Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPG Fan Decides My Next Game
« on: January 17, 2018, 07:39:48 PM »
I'm not at all surprised that some of my selections to add to this poll aren't exactly universally loved.  But they're games I am really interested in experiencing for myself.

For Bravely, that Job System will get me to forgive a LOT.  And for SO, I'm just interested in getting to play around with another SO battle system after so many years.  If I am not enjoying a game, I will just stop playing it.  I have no qualms about leaving a bad game unfinished, so length doesn't matter much to me.

People tell me that BD2 is better, and its cheaper now. Not that I'll never know for sure. You may like the job system, but you may not like the battle system. Its FF1's battle system only you can "DEFAULT!!!!WEEEEEE!@@!!!!@!!!!!!" which means skip a turn to have a stronger hit the next turn. I gave up after about 15 hours but even with the job system it still just seems like you are going to end up with a tank, a black + white mage, and someone who likes to punch things.

littered with crap like the original .//Hack quadlogy,

Over on the .hack PS4 MBs a ton of people who never played the original .hack are clamoring for it and saying its the one that should been remastered. "ITS THE ORIGINAL STORY, IT MUST BE BETTER! WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US BANCO?!" Oh honey no, I try to tell them. You'll have more enjoyment just imagining that somewhere there is this mythical masterpiece of videogaming out there that you can't afford, instead of actually you know playing the game. The original .hack is dated out of existance and no "HD remaster" is saving it. Its actually a pretty terrible game(s), and this is coming from someone who liked the original .hack.

I am Sestuna just seemed like every bad RPG story ever, so yea I see what you are getting at.

I know you guys are joking around, but damn...I liked both Star Ocean 4 and Bravely Default. Kinda weird for me to see people shooing others away from them, especially when it's already clear that they showed enough interest to buy them in the first place. At some point, you just gotta try to get some value outta what you bought...and that's if he winds up sharing your opinions of them.

I've almost bought SO4 multiple times. With the exception of the VAs the trailer looks good. I really liked SO3 too (more than SO2). I think whats holding me back isn't that from what I read that it might be bad, but that it will be bad and 70 hours long.

I HATED Bravely Default. I bought it on launch day but I should have known. I never really liked the FFesque job system except in FFX-2 and FFT (some people do, personal taste). Grinding is rarely ever fun anymore especially w/ a battle system that IMO wasn't fun. Plus the characters were annoying. Graphics were good tho, and I did sell it on amazon for a miniscule profit. So there is that and according to reviews its seems like I'm in the minority thinking that its lousy.

Star Ocean IV? Are you just checking to see if anyone here hates you?

I also see a vote for Bravely Default. Your enemy list keeps piling up.

I'm voting for World of Final Fantasy just to hear somebody have an actual take on this, even if our interests don't necessarily align that often.

Its fun and a very competent monster raising game. They did make a mistake with making the FF characters a special attack instead of a 3rd party member. Also Digimon Cybersleuth is just a tad better.

Voted Trails of Cold Steel because its an all-time great. Its long as hell though and you'll probably go directly into CS2 after finishing it. So your next 160hrs of gaming are probably set.

And yet still we have WARGARBLLLLL WHERE MAH CHRONO TRIGGER and FF6?!?! crowd. News flash: they even remade your CT and FF6 like-games you always wanted. Its called I am Sestuna and Bravely Default. Oh and both those games are trash grindfests but I'm sure they'd be incredible where they belonged, in 1994. You are even getting your Secret of Mana. Oh and here comes a new Dragon Quest, whose archaic battle system and barebones story will probably bore you to tears by hr. 30.  RETRO JRPG MASTER RACE R U NOT ENTERTAINED?

Calling you out on this. Bravely Default was a poor substitution (even before getting into the second half, or the original JP version) and I am Gundam! was pretty much a publisher funded College Student's Grad Project (littered with plagiarism, completely tonedeaf, had only one moderate hook to run into the ground, horribly unbalanced, and just shabby all around). Hence why Bravely Second is a game that most people only consider to have existed at one time, but isn't talked about much, and nobody listed Lost Spheda (I could be wrong, its been a while since I checked) in their Anticipated Games of 2018 Thread posts.

