Title: RPGFan Twitch Channel
Post by: Rapturous on February 24, 2014, 09:05:17 PM
Hello, Fans!  As many of you have probably noticed, RPGFan is launching a Twitch stream channel found here:  http://www.twitch.tv/rpgfancom

We're still working the kinks out and getting acclimated to the accompanying software, so thank you for your patience.  As always, we're interested in your feedback on the channel.  We also would like to know what games you're interested in us streaming.  We'll have a more official post on the front page about this later, but for the time being, feel free to follow us, tell your friends, and enjoy the stream!

So what is this whole twitch thing? You watch other people play video games? That has the potential to be either colossally boring, or...I don't know what. I suppose depending upon the game it could be entertaining. Or if you can get a whole bunch of people streaming together. Still not something I would do. Time is already at a premium.

Okay this sounds like a better idea already.

Twitch is great under two conditions:

1. The person streaming is mildly entertaining.
2. It's a game without a plot.

So many people livestream plot-heavy games on Twitch the day it comes out as a sort of alternative to reviews, and I just don't get it. Why would you want to watch the entire beginning of a plot-heavy game you're considering getting.

Now you get it, and the beginning is that much more boring, and it could put a sour note on the rest of the game. That's the way I see it, anyway.

If the chat is active, it's more of like having a good discussion with something on in the background.

It's best used for games that aren't released yet (Japanese player "Leta" is big because he plays and beats a lot of Japanese games through the course of several very long sessions, so it's like an extended gameplay preview).

Or for challenges.  The Twitch Plays Pokemon is huuuuge right now, but I watched one of 4 players "racing" to beat Ocarina of Time which was kinda cool (as a background distraction).

That said, I prefer Youtube now for the LoL tournaments.
I find that Twitch has lag issues on huge events.
Youtube on the other hand runs like butter.

We're trying to get podcast people streaming. I myself have streamed FFXIV endgame content and the PS4 beta, and we want to get Rob to do Dark Souls II (mostly so I can harass him every time he dies, but I digress).

I find it's an interesting way to interact with people and have enjoyable discussions, especially if the game in question is something people have specific queries about. There are about 120 people watching the FFXIV beta stream I ran, and I got to answer a lot of questions and show off a little of the PS4 version's features.

I really enjoyed the stream the other night (logged in as Rhythmroo)! I was hoping there was going to be more folks in the chat, but perhaps next time there will be a a site announcement the next time you do it (You did an unboxing announcement for Tales but not a twitch one for the game you unbox? for shame!). Don't forget you also have a newsbox on the forum. :)

I did that just for the hell of it.  I've got a pretty crappy schedule (I travel for work constantly), so any time I do a stream, it's going to be fairly random when I can stream.  Most of it is going to be scheduled ala FFXIV.

I do a bit of streaming every once in a while. Trying to talk over a game and concentrating on what you're doing while avoiding spacing out or stuttering can be kind of tricky. Being mildly entertaining while you're at it is even trickier :) In my case its supposed to be a variety gaming stream, but I usually end up doing Natural Selection 2 (FPS/RTS hybrid) most of the time, that isn't doing me any favors as far as concentrating goes. Yet to do an RPG, might drop by the RPG fan stream some time to pick up a pointer or two about how its done.

Make sure to tune in to Caitlin and Tooker's magical romp through Witcher III Land.
Independent study shows that 4 out of 5 badgers who watched our stream went on to become popular sports mascots*. Don't let that kind of success pass you by, tune in today at 9:00am PST/12:00pm EST. That's 6pm CET for those in jolly old Europe!

*Not applicable to wombats and beavers.  Study conducted by me with no involvement of actual badgers, statistic based entirely on a guess and may be 100% inaccurate.

I'm looking forward to giving this a try this evening. I'm not really that good at deck building TCGs but hopefully some free stuff will provide a good incentive to stick with it long enough to get a good feel for it, so thanks!

I would say open the packs and build a deck as soon as you get out of the tutorial. I managed to finish the PVE campaign so far and some of the later dungeons are quite hard. Also to prevent you from just using a completely optimal deck from the beginning of the campaign, they limit how many copies of each card you can have in your deck and slowly as you level the restrictions lift.
Title: Re: RPGFan's Twitch Channel
Post by: Tooker on January 31, 2016, 04:02:56 PM
Now that I've gone through a few battles, I think I'll dive into my cards as well and see which cards I need to add in.

Probably some more resources, I'm thinking. ;)

Oh, that reminds me, I mentioned mercenaries - I was told that when they are usable, you'll be able to set a completely different deck for each mercenary so that when you bring them in to replace your champion in a battle, they have a deck that plays to the mercenary's strength rather than the main character's.

I still think you should've done the Brave Labyrinth.  It would've made the latter dungeons go quicker.  Seriously.  Especially when you consider how powerful Jean's Blue Dragon techniques are.  With her strength boosted, she can take out entire armies.

I am definitely looking forward to the Breath of Fire 4 stream.  I passed on most of the Grandia II stream since I am actively playing through the game and it's my first play through.

I am currently playing Wild Arms 2 myself.  I have to say that the 3D battle graphics look positively primitive.  A part of me can't help but consider the visuals the 3D equivalent of the Atari 2600 hundred era's 2D graphics.  They look that bad.  Well, maybe closer to the 8 Bit era, than the Atari era.

