Kinda off topic, but not really, has anybody heard anything about that PSP phone?

I assume you mean the Xperia Play, for which there is tons and tons of news.  In fact, doesn't in come out in a few weeks?  Do a Google search.

The Xperia Play is not a 'PSP phone', however.  From what I understand it doesn't even play PSP games.

I wouldn't call it useless at all.  The real star isn't the phone itself, but rather then Playstation Suite software for Android.  PSS has the potential to address the fragmentation that has always plagued the Android platform and make it more viable for game developers to target.  I think Sony was smart not to try to take on the phone gaming market by themselves, because otherwise they would just be producing another N-Gage, and we know how successful that was.  The success of this platform is contingent on getting a wide variety of handset makers to submit to Sony's certification process, however, and it remains to be seen if that will actually happen.

This is still mainly about phone games, though.  But as we have seen in RPGFan's coverage there are more and more serious phone games these days.  It's becoming harder to ignore them (I'm still pretty good at it, though).

Personally I have no interest in any of this.  But there is a bonus:  The NGP will run PSS software too.  That means that in the future you won't have to miss out on a game that's just released for phones.

Just so I'm clear, this will not run PSN software right? It's not a PSP Go with a built in phone, it's something new. I couldn't play Crimson Gem Saga or Tactics Ogre on it, just whatever getss released for that platform. That was my understanding based on what I saw.

It's still useless in my book, for now. Same with the 3ds. Pointless until something I actually want to play drops on it (Zelda + Master Quest for the win)

Back on topic, what makes this game so great? I haven't seen anything too original about it.

It's probably not a bad idea if you're shopping for an Android phone, and assuming it's reasonably priced (with contracts of course) in America. I imagine/hope it's still a pretty good smartphone so if Sony's idea doesn't take off then it's not a big loss.

To answer your question: this game's selling point is the story. According to my sources, including one of the game's translators who frequents the game's board on GameFAQS, Trails' story has a well-crafted world, and a story that's so well told that it could actually work as a Fantasy Novel. (How true this is will be determined upon actual release, but the story should still be quite good.) The characters are a fine point as well, even if some of them may seem cliche at first. Of course, this is a game, so it should be fun to play, and while Trail's isn't the most gameplay oriented of titles, it does have over 50 sidequests via a Guild, AKA 'The Bracer's Guild'; the battle system is fun as well. I actually know this personally; you can find a download-able Japanese demo at the link below. You won't understand what's going on, and the game won't tell you how to use the battle-system, but you can still try it out for yourself.

Bottomline, Trails' looks to be great on all accounts, and I for one, am definitely picking it up upon release. =)

Thanks santa.
I had checked out that link on the first page but nothing really jumped out at me. Since I'm in the middle of an excellent portable game with plenty of hooks (story, time travel, battle system) I was pretty much looking for a spelled out explanation of what the hooks are in this one. Without a review though, that's pretty tough considering it's dependant on story.  That helped a lot.

Has anyone heard back from XSeed about the free promotion item if you preorder Trails in the Sky? I preordered and let them know I wanted the artbook for Ys but haven't heard back from them. Thought maybe they would just reply back saying they received your request or thanks for preordering your free item is on the way. But it has been a week and no word.

I still haven't heard back from XSeed. Has anyone? Maybe they don't contact you back. Maybe they just send out your free item.

Good website; very informative, so much so that it took over 25 minutes to read through the whole thing. ^__^

Also, I've discovered information about the party system, or lack thereof; Trails (FC) is one of those RPG's where party members come and go. Aside from one bit where you have to use two teams, you'll always have two characters with you at all times; the protagonist and her best friend/adopted brother. The other 6 playable characters (amounting for 8 in total, ending with the character Zane on the website,) enter and leave your party as the plot demands, with the exception being the final dungeon, where you can choose from any of the characters to be in your endgame party. (Except for the protagonist most likely, of course, who you probably won't have a say about.) And while we won't get SC for who knows how long, this all changes come that game; while there are some exceptions that are related to the plot, you will usually be able to change your party, from that game all the way until the end of The 3rd. (And the amount of total party members actually increases in size, all the way up to 16 by the end of The 3rd!)

Just thought that some people might be interested to know. =)

No plans for PC release?  :(
While I appreciate xseed for bring the Trails series to the US, its kinda sad that the only way to play this epic RPG is on a tiny screen with sub par graphics (compared to PC version).

They could do digital DL only *hint hint*

You could hold out hope that the success of Recettear convinces Falcom to allow Steam releases of these games with translations. Possibly other publishers too, but it doesn't seem there is much in regards to PC development in Japan that isn't visual novels/porn BUT Falcom's output... which is now gone.

By the way: I haven't received any replies myself on the pre-order thing. Kinda want that Lunar CD since I got the DL version on sale and it's the only thing in the package I wanted anyway.
