well.. for all the "fatless gameplay" in the offline bioware RPGs... they sure did make up with Star wars the old Republic.

Just finished listening to the 39th podcast (had a fairly long trip)

first of all : Thanks to the Staff for making such enjoyable podcasts .. and this time..  special thanks to Zach pintchik for editing.

Hmm.. even though i have to admit that the monster system sounds fairly intriguing ... I will probably still skip anything ff 13ish .. since i don't really care abount the cast.

I am also looking forward to February .. and probably the Star wars the old republic Podcast ... since I would like to hear a general opinion about the game after the 30 free days of game time. I myself am still enjoying ToR a lot even though it is probably one of the buggiest games I have ever played.

I admit that there are several limitations to the ftp account , however they don't really seem to be as influential as in other mmos that have gone free to play

e.g. :
limited inventory/ bank space: usually reason enough to make a player spend some cash in dcu however you won't find as much vendor trash ... the equipment styles are stored separately so you don't have to keep any item just for the looks... you have to put it on once and you can sell it afterwards which leads me to the second aspect...

1500 $ : as a ftp player you will hit the 1,5 k $ pretty quick but since every 100 achievement points you get an additional skill point for your weapons and movement skill trees it is fairly important to collect as many styles as possible as that will also grant you achievements/ deeds .. thus there are plenty of items you can spend your money on so that you will be constantly under the cash limit.. plus  i have yet to see a vendor selling something beyond 1,5 k $

Well i myself have already paid for a 60 days gametime card ..... I just think that soe allows a little too much for free... because even though they have already announced that dcu has reached the 1 000 000 players mark since it became free to play... but they have not said much about the income.

I have been giving it a try as well.  Im a little dissapointed in the only 6 powers thing, since none of them really strike my itch (save maybe gadgets).  I havn't tried sorcery or nature yet.  I like the vast amount of weapon far I like hand blasts the best.  Finding it hard to design a character though, plenty of options, I just suck at it I think.  I just dont wanna do the typical "Oh haey lets pick black and red and now were KEWL".  I want something kinda uniqueish, but lol ><.  Anywho, havn't done a ton with it yet, but its not bad.

Well you can theoretically get the "light" power via dlc or a legendary account.. and the developers already announced that they will implement lightning and earth powers into the game.

As for the appearance of your character... well you can collect all the different styles for the equipment and change your looks sorta "on the go" .... as well as the color palette .... as a matter of fact you will get  additional "unique" styles as you progress.

What strikes me as somewhat odd.. is the fact that the free to play system does not really limit the player all that much... you get to see almost all the content of the game... I am not really sure that SOE will get that much money out of this.

Hmm just finished listening to the latest episode

dark souls lovefest aside ( :p ) ... quite mmo heavy this time around ... I think it was a good idea to let a non-mmo player comment about his beta experiences with swtor since you can also get an impression of how bioware is going to fare with newcomers.

Overall a good episode ... looking forward to the next episode ..

Will there be an episode before skyrim or would you rather rest a little bit after dark souls?

Single-Player RPGs / Re: What are your favorite innovations in RPGs?
« on: October 24, 2011, 03:51:06 PM »
For me some of the "nice" innovations were:

Some rpgs allow you to reread sections of dialogue. Sometimes you accidentally hit the wrong button at the wrong time.. and basically lose an important part of the text.. and than you realize that you saved a couple of hours ago.... which leads me directly to another useful innovation..

Autosave.. sure if you like playing the older shin megami tensei games and for example the prof. layton games.. you will get used to saving fairly frequently... but in some other games you may easily forget about saving because either the game is too easy and you don't think that you migtht actually lose or you are just consumed by the atmosphere.. and don't think about saving.

Encyclopedia/Bestiary.. it is in fact not that important... but I actually do like to look at some descriptions every now and then.. and i also like to have some sort of info about my items and my enemies.