As much as I hate to say it, compared to today's game's Wild Arms 2's battle screen graphics look like unwashed anus.  The town and and dungeon maps aren't as bad, though.  I think part of it is because it's mostly from an overhead perspective while the developers were going for something more cinematic for their battle engine.

Lunar 2 is now finished and you can catch the whole thing on youtube.  Thanks for watching!

Not sure what to stream next.  It's either going to be BoF4, WA2, Star Ocean 2 or Trails in the Sky(which I have never played).

Yeah I should have but it worked out in the end. :)  And yeah I commented on it in the WA2 stream and I agree they look terrible but it was a step up from the previous game at least.  Still a fun game overall though.

Personally, considering the primitive nature of 3D graphics at the time, the game would've been better served if they took the approach that Suikoden did for the battle screens.  Use 3D battle fields with 2D sprites.

Skies of Arcadia Legends this Sunday despite what the front page says(should be updated shortly). We had a scheduling problem so Caitlin had to bump back Tales of the Borderlands 3 to the Sunday afterward.

That's right you heard me Skies of Arcadia Legends.  To be honest I haven't played much of it so this despite owning the GameCube version since release so this will be a fresh experience for me.

Why do you guys not have a Friday or Saturday night stream?  Just curious.

Got a suggestion for a livestream. Me and my friends have been playing through the board game/mystery/storytelling game Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective recently. Finished the game and discovered that there are actually people who made fan cases online. Found and did a playthrough of the case The Ogilvie Curse found at http://mistery.io . I think it worked out pretty well and more people should try it. Warning though, there's a lotta reading so should probably have at least 4 players or more.

Just availability.  I would love to stream more but the only day I can really stream right now is Monday and Sunday.  Work and life take up a lot of time plus we still have obligations to the site(doing news takes a lot of time). :(  I know Maxx will be switching his day around since Wednesday doesn't work out for him anymore he might choose Friday or Saturday don't know yet.  We are looking into more days though when we have the time plus we have a lot coming down the pipeline for the twitch channel in the future.

So it's like a D&D mystery case kinda deal?  That actually sounds kinda fun but your right we would have to get people together to do it.  Def something that would be a lot of fun.  Thanks for suggesting!

It's more like a choose your own adventure deduction game kinda. You choose as a group which leads to follow and each move costs points at the end. When you feel you are ready, click the Solve The Mystery button and input your solution to the mystery and some other details. It really helps to have wordpad or a sheet of paper ready as writing down clues helps immensely. Me and my friends did a run over skype and streamed it.

This reminds me that I had wanted to pick up a few copies of Sword Coast Legends for the team to stream and review it, because our preview at last year's E3 really piqued my interest.

http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2015/3374.html

I hear that when it first came out, it had issues, but that it's improved since then.  I'm checking with the team to see if anyone else can play it with me.  If so, I think that could provide some pretty cool D&D action for us our Twitch channel.

At the moment it looks like KotOR will be streamed on Tuesdays at a very European time. It's not set in stone yet, but the official announcement of the new time slot should be coming soon.

Well be streaming Chrono Cross tomorrow in honor of its release 16 years ago a few years ago.  We will also be streaming the rest of it the week of the 29th as an end of summer stream.  Gonna let chat make decisions and name characters.  Should be a lot of fun so stop on by if you have the time.

Life was not kind to Scott yesterday, and he was unable to make it as a result.  Then we had a miscommunication on making a post about that fact, so that didn't happen...

Our sincere apologies if you sat there waiting for a long time. I know you in particular are a faithful viewer, and we don't want to waste people's time.

I just want to say I really enjoyed Scott's stream of Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel.  The game looked like a blast to play.  Because of your stream, XSeed made some extra money since I ordered the game and its sequel from their site.

Considering how there hasn't been a Wednesday stream in weeks, I really think it might be time to remove it from the schedule.  For the last few weeks I've been tuning in to your channel on Wednesday nights only to find that there's no stream.  It's both disappointing and frustrating.

It is currently 8:40 PM EDT and there is no stream.  Please remove the Wednesday stream from your schedule.  I keep turning to your Twitch channel on Wednesdays to be disappointed by a lack of stream.  This has been going on for well over a month now.

Sorry about that.  We were in the middle of figuring out a few time schedule changes and have updated the stream times and days to reflect that now.  Caitlin's stream of FF12: The Zodiac Age will be moving to Monday after it's initial broadcast of tonight and I will be streaming a few days per week hopefully starting next week. I hope you continue to enjoy the streams.

So We just finished Danganronpa 1 through V3 on stream and I am at crossroads on what to play next on stream.  So I made a straw poll of the 3 most popular games so far and will let everyone decide what we should play next. If the top 2 are close maybe we will split days between them.  The vote ends after the end of Sunday's FF14 4.1 stream

So I was watching today's Phantasy Star II stream that sparked a realization that nearly broke my heart.  The game is unplayable by modern standards, which just hurts to admit.  I've attempted to play and beat this game as a child and multiple times as an adult and never succeeded.

What I found so bothersome is that the very way the game is built is now intolerable to me.  The limited inventory, random battles and even random enemies the party members attack would infuriate me.  Moreover, Maxx spent three hours grinding just to be able to become strong enough to complete one of the beginning dungeons.

Such a punishing experience is simply something I'm not willing to put up with anymore.  Having my nostalgia tinted glasses so violently ripped away was jarring.  On the plus side, it won't stop me from watching Maxx muddle through the game, though.
