It was probably Pokemon for me as well. I'd probably seen some other anime prior to that, but didn't know it was anime. After Pokemon it was DBZ, and that is what turned me onto anime completely. I followed DBZ religiously for several years in the late 90s and early 00s until the series ended on Toonami.

It is possible I saw Akira before I started watching Pokemon, but I don't know for sure. It was somewhere in that time frame because I remember seeing it after playing Ocarina of Time at a friend's house.

Yikes.  That should never happen.

^ It has, and does. I saw Akira way before I checked out Pokémon. The latter I turned off after 5 minutes, and never bothered with again. I will personally never understand the draw to that cartoon for anyone over 5. Didn't help that some creature was complaining that its balls were sore.

As for my case, a friend let me borrow his dubbed copy of the original 3x3 Eyes OVA back in the day. I was like, "Hell yes! More of this!". Right after that, it was the quintessential Akira, and also Dirty Pair: Flight 005 Conspiracy.

I just meant that Akira is definitely not a kid's cartoon, and Pokemon is.

I just meant that Akira is definitely not a kid's cartoon, and Pokemon is.

And not everybody here were kids when Pokemon started/became accessible through their cable/satellite provider.

Besides, I can forgive someone for not wanting anything to do with Pokemon after that horrible Season 2/Orange League bullshit.

Also, you weren't a kid in the 90s unless you were finding tentacle porn on the kidz video shelf at your local movie rental joint.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

^ welp, this just reminded me of this bizarre OVA I watched when I was about 7.  Something something spacesuits and mechas. Something something flesh eating virus. End of the world. Something something main character somehow reborn as one of only two people left on what I seem to remember as Earth. Something something strong implications of incest.

This strikes me as even stranger (somehow) that my dad let me watch this even though he wouldn't let me watch Full House because he was convinced that Joey and Jesse were gay (and that watching them on TV would infect me with their gay irl).

I was fourteen when Pokemon began airing in the US and I watched that first season. I honestly found the first season to be really good. I was still in the habit of watching Saturday morning cartoons back then even if I didn't really care for most of them by that point in my life. Pokemon came on and I enjoyed it enough to keep watching through that first season. I agree, though, that as soon as the Orange League nonsense started in season 2 I stopped watching. I discovered DBZ shortly afterward when I was channel surfing and wondering what on Earth a show with that title could be about. Honestly, the only reason I gave it a chance was -- since I didn't really understand what anime was back then -- I thought the art resembled Pokemon. If not for that, I'd probably never have gotten into anime and manga like I did.

After doing some digging I see that OoT came out in November of 1998 and I'm pretty sure I was already watching Pokemon and DBZ by then. That means I would've seen Akira likely in December 1998 or early in 1999, so it wasn't my first anime experience.

Sounds like it could be Fight! Iczer 1.

I'm a grown ass adult and I still watch Pokemon. It's a guilty pleasure of mine.

The show still continues its trend of high quality animation and storytelling, as depicted in the shot below from a recent episode:

I was thinking more along the lines of Virus Buster Serge, but A) that isn't an OVA, and B) there's like another 2 dozen or so anime series/OVAs out there that have similar premises.

Also Orange League happened in the 3rd (4th? maybe both) season of Pokemon because it was made in between the original Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold & Silver's releases. Hence why everyone treated Ash's victory over Kanto as literally no big deal. Season 2 was entirely filler because the first season got to the Sixth Gym and the developers basically went "Hold on. This shit's popular, but we're almost literally out of plot. Quick, crap out an entire season of filler!". Then season 3 started with taking Cinnabar Island's Gym to task and concluding with either the take down of the Elite 4 or the start of the fucking Orange League.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

Hmm you know I think I maybe saw Vision of Escaflowne and Vampire Hunter D around the same time... I still think DBZ was definitely "first" though... it's, er, been awhile.

The original Dragonball during one of it's earlier, pre-Cartoon Network-era runs, tho i was super young and my mom didn't want me watching it cause Bulma was all pervy or w/e.

Then I got into DBZ in fifth grade and was like oh gosh this is probably contraband :<<<

by the way

the first time you read "anime" did you have it rhyme with lime?

(The first time I saw the word was in some... I wanna say Secret of Evermore FAQ, when I was in 3rd or 4th grade or so I thought "anime" was just some weird websp33k word for the player character's sprites in a JRPG)

The first time I read anime was after the first time I heard the word, so no.
