Well that's disappointing, for me anyway.  They really couldn't bother porting it to the Vita or 3DS?

Its the GBA port of a dungeon crawling JRPG. Who cares? As long as its localized, it'll probably make the rounds to other devices.
Atlus should care.  I imagine most of the fans overseas would rather see it on a platform with buttons.  They could even do a SMT IV and I promotion, maybe in time for when it hopefully reaches Europe.

Atlus USA can *only* localize what exists in Japan first. Japan put it on iOS, Atlus USA can localize that. And *only* that. They want it on eShop, they need to wait for Atlus JAPAN to do it first.

Whatever, in any case I have an iPod Touch and I'm-a play the crap out of this.

Gotta start somewhere. Fantastic news, and I'm overjoyed to see Atlus acknowledge SMT1. Time to find me an iOS device.

Saw the SMT news on their Facebook page. In a fit of ignorance, I read some of the comments.

Yuck.

Is like nobody remembers how some SMT fans also said 'Yuck' when SMT IV was announced for 3DS.

Well, I think at that point people were getting tired of SMT games on handhelds and were expecting the mainline game in the series to be on consoles - especially after Catherine.

This? Nobody's happy with this. IOS just makes no sense for a game like this.

But it is literally the only platform Atlus USA can release it on and expect to make anything close to a profit. The first Shin Megami Tensei has been released on: Android, Game Boy Advance, iOS, PC Engine, PlayStation, Mega-CD, Super Famicom, and Virtual Console. Of all of those, the only ones that make sense are iOS, Android, and VC. I assume people would complain just as much if it went to the VC as SNES support hasn't been rolled out for the 3DS version, and the Wii market place possibly being shut down (I think its just online play?).

So really it makes perfect sense to release on iOS. It's just a simple translation and release and a higher profit margin I'd imagine. If it sells well, Android will likely see it soon too.

It's kinda ugly... The semi-transparent buttons over the screen and bleed margin is...blegh.
I also hate how these iOS games feel/look like cash-ins and don't really get that much love beyond UI tweaks.  FF5/6 got a full facelift, but that was just botched surgery.

Still, it's good fans get a chance to play this and all that jazz.

And yeah given how excellent Catherine looked (even though Japanese developer's graphics get quite a bit of a bad rap), I wish we did get more.  The PS2 had a ton of awesome and brilliant looking SMT-related titles (Persona, SMT, DDS, and that detective one); the PS3 saw next to nothing.

Don't worry guys, there IS an SMT game coming to A console (albeit not a mainline title and there hasn't been more than a peep since it was announced over a year ago, but still, it has SMT in the title and it might not have had the plug silently pulled within the last 13 months).
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

At least the iOS interface of SMT1 has mock buttons.  If the iOS port of ToP had those mock buttons, it could have been semi-playable.

EDIT/ASIDE (re: Atlus but not SMT): And, not gonna lie, I still want to see Thousand Arms on the PSN shop.

Is Persona even still considered SMT?  I noticed they dropped "Shin Megami Tensei" in Persona 4 Golden and didn't notice it say SMT anywhere in Persona 5 promos.  It kinda makes sense though considering the drastically different fanbases (yes there are many people that play both, but there is a huge number of people that only play Persona).

It's why I say "umbrella" most of the time: there's clearly shared ground, but Atlus in Japan didn't market many of those as being in the same series explicitly past an installment or two. It's kind of like with Bravely Default if that had still been developed in house, or for an example that went more divergent the Mana games: they've got shared ground with Final Fantasy whether it's the creatures, the terms, or whatever, but they're not actually SOLD as FF games.
