@Aeolus Don't stop doing merc mission.  Points carry over to the next level even if you haven't beaten the quest yet and you need 20k for rank 5 eventually.  Takes a while.

I was wondering if I had asked this question earlier or not. Fortunately, I finally powered through the Rank 3 Quest quickly enough once I had some time to actually spend on the game (and not continue to be hooked on Tiger! Tiger!). Two levels are a hell of a drug in this game (it also helped that I targeted the Axe Guy first since the Lance Guy is more Counter Happy).

Also, I should recommend to everyone playing to buy the Deed for the Fabric Store in Merc Village ASAP as it provides an extra 5% boost to Running Speed. There's a ton of ground to cover in Chapter 5's territory and not very many Landmarks to quick travel to, so every little bit helps.

Literally the worst waypoint/map system in any video game I have ever played.
Astonishing.

Aren't they fixing that, though? I know I saw an article on that somewhere...

And in looking to the future, I'm looking forward to the new Eluveitie album.  Thanks again to some of the folks here at RPGFan for introducing me to that band.

Their single "Rebirth" (released two months ago) straight up scorches, particularly those guitar solos.  The band lost some prominent members (including vocalist and hurdy gurdy player Anna Murphy), but with a revamped lineup, including a powerful new siren in Fabienne Erni, this song "Rebirth" is the heaviest I've ever heard this band.  And I love it!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-pSq4MJmy8

I liked the main plot thread with the Force users well enough. It had some neat subversions but one in particular I'm still not sure of.

(Ultra Mega Spoilers below, read at your own risk)

Spoiler: show
Snoke being out of the game so early in the plot is somewhat shocking (Though they made it a bit too predictable 5 seconds prior with Rey's lightsaber rotating- I get that it was to preserve continuity in the scene but I feel it kinda ruined what was meant to be a big plot twist. If they didn't have that shot it wouldn't be that hard to figure out what happened. Or, hell, a more subtle lightsaber rotating in a wide shot of Snoke instead of that close-up would've worked too) but it seems like something of a mistake. I really liked Kylo Ren as the enforcer villain and I found him compelling, but I don't feel he'll work as the main villain at all. Part of the reason he worked for me was precisely that he was not the main villain, because Snoke filling the role of being the real menace freed up Kylo Ren to be a more pitiful character.

I guess I'll see what they do with it though.

Didn't really like the Finn/Rose side plot.

Spoiler: show
I kinda get what they were trying to do with how it ended up, but I thought it really dragged the movie down. It somewhat ended up like a "had to give them something to do" plot. Wouldn't be a problem if it was interesting on its own, but I didn't find the casino planet interesting at all. I also didn't really get a good feel of Rose's character. Personality-wise she felt kinda bland, I don't feel her presence helped develop Finn, and her actions at the end of the movie just made her seem really short-sighted and dumb.

The romance angle felt really tacked-on too. I didn't really feel like they bonded during the scenes on the planet at all, Rose just dumped some backstory on Finn.

Also I really, really, dislike the Disney-Marvel style of comic relief here. Some of it did work okay when it felt like it was something the character might otherwise say, but other times it just deflated all the drama. Comic relief was in all the films too, but in the good ones they felt like they flowed naturally from the dialogue and the characters instead of obvious jokes that completely ruin the tone.

Can't do worse than Jar Jar Binks I suppose, though the mid-section of the movie did have the headscratching inclusion of some CGI abominations that were oddly reminiscent of some special edition changes/the prequels.

Star Wars.

Utter fucking garbage.

So much pointless, wasted plot in that movie.

Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal

Yep, it's basically a series made for a new generation of readers. My youngest writer entered the scene a couple of years ago, and he's pretty fond of the manga. Meanwhile, all my older writers including myself have absolutely zero patience for Black Clover, because to us it's yet another remix of the tried and true Shonen Jump recipe. We just want to watch series about cyborg grampas and dictionary makers, and yell at kids to get of our lawn.

That said, the writers in my generation also have a shonen series or two they grew up with that's special to them. I have a soft spot for Bleach and Inu Yasha, and I know someone who's really happy right now, because his old favourite is suddenly getting a brand new anime adaptation next season.

Speaking of shonen, I got the first volume of Astra Lost in Space to review and that turned out to be a surprisingly fun read. It starts out with a wellknown premise: kids get stranded in some deserted place and try to get home. But in space. Lots of things about their situation are suspicious, and they need to get along to survive, but one of them might be a mole. There are plenty of clichés (heroine is a ditz, hero yells a lot), but the author makes it work by either turning them upside down (main guy does have actual survival skills and leadership abilities) or having characters outgrow their archetype by means of character development. It's nothing groundbreaking (and the answers to the mysteries could make or break the story), but it's a good start and I want to stick with it to see where it goes. It's 6 or 7 volumes, I think? Once I'm done with them, I could probably hand them over to my younger cousin who's just gotten into reading comics in English.

General Games / Re: Fire Emblem Heroes

Fortunately(?), I';m running low on fodder. I could really use some of the common units that give skills like Reposition, Moonbow/Luna, Fury and so on. It's unlikely I'll get nothing worthwhile.

Well, do keep in mind that if you average everything out you get like 1 focus unit per 120 orbs or something similar, so if luck's not on your side you could dump everything and have nothing to show for it.
