Sakuraba is not really a bad composer, is just that he never takes vacations. I still remember when all of those JRPGs for the 360 were being released, allmost all of them have the involvement of him in the music.

The only memorable being the one from Infinite Undiscovery.

Recently though, he did a good track for the "Dariusburst Remix Wonder World", the track is called "The Battle is Now in Progress".

Ooo I got that one on my iPod.

Can't say a little break helped the revered Uematsu.

I don't know... I hate the arguments of "it sounds too much like everything else they composed" bit when that argument can pretty much apply to any game composer with their personal styling.  Worst recent offender has to be Sakimoto = War.
People did actually seem happy to know Sakuraba was composing for Eternal Sonata, his work goes well with a kind of "classical" method of VG music.

One thing me, and a lot of the Tales community would kill to see is the return of Go Shiina (a la Legendia)

I like several of Sakuraba's older works, mainly Valkyrie Profile, and Baten Kaitos, but after Eternal Sonata, even the same ol got to me. Yes, it can apply to any composers, but his feel much more samey than the others who either differentiate things a little (like Meguro) or always make it interesting (the Ys composers, JDK Band). To each their own.

....goddamit, why do I find everything in the SMT series, even Meguro pretty average (besides the art work)?!?!?  A few of Meguro's tracks are without a doubt amazing, but a lot of the bragged-about tracks do nothing for me haha (Particularly a number of battle themes...that, and P3 had the most depressing "victory" theme ever.)

Sakuraba can compose well at times - Fighting of the Spirit is one of my favorite game tracks, the pprblem is it was done 15 YEARS AGO and there hasn't been a Tales track that has compared since. He seriously needs a break from Tales.

Nice review though I liked Tales of Graces' piano theme.

BTW, for those who've played Vesperia and Graces, how do they compare?

If nothing else, Meguro sure mixes it up. Listen to the dark metal of Nocturne, the jazz of Raidou, then the symphonic works of Strange Journey.

...and then the J-pop of P3 & P4. It all has downs, but the ups are solid.

No I know.  Unlike a few people here, I'm not big on the metal though (sorry).  I'm curious about the Raidou tracks if you see it's kinda jazzy.  Strange Journey's tracks creeped me out (though, the tracks I did hear were near the end where you see Zelenin "acting up".... brrr).

New character was revealed for Xillia... yay, we got a loli character....

Personally, I love Meguro for how he can change it up depending on the SMT game's setting. I know P3 and 4 get a lot of hate and they sure aren't my FAVOURITE, but the music fits.

Nocturne is my favourite. Just like the game itself. :)

Even if you don't like the rap and the pop in P3&4 they still have some of his best pieces. The almighty, Battle for everyone's soul, Myst, Unavoidabble battle, just to name a few.

His dungeon themes are some of his worsts, ironically speaking you spend a ton of time in them.  I think that's my one major gripe.

P3's main dungeon theme sure got annoying fast. But they kinda fixed that with FES allowing you to choose different BGM. P4 had better dungeon themes with added variety. All in all, Meguro gradually became one of my favourite video game composers in the past decade.

Anyways, what the hell is up with these character designs?!

Yeah, I love Meguro's tracks in all the games I've played, which so far have just been Nocturne, Strange Journey, and Persona 3...well, okay I didn't love P3's music, but it blended well with the rest of the game.

As for the character designs...yeah, not liking those either. Not a deal breaker but it's still a bit worrysome I suppose.

Meguro has a great track record for gaming soundtracks. Most Japanese composers have slowly fallen apart in the last 5 years in terms of quality
