Title: Non-RPG Playstation One Games
Post by: Bytor on February 08, 2012, 07:30:13 PM
I pretty much missed out on games in the PSX era and seeing the post about Colony Wars got me to thinking. It's easy to read the reviews here concerning RPG's and I have purchased (and played) many but I was wondering what non-RPG's you guys (RPG'ers) think are good games and worth checking out. And for the record I don't speak or read Japanese so I'm mainly interested in NA releases.

Hey Bytor, heres a few I enjoyed at the time:

THPS2 - Not the best version of the game but it does run really well on the old ps1. Lots of realistic and un-realistic skateboard moves

Silent Bomber - Old school shooter in a 3d environment, as the title says it's based off blowing things up

Shadowman - Under the skin, this game is pure evil. The serial killers and music freaked me out, Out of my 3 suggestions i'd easily recommend this one over the others. There's soilers here but check the plot out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Man_%28video_game%29

Klonoa ang MGS are favorites, and the Legacy of Kain games are highly regarded, though I guess 1 goes into RPG proper whereas the sequel doesn't. I'll throw more in when they come to mind, the problem is a lot of them either aged poorly, or are made irrelevant but newer, more modern entries that play roughly the same yet look much better and have online play and assorted issues ironed out (like the Wipeout series).

Love Shadowman but I can only play the Dreamcast version. The PS1 version is atrocious.

For me, there were great racers like Wipeout XL, Ridge Racer 4 and Need For Speed High Stakes and even Driver
Weird quirky games like Incredible Crisis and Looney Tunes Sheep Raider
Fun shooters like Medal of Honour/MOH Underground and Syphon Filter
Point and click games like Blazing Dragons, Discworld and Psychic Detectives
Horror games like Silent Hill, RE 1-3 and Vampire Hunter D
Shooters like Future Cop LAPD and Ghost in the Shell plus shmups like Einhander and even decent versions of Descent/Forsaken
3rd person action/stealth like MGS, Tenchu, Dino Crisis and Fear Effect

The PS1 had all the bases covered.

Colony Wars

GPolice is a favorite of mine

Jumping Flash

Castlevania: SoTN

Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver (I freaking LOVE the story in soul reaver tho the game will probably feel dated.)

Mega Man Legends is fun as hell

MML is good, though I don't think it's aged too well. Out of the side-scrolling MM games X4 is probably the best on the system. X5 and 8 are okay. X6 is garbage.

Tomba
Metal Slug
Ape Escape
Einhander
Crash Bandicoot
Klonoa
MGS
Legacy of Kain
SOTN
Gunner's Heaven

The Deception series is probably the best thing on the PS1, outside all the RPGs.

(c/o yours truly :P)

Those and the Fear Effect games, especially FE1.

I love the two Oddworld games on the Playstation (Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus), and being 2D they've aged much better than their contemporaries. Even the FMVs hold up better than most other games from the time.

The Deception series is probably the best thing on the PS1, outside all the RPGs.

The original Tecmo's Deception was the first game I owned for the PSone (Toshinden aside) and I still love it.  The first one's a wee bit simplistic at this point, but Kagero is still fun.

Demolition Derby

Wild 9 has NOT aged well.

Philosoma was a good show

The PC, DC and n64 versions are better though he has the PSX, it plays fine except for the grainy graphics and a bug or 2.

I agree with deception series, it's like human lemmings but funnier. For those who have a PS3 the Japanese PSN has deception 3 on PsOne classics.

Also, I recomend Sould Blade as an excellent Fighter and Ridge racer 4 as the best in the series imho. Any of the bomberman games are brilliant for multiplayer mayhem

Deception 3's my favorite in the series, but Kagero is a close second. 'Trapt'(blech) is #3. Great looking, though.

Einhander is an awesome rail shooter to try out. I recently ran through that a few times. Give that a whirl for a non rpg title. Other good non rpg games i could recommend are castlevania sotn though yeah it has a bunch of rpg elements, mega man legends 1 and 2, Silent Hill (still pretty scary for its age), tomba, tekken 3 which is AWESOME, and off the top of my head still probably resident evil 2 because 1 just doesn't feel all that scary.

Honestly, I preferred rpgs on psx to most other games. Most of the action and adventure titles on psx haven't aged well, so going back to those is kind of painful on the senses. At least ps2 stuff still holds it own more or less.

Wild 9 has NOT aged well.

I never thought Wild 9 was particularly good to begin with.  It was really gimmicky and was the first title during Shiny's funk period (Wild 9, Messiah, etc.)

This person speaks truth.  Be prepared for an assload of Engrish, though.

I've got a soft spot for the first Dino Crisis and the first Syphon Filter, but I have a feeling neither one of them has aged well.  I should pull them out and see. :P

Judging by my quick try of Syphon Filter through a PSN+ trial... Nope! But then I wanted proper dual analog and I couldn't do that even in the third game.

My favorite PS1 games that aren't RPGs are Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Mega Man X4, and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.  Lots of quality games on the system.  FF VII and MMX4 were the two biggest reasons I got a PS1 instead of an N64 way back in the day (circa early 1998).

Oh hey I started a thing.

Anyway not counting the stuff I bought over the past two weeks and might continue buying because I have nothing else to do...

Jumping Flash. I fucking love these games. They're like, FPS/Platformer hybrids, but it actually works because of how the view angle works or whatever. Really creative levels. Lots of stuff to find. Very charm.

Spyro 1/2. I got really into 3D platformers a few years back and ended up picking these up. Way after I was young enough to be in the target audience. They're pretty great, and like, in terms of visuals and controls really hold up well. Maybe a little easy, but these aren't the kind of games that would work with extreme difficultly.

Megaman Legends - Noting these; not going into detail because technically they're pretty much RPGs.

Aquanaut's Holiday - I am probably the only person that likes this, but it's really creepy and inspiring and huge. AH2 was disappointing because you have seven fairly small seas and a discovery counter instead of one, huge world.

Soul Blade - I actually like this more than Soul Calibur 2. Despite being more refined, Conquest mode was basically a grindfest, whereas SB's single player had like, unique challenge maps and stuff.

Tomba - I can't say I ever really got THAT far in this, but I really adored what I did play of it.

R-Types - Okay, they're ports, but they were pretty much the best R-Type ports at the time.

Also I started playing Syphon Filter, having gotten it recently. Low resolution and the Mara Aramov chase aside, it seems like it plays pretty well still. Kind of easy and there are some aspects of the controls I find weird tho.

I'm finding Tenchu a lot clunkier, although that might just be me sucking at it.

Anyway this is the part where I trawl for recommendations:

- Got Fear Effect last weekend. Played some of it and seems up my alley. Saw FE2 and was thinking about grabbing it since it's cheap. cj_iwakura seems to indicate that FE1 was better though.

- Soul Reaver looks pretty interesting as well but it seems like the PC and DC versions were... better. Also I never got into LoK1 because of the wonky field of view. Is that something I really should play first?

- How was Medievil?

I really think we should stop calling symphony of the night a not-rpg. It has more rpg elements than some of the rpgs I've played in the last 5 years. All in favor...uh yeah just call it an rpg if you're in favor.

SotN is probably best described as a sidescrolling dungeon crawl. I don't like the term Metroidvania -- partially because Castelvania didn't gain the Metroidian elements until SotN (C2 doesn't count for various reasons), partially because the Metroid-style Castlevanias are outright RPGs, and those mechanics really alter how the game actually plays out.

I remember Medievil being really clunky, even back in the day, but my memory is pretty fuzzy on that game.

If you want a fun cart game that doesn't include Mario, Crash Team Racing is actually really solid.

Medievil IS really clunky, particularly on the ps3's PsOne classics.  Getting a bit out of control here Bytor, but there's been some excellent suggestions. I'll add a couple more, Someone mentioned Spyro? I really enjoyed this one regardless of the cuteness. I actually recieved all of the spyro's recently but unfortunately they are all disc only.

Anyway, I suggest "Driver 2", there's a good game to be had in an attempt to make a PS1 sandbox game.

I'm going to second Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen and Soul Reaver. To this day I'm always bitching that a new entry into the series is long overdue.  Twisted Metal 2 is always a good time and if you like racing, R4, Sled Storm and Crash Team Racing are some of my favorites.

Fear Effect 2 is a prequel, so you can play it first, but you'll appreciate some elements more if you played FE1 before it.

Inferno was the biggest loss ever. It looked like it was going to be more twisted than 1 & 2 combined, and that's saying something. (It got cancelled before it came out, supposed to have been a PS2 game.)

Blagh yeah I hope I can pick up a copy sometime.

Anyone ever play a game called Treasures of the Deep? That thing freaked me out bad. I also have copies of Adventures of Lomax, Kingsley's Adventure, and Swagman I keep meaning to play.

Oh, are we considering Monster Rancher 2 to be an RPG? I adore that game, but it's kind of on the line between RPG and... virtual pet so not sure how to class it.

MDK, btw, was the first videogame I bought after going away to college :}

I have a big ol' nostalgia engorged heart for Crash. Those games were a lot of fun, but I haven't touched them since I was 10, so I have no idea how they are now.

I also recommend Medieval, despite being clunky. I loved the cartoonish dark fantasy world. The sequel is pretty good too.

Clock Tower. The first one for the PSX. This game is pretty old, and the controls are awful (point and click using the PSX controller), but it is a genuinely creepy game. Similar to Amnesia, it's a survival horror game, except you don't actually fight the killer, you have to run and hide and hope it doesn't find you. The thing that makes this one the best is that the killer's music doesn't play until after he just kicked the door open, scaring you shitless. The one for the PS2 had the music precede the killer, which ruined the suspense.

Anyone else remember Gex? All I remember was the platforming made me feel stupid, and I thought the games were funny.

I'm trying to remember an old ass ps1 game that was set in a Victorian London that had a very dark and gritty sort of jack the ripper thing going on. It was a 3rd person almost over the shoulder action title and I think you played some awesome sort of priest. Your weapon was a two handed staff or scepter and I think you had a firearm as well.

that was a fun game, and I played it years later and thought it held up as long as you have a stomach for early 3d.

I think you fought some sort of weird creatures / demons.

Nightmare Creatures got sort of mixed reviews when it was new even, iirc, and was always kind of divisive.

I also can't find my copy of Jumping Flash 1 which is pissing me off a bit.

Anyway seeing as how the shitty goddamn business trip ended, Imma hit up the used game stores in Columbus and see what they got. And hope my hotel fee reimbursement check comes through soon.
