Single-Player RPGs / Re: Things you can't bear in a JRPG

I think RPGs in general that have playable casts surpassing the number of allowable characters in combat should have some sort of incentive for using characters that would normally be neglected, like in the Shining Force GBA remake where characters reveal backstory about the game's world or themselves when you level them up. However, it can be hard in the series as a whole to level weaker characters if they do only 1 damage against enemies or die easily, which is why I also think grinding should be fun and easy, and proportional experience systems like Suikoden are in some respects preferable.

Kingdom Hearts Union X - Still waiting for the next story mission update, and have done the latest Agrabah missions.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I'm in the flying Divine Beast after taking down its exterior cannons.

Resonance of Fate - Still in Chapter 14, farming coins at the arena. I got a ton of crap to sell for money, so my monetary problems are more or less resolved.

Yakuza 0 - I think I'm in Chapter 6, progressing along smoothly.

Right now, I'm working on The Wings of War series by Bryce O'Connor, which focuses on a dragon character known as an atherian who grows with humans and becomes a mercenary. Fairly enjoyable thus far.

Also rereading The Wheel of Time books. I've just reread New Spring, but it was *way* better than I remember.

I also returned to The Sword of Truth after a few months of hiatus (and finished Faith of the Fallen), and I can sort of understand criticisms with it, since I notice that hardly anything happens throughout the dozens of chapters, and Goodkind really needed a better editor since punctuation errors are very common.

I finished the second season of Ruroni Kenshin. The protagonist sort of reminds me of Batman with his no-kill policy, and there are definitely some great battles. I'm watching the dub, which I don't mind, since there are some occasional ethnic-looking and sounding Japanese, alongside characters like the broomhaired guy who sounded like a Southerner, reminding me too of Disney's Robin Hood where the Sheriff of Nottingham had a Southern drawl.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I beat the boss of the aquatic elephant Divine Beast, which wasn't too hard since I had plenty healing items (almost all of which are a bit advanced for my current health), although I did somewhat have to look at a guide to get an idea on how to find the dungeon's terminals. Now I'm back to exploring.

Resonance of Fate - I managed after a few tries to beat the arena battle with the four ailment-inflicting ogres, and the matches afterward, surprisingly, have been really smooth sailing, with the main game having generally had schizophrenic difficulty. I recently grinded for some green hexes so I could link terminals to the arena, and intend to farm some more so I can get more terminals connected to get the most out of fighting in the arena.

Yakuza 0 - I'm somewhat annoyed that it took me nearly half an hour to get my first save opportunity (having missed the save point after the opening scenes), but the combat is enjoyable and the graphics good aside from no lip movement during a certain type of cutscene and the inability to scroll through much of the dialogue.

BTW, @Aeolus, what's LoZ:TH?

Legend of Zelda: Triforce Heroes.

I was posting about it a little while back, before I started digging in to RS2. I'm only really playing this one now because its kinda infamously unplayable without three people and the online died shortly after launch. Right now I've lucked into some randoms and I'm hoping to ride them for as long as I still can.
Ah, okay. I played some more Breath of the Wild this evening and have to soothe the water beast with shock arrows, but I got somewhat confused when I was tasked with getting twenty shock arrows, since apparently after looking at a guide I found that I only needed to put out the four orbs on the beast's back. I didn't finish the battle since I didn't know how long it would take, but I don't like it when games leave you confused like that.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Moving along smoothy and am progressing to the Zora's Domain, after getting another stamina upgrade so I can scale higher areas.

Resonance of Fate - Encountered a difficulty drop in Chapter 13 where I simply had to give presents to children, but it shot straight back up even more in Chapter 14, where even normal encounters in the next story dungeon are kicking my butt. I am slightly racking up breakable items and to a lesser extent levels, and when I get enough hexes of a certain color I might link them to the arena and try it again (I'm stuck on a battle with four ailment-inflicting ogres).

BTW, @Aeolus, what's LoZ:TH?

Yeah, topical references definitely tend to date videogames, the same going for TV shows.

Yeah, ability to die and get a game over after final bosses = one of the worst ideas ever.

There was also an Obvious Beta part of Arc the Lad II where character sprites in a town are invisible after beating the nearby dungeon.

I can sort of emphasize with Harry since I was fairly troubled as a youth, and while Harry Potter house quizzes mostly put me in Ravenclaw, I'd probably have been right at home in Slytherin since I was delinquent and rebellious at the ages I would have attended Hogwarts.

I also recently finished The Elfstones of Shannara and am (re)watching The Shannara Chronicles on Netflix since I tend to half-watch shows when they originally aid.

Matrix Software has created games other than those listed, and their quality to me tends to be hit-or-miss, so I can't say I'm excited for their latest title. By the way, I don't think Working Designs' translations are all that great, to be honest. In the original Lunar games and their remakes, for instance, they say "Mel founded Meribia" instead of just "Mel governs Meribia" like he does in the original Japanese version of the titles, which contradicts the spinoff manga that says Meribia is over a century or so old. There's also dialogue like "The world will once again be mine on a delicious half-shell." Sorry, but if movies had dialogue like that, they'd get torn apart by critics. The Lunar 2 remake also had really shitty, unnatural battle dialogue. I also didn't care much for the fact that they left the Japanese voicework in the Arc the Lad games intact, which sounded more like gibberish than actual Japanese.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I've found a few of the memory locations, and am working on the shrines topping the Dueling Peaks.

Resonance of Fate - Ugh. Have to fight a boss in Chapter 12 with just one character, and while I've been able to get far, a combination of the helicopter boss itself and the ground troops get me. I sold a lot of materials I don't need to get a new machine gun, and purchased a crapload of upgrades, maxing out my best pistol and machine gun, and will give it another go. Can't wait for this game to be over.

Yeah, and not all Slytherins are necessarily bad, such as Horace Slughorn and Nymphadora Tonks' mother Andromeda.

Harry also is a bit of a jerkass in later entries, but I think he had every right to be, given what he went through.

I'm rereading the Harry Potter books (which I haven't read since the last main one came out), and damn, they definitely pack quite a punch, as I've been able to write detailed reviews on each. The franchise has issues, for sure, but I like how the books grew with their readers.

I've also been working on the Shannara books in chronological order, and got through The Sword of Shannara and its prequel/sequel short stories. I can definitely see how Sword has been accused of being a Lord of the Rings ripoff.

I absolutely adore this track from the first Dragon Quest Monsters:
And the English version of "Nocturne" from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night's soundtrack:
