she recruits NPCs, like Primrose.  Ok then.  I guess I was complaining about only being able to have one NPC, so... cool!  Ophilia's works a little differently than Prim's, though.  While the Dancer has a % chance to "Allure", Ophy "Guides" people with 100% success rate... as long as she is high enough level.  If not, then no chance.  So Prim's has an element of risk attached to it (you can lose reputation in town if you fail too often) while Ophy's does not.

I found an NPC in Ophilia's hometown, Flamesgrace, whose ability was something called "Wisdom of the Church".  Sounded awesome so I had to use him; turns out that move is a nice multi-stat buff.  Once you summon him and get the buff (on a random character, it seems) he sticks around and does a two-hit Fire elemental attack, which also helped against a few enemies.  This game is freaking awesome.

Time to go do up some sidequests and such and then it's off to Bolderfall!

Octopath Traveler

Started with Alfyn.  He's pretty cool!  His VA is the same as Raz from Valkyria 4, so that makes me happy.  And I always enjoy "Chemist" jobs, especially ones with "Mix" type skillsets.  I tend to hoard items, but I do try to make myself use Alf's "Concoct" from time to time.

Went on to get Pokemon Trainer H'aanit, who's pretty great.  I enjoy the monster capturing and summoning.  Could not be more in love with her village and surrounding area.  She died against her boss, though, so she gets bumped to the bottom of the list.  Still in my party for now, though.

Just finished up getting Primrose and completing her first chapter on my lunch break.  The heck.  That was pretty gross, but at least I'm sufficiently motivated.  Also, I love her ability to recruit NPCs!  NPC recruiting is another favorite of mine (thank you, Blitzball), but I do wish Prim's Allure wasn't so limited.  Being stuck with only one at a time can make some missions more unwieldy than is necessary.

1. Tales of Xillia 2
2. Trails of Cold Steel
3. Ni No Kuni 2
4. Trails of Cold Steel 2

5. Valkyria Chronicles 4

This is slow-going, but I'm basically finished with it.  It's pretty much the perfect sequel to VC1 and the story is actually better than I expected.  There are some "morally gray" themes that actually aren't completely mishandled, which is nice for an "anime" RPG.

I have to admit that the Valkyria formula of throwing greater and greater odds at you for you to overcome really stresses me out, but it does feel good when you finally overcome them.  It's just tough starting another battle after finishing one.

Valkyria 4 does an excellent job of balancing its new class, Grenadiers, even though at times it does feel like they're a little overpowered.  However, rarely does it ever feel like it's balanced against the player.  Once you learn to think around Grenadiers, they're almost always an advantage for you.  I just made sure I prioritized the killing of all enemy Grenadiers as soon as possible, heh.

One thing that VC4 really does better than VC1 is in its Squaddies.  The recruitable characters here ALL have their own (optional) story chapters that you unlock by using them in battle.  It's something VC1 was begging for, since it had such interesting and well designed "generic" units.  So to see VC4 really step up to the plate in this area was fantastic.

I don't have many real complaints with the game.  One is that the interface is still stuck in 2007, like the original.  The other is that the "true" ending is locked behind beating the final boss on Hard mode, which is kind of a dealbreaker for me.  Other than that, this is about as perfect as VC1!

Up Next: Octopath Traveler?

Note: I meant to post this here and instead posted it in the Game Journal thread. Sorry.

My only trepidation with Xenoblade 2, @Rook , is those painfully -excruciatingly- awful, ugly, hideous character designs and the gacha mechanics.  Really took the shine off of my anticipation for that title.

On the upside, Elma's in it, so... I'll probably check it out sometime.
