Title: Kim Jong-il dead

Worthy of its own thread by far. (http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/18/world/asia/north-korea-leader-dead/index.html?hpt=hp_t1)

The internet is going crazy right now. I just heard from a Korean friend of mine. Wonder what's going to become of N.Korea now?
The S.Korean military declared an emergency alert.

Hasn't his health or aliveness been debated on the internet based on how little he shows up?

Still...wow, this is gonna have some serious repercussions.

Yeah...while this news is big, I don't know if any drastic change will come. There's been talk for some time now about who would succeed him after his death as his health has been failing him for some time. We'll have to just wait and see what happens. Considering the state of the country it could be some time before any real news.

His son's gonna succeed him, I thought.

Either way, I find it hard to sympathize with megalomaniacal dictators, and so I will have to refrain from pretending to show any remorse for this foolish madman's death..

Pretty much North Korea and Somalia are tied for being the worse countries in the world.  NK for being an oppressive dictatorship were even if you're somewhat related to someone who is questioning the government you were taken to a reeducation camp, and there was mass fmaine which Kimmy refused to open the borders.  Somalia on the other hand has had no government since 2004 I think.  Total opposites but both are hell.

Regardless of what anyone says, being "happy" that Kim Jong-il is dead is silly as hell. I'd also agree with Thoren. Bad as things are in NK, the US's history of foreign relations, and even things in this country are just as bad, and perhaps in many ways worse, than the NK regime. That isn't to make light of what is happening in NK, but I think so many people approach the NK/SK issue with the wrong mentality.

I'm no fan with the direction the U.S. government has gone the last few years but I'd take it over NK any day of the year.

What mentality is wrong? I don't think it's wrong to want NK to consider its citizens more, right now it's all about the regime and those in power.

It may not actually all be staged. I'm sure it's encouraged, but there is a strong belief amongst many DPRK residents that Kim is some kind of benevolent leader. It's screwed up, but hey, you'd probably believe it somewhat too if it's all you were ever taught.

Very much this. For example, I don't think there's a single American(Western?)-born and raised citizen, for instance, that doesn't consider Mao ZeDong a villain, outside of maybe some very history-literate people, and even then. Yet among Chinese and even amongst some Taiwanese he is very often seen as a mixed-bag figure or even a heroic one. We're pretty quick to label this as some sort of cultural brainwashing without taking into consideration that we are capable of being subject to the very same thing.

thoren's statement is still a bunch of doodoo though

Regardless of what anyone says, being "happy" that Kim Jong-il is dead is silly as hell.

What's silly as hell is that you have access to the internet, video games to play, food to eat, and thus have a much more privileged life than most of the world, thus allowing you the elbow room for your self-righteousness.  I know cartoons and JRPGs have taught you that death is terrible and stuff, but when victims have had their entire extended family put into concentration camps and/or executed for the slightest infraction and a few have beaten the odds and escaped from that shithole of a country where stealing food isn't even an option because there's barely any food to steal as just another result of Kim Jong Il's failed leadership, to say that being happy he is dead is silly as hell is utterly ridiculous.

How bad the USA has been in the past or is currently in the present has no bearing on the matter.  His successor could be just as bad and nothing may change there, but the world has one less toolbag and there's plenty of reasons some may be happy about it.

Well it's not all staged but i'd say the majority of people are happier then what they're showing. Who's to know without experiencing the lifestyle? I wonder how many know of a defector, and then how many see them as a traitor. Interesting time's and possibly dangerous times, Whatever happens it's still a country of hostages at this point.

Oh shit, that's right, I totally forgot that since Jong-il's death the borders have opened up, all the people are being reeducated that the US isn't quite the monster it's thought to be, and the whole peninsula is reunited. Oh fuck...no. Nothing's changed. At all, except that one man, part of an entire machine that kept the country in that state, has died. Yeah, and those other people they are totally just going to sit back and let Jong-eun do what he wants.

But that's okay, one is gone. I mean it's so obvious that we all care so much about what is happening in that country, and we clearly all know what we're talking about. Oh, thank you for mentioning the few fortunate people to have escaped and make it out and tell their story, I totally forgot about them, and knowing that obviously makes the whole thing much better. Let me now put a smile on my face for them now that Jong-il is dead, because they still don't have to live with the fear of being caught and sent back to North Korea and face charges of treason.

I also didn't realize my remark had anything to do with death being bad, and lord knows where that comment about cartoons and JRPGs came from, but again, whatever. I'm sure you, being the king of trolls that you are, will come back with some new witty remark to "put me in my place" about how I'm so privileged and blah blah blah, because you know, I'm totally unaware of my status in this world and totally need someone else over the internet to put me in my place. Thanks for that by the way. I also know however, that pretending to be happy for the death of some guy, terrible as he may have been, isn't doing shit for anyone in North Korea, nor myself.

Anyway, don't let me spoil the fun. I can see the door. I hate to sour the party.

It may be true that Kim Jong-Il's death will change nothing, but each day he was alive, suffering and horror existed in his country. Now that he's (hopefully) burning in hell for the destruction of the free will of millions, there is some potential for change - little, maybe even miniscule, but the potential is there all the same.

If you think that people shouldn't be happy that a power mad despot is gone from the world, well... sometimes the world really is better off without some people - some DO deserve death. I wouldn't call you self-righteous, but definitely overly idealistic.

You managed to completely miss the point of my post.  I'm not asking you to be happy that he's dead.  I'm not happy about it either because deep down, I honestly don't give a shit.  His life and death had a negligible impact on my life.  But there are people whose lives were affected in some manner, big or small, and you're a shithead for condemning them over being glad that he's dead.

I can think of one reason to not be happy and that's that the country has become less stable. We have no idea what kind of plans his successor has. It's not unthinkable he'll act as an agressor in an attempt to prove his worth as the new leader. That why South Korea is so nervous right now. Things may have been terrible to begin with, but they could get even worse.

I'd rather be an optimist though. If this new guy starts to slowly open up the country, that would be a reason to be happy, wouldn't it?

Pull out a checkbook and wait until after everything has been rung up before you start filling it out.  That's a great way to troll the shit out of me.  Well, me and everyone else in the line.  Bonus points for screwing it up and having to write another check.  If you see some people move to another line, you won real life.

The issue I have with random internet fuckwads (see: us) being glad that someone is dead is that he, as Parn pointed out, doesn't impact our lives in any meaningful way. It's morbid to say you're glad about this, because chances are you know he's a big bad dictator man and that's it. Oh, and he's dead.

Now, the people who actually had to live through that regime? Let them tubgirl all over his fucking grave.

I'd rather be an optimist though. If this new guy starts to slowly open up the country, that would be a reason to be happy, wouldn't it?

Why, the glorious leaders have already done quite a bit to open up the country for capitalist exploitation. "Foreign investment" is already there, and tens of thousands of North Korean workers are sent every year as cheap labor to China and the Far East of Russia to work their asses off for food. The NK leadership isn`t really opposed to the idea of a full transition to a peripheral capitalist economy which NK already partially is anyway. The main concern of the local bureaucracy is how to hold to their positions of power during the said transition. Their Chinese comrades have done quite well in this regard and now we a have a "socialist" state with billionaires, sweatshops and widespread child labor.