Side quests... this is actually a fairly "old innovation" however it has yet to be perfected. Many developers still think that it is enjoyable to just stop before the final dungeon.. and maybe go pick some flowers for a while... or run the whole way back just to deliver some letters.... and yet I would still prefer it for an rpg to have additional content..

some ingame footage from the gamescom including a live raid:

beware of some parts being in German....well since it's pretty much material from a Germany.

the whole article is a little vague...

i mean let's take red dead for example ... this game is something i would consider mainstream... so i'm not exactly surprised that among all the buyers we would have only 10% of players who actually have beaten the game... which sounds like a few...but if we would know the actual number...we might see this percentage from a different perspective.

also... some of the video games that count as "bought" might be presents for kids or other people... and  they aren't "obligated" to beat the game... they don't even have to like it.

and than there is a small problem... that some games get "tougher" as you go on... and it so happens that players sometimes get stuck or too frustrated with the game... thus just do not finish the game...because playing is supposed to be done for fun... and it is normal to look for another game  if you get fed up with your current one (or so i think).

plus i don't think that this 10% work with every video game genre...would be kinda interesting to hear some genre specific estimates.

just for the record.. i have beaten about 60-65% of my games.

hmmmm... even though I am not a huge fan of the genre...i'll have to admit that Stephen made me actually care about human revolution.... than again anything that is even a tiny bit similar to shadowrun is something I'm interested in... don't know... kinda tired of medieval/ fantasy setting..for now that is.

Multiplayer RPGs / Re: Diablo 3?
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:05:52 AM »
As far as I understand it you don't completely lose control over your characters development.. there is still the rune system and you still have the choice between different skill sets. ( feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here).

The fact that rare items can be bought with real cash... doesn't really matter in my opinion.. why bother playing diablo at all if you aren't willing to hunt for your own items as soon as an opportunity to buy them pops out? I'm pretty sure that the story of d3 could be easily summarized in less than one page... its a loot driven hack n' slash game ... if you like that kind of games ... than i don't know why you should be bothered by a feature that you are not even required to use.

I liked it quite a bit...

well I it wouldn't be bad if you invited a couple of people over.. and everybody has to pick an older game.. and it will be kinda like the "what have you been playing" section just about an older game and maybe plus a short news section.. i don't know .. just thinking out loud .

"This just in.. Blizzard has now officially legalized farming and gold selling so that you folks out there can make a living out of your favorite game. Back to you Ted...."

Just kidding.... I mean i myself don't see many problems with the auction house...

1. you don't have to use this feature

2. I like hunting for my own items anyway.. i mean diablo has always been a loot-driven game... if you want to play diablo for a exciting story or incredible character development (storywise not statwise :p) ....than be my guest ..but don't complain afterwards.

the only problem that i see with this is that some people out there will get hooked on this ... basically forcing themselves to hunt for rare items just to sell them ..... than again bad publicity is still publicity for blizzard anyway... and I'am also sure that blizz will have to lock this feature for some countrys.

As for the required connection.... no real surprise there.... if there wouldn't be as many pirates out there ...blizz could avoid it... but thinking back about diablo 2... there has been  an insane amount of illegal copies on the market.

Ahh phantasy star ....
a very nostalgic podcast.... for me at least

sadly my first phantasy star was 4...and now i really can't go back to play 2 or 3.....4 is simply that much better...

on a sidenote Steven scare me... :p (naah not really.... when  i think about your phantasy star "expertise" it reminds me of myself and the first two shining force games on sega)

ps: thank you very much for the podcasts... overall keep up the good work... should you run out of recent news to talk about once again... you can always talk about 90s rpgs ... maybe something not as famous as final fantasy or chrono trigger ... simply great rpgs from "back then".

the best rpg ever eh?

correct me if I'm wrong....but there have been more than 700 rpgs out there.... well and even if we stay with the number 700 as the basis....we would still need somebody who has actually experienced all those rpgs....

ps: i don't see the rpg genre dying anytime soon.... thus it is also too early to determine anything as "best ever"...