Besides, for every CT/FFVI fanboi still griping about the lack of sequels, you still have plenty of Suikoden fandom clamoring for a true Suki VI, or Level 5 fans wishing for lightning to strike the same place twice for Dark Cloud 3, or Shadow Hearts fans waiting for the IP to fall into someone else's hands.

wait wut? I am Sestuna was plagarized? The only dialogue I remember is go here and get that. How the hell do you plagarize that?

I mean I wouldn't mind a Suikoden sequel either (though I didn't like 4-5). I also wouldn't mind a Phantasy star 5 (assuming Sega could make a good PS5). Its just that I feel people are making games similar to the 90s games (the DS has a few) only they aren't that good because its not the early 90s anymore and that kind of gameplay just doesn't fly. Also I kind of feel like people have kind of taken this gen for granted because much of the games coming out are pretty damn good. Maybe I'm having a hard time explaining myself or maybe I'm babbling nonsense becuase my head is full of medicine as I've been in bed for 2 days with the flu. dunno.

Unfortunately, I was 7 when it came out and I had to throw a shitfit to even get my parents to buy me a SNES.  Then by the time I was old enough to afford a Sega CD it was already too expensive.

I'm sure my experience is not unique.

My Sega CD broke in 9 months. Which is I think about the median life of the 1st gen Sega CDs.

@Rook

Re: FPS Games - I think it's fairer to say that the EA's, Activision's, and Ubisoft's combined greed have swelled into a supermassive blackhole inside the industry. It's not just FPS games that have been hurt by recent lootbox and Pay2Win shinanegans, after all.

Plus, there's still good FPS games that have come out in the last 4 years or so, with the latest being Wolfenstein II.

RE: RPG talk - What?

Yea its swelling into other games, thankfully it hasn't been the ones I've been playing....yet. As far as FPSs go I'm sure there are still good ones out there if that's your cup of tea. The ones that are more single player oriented haven't been hit hard with hardcore loot boxing.

My point about RPG games is that right now especially in JPRGs the recent slate has been excellent. On sites like neogaf etal people constantly complain that JRPGs aren't what they used to be and yes for much of the PS3 era it was lousy, no one denies this.  However since then they've come roaring back and the scene is arguably as great as its ever been if they just give the new games a chance.

That stated, what astounds me on a personal level as a gamer is this proved another entry in my "klyded top 10 games ever". A year ago that list would have almost entirely have been populated with titles quite old and I sit typing this now knowing full well Mario Odyssey, Nier Automata, FF XV and Horizon Zero Dawn all would make the cut.

By golly, I'm beginning to think this hobby is becoming more enjoyable as the years roll by.
Just took the developers all these years to really knock em out of the park for me the way they did in the 16-32 bit era. In reflection now, I finally feel comfortable stating that post that era (moving into the 3rd dimension, realism and polygons) really did begin a loooong, awkward and UGLY leg of gaming history for me. I guess what I'm trying to say is this hobby really was not as fun or pretty looking as it was when I was a kid for some time but it sure is now (and then some).

Sure there are a ton of things about to complain about in gaming. FPSs are eating themselves with pay to play. Which doesn't bother me really, FPSs suck (just a personal preference, if they are your thing then cool, but I'm right). Sports games are falling into this trap too, which kind of saddens me.

We've been in a golden age of games and JPRGs in general for a few years now and sometimes it seems like oldz like myself don't want to believe it. There are good games in every genre that you enjoy that seem to coming out by the week.

And yet still we have WARGARBLLLLL WHERE MAH CHRONO TRIGGER and FF6?!?! crowd. News flash: they even remade your CT and FF6 like-games you always wanted. Its called I am Sestuna and Bravely Default. My fav top 10-20 is now overrun with great games from 2014 to present day.

Finished Life is strange Before the Storm 9.5/10. Brilliant game (PLAY IT!), its another one that going to be in my top 20. I loved it even though I only played ep 1 of LoS a while ago. I somehow got the secret ending and wasn't even trying for it.

March Comes in Like a Lion (season finished):  This series has a way of punching its fist through my ribcage, wrapping its fingers around my heart, and squeezing.  The artwork is good, too.

I stopped at around ep 18. I just didn't find the MC to be interesting at all.

Man, Made in Abyss was a terrific watch and the manga is great too.

The 1st few episodes were slow but damn it got so good. Speaking of which Anime Strike is dead. You can watch everything on prime now. So go watch Made in Abyss and Garden of Sinners now.

Currently I'm watching Altair: Record of Battles and 7 eps in its been very good.
