Title: What's your Favourite Garbage Food?
Post by: Dice on November 02, 2016, 09:06:43 PM
We all eat garbage food.  But what's the best one?

These babies.
Mozzarela sticks.  Fried breaded cheese with toe-mah-toe sauce?
Yes.

I don't think I go a day without thinking about nachos.

Also, next time you have mozz sticks, try them with greek dressing instead of tomato sauce, it's so good!

No food is garbage food unless you eat it from the garbage...that being said...

7-11 Chili and cheese Big Bite hot dog. I actually prefer the cheeseburger one, but will take any variation. Also it has to look exactly like that or you did it wrong.

^Ah, reminds me of senior year in high school. We'd go out to 7-11 most of the time (when we weren't doing shots of Aftershock/Avalanche at this one guy's house), and I'd load up on them chili cheese dogs every time.

As for me, my absolute favorite garbage food is oh-so-conventional pizza. I will eat a well-made pizza any freakin' day of the week. There's one shop near my house that makes fantastic pies. It's owned and run by an actual Italian immigrant (meaning, he knows what he is doing), and he has a permanent coupon for a 14" 1 topping thin crust for $11. He also makes amazing deep fried calzones.

I'd be the guy using a fork and knife to eat this.

Follow up poll:

For nachos, chili dogs, cheese fries, etc:

Cheese sauce or shredded cheese?

I think shredded cheese is always better, particularly for chili cheese fries.

I liked Turkey Twizzlers as a kid but then that thundercunt Jamie Oliver got them banned. THEY NEVER EVEN SERVED THEM AT MY SCHOOL JAMIE WHY CANT I EAT THEM AT HOME?!

*cough*

Anyway, I'm quite partial (i spelled this "parshell" the first time around, wtf, late-onset dyslexia?) to deep fried haggis, which is like the most Scottish thing I can think of.

I think my garbage/junk food tastes have matured.

Like instead of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, I crave the scratch-made ones from the local chocolatier near where I live.  I really should go there to get a bag of chocolate covered pretzels.  I LOVE chocolate covered pretzels.

My cycling club's weekly ride meet-up spot is at an upscale grocery store and I love getting treats from their dessert counter.  Their Wonka Pyramid is so decadent.  It's a chocolate dessert.

Yeah, good chocolate, especially the dark 70-90% cacao stuff, is my indulgence.

I try to stay away from fried foods, but I do love me some zucchini sticks and fried mushrooms, especially from a good New Jersey diner.  Oh, and whenever I'm feeling "dinner indulgent" I go for a big ol' platter of tempura vegetables from this Japanese restaurant near where I work.

Anything that features warm/cooked cheese is indulgent for me too.  Paneer, halloumi... yum!  And if you like fried cheese, you have to go to a Greek restaurant and try saganaki.

Good chocolate is the best. Especially good chocolate with creative flavours. I used to think Japan was silly for having tons of limited editions of popular brands, but now I'm like, OMG!, I haven't tried this new Tony Chocolonely bar yet.

Ginger and lemon. I wonder what that will be like.

Sadly, they were out of the white bar with carrot and walnut. That one sounded interesting.

Yeah, the name is kind of weird, but there's a story behind it that starts with this protocol a bunch of big chocolate companies signed to comply with. The aim was to combat modern slavery and child labour. A reporter, Teun van der Keuken, investigated it and found out all those companies where doing a terrible job actually following the rules they agreed with. So, he recorded himself eating like a dozen of chocolate bars from these companies, and tried to turn himself in at the police station for having knowingly and willingly purchased and consumed an illegal product. He even convinced four child slaves to testify against him in court. The case was dismissed, because, yeah, technically whole thing was sort of insane. Big chocolate, however, wasn't impressed and Van der Keuken decided to start his own brand using actual fair trade cacao that can be traced back to cacao producers that pay fair workers a fair wage and don't employ young children.

Tony's Chocolonely is available in (part of) the US now, but that branch only sells the normal flavours. No crazy limited editions (yet).

tl;dr by eating this chocolate, you're contributing to someone's lone battle against modern slavery.

BTW dark chocolate + lemon + ginger = delicious

My favorite garbage food are sandwiches.  Not regular homemade sandwiches, but restaurant sandwiches overstuffed with meat and cheese.  Phillies, Reubens, Caesars, you name it.  Bread, meat, and cheese messy monsters.

Other guilty pleasure food I just thought of.

I steer clear of doughnuts, but whenever I ride with my cycling club during the summer and our mid-ride stop is a farm, I enjoy me a seasonal apple cider doughnut or two.  Apple cider doughnuts are a south Jersey thing in the summer.  There is this one farm that also has these amazing seasonal cranberry muffins, made with local cranberries.  I know a muffin is pretty much a cupcake without frosting, but man is it good.

Several of our rides often stop at local bakeries mid-ride and I sometimes indulge in a chocolate croissant or some other good pastry.

Although not a "junk/garbage" food, peanut butter is my favorite food, hands down.  And, obviously, it has to be a premium kind and creamy.  I dislike chunky peanut butter.

Pancakes are another one where it's not a "garbage food," but when presented with a stack of pancakes, I always eat a few too many.

I think my current favorite garbage food is breakfast burritos.  Like the ones from McDonalds.

Ooh, I forgot a good one!  Jalepeno poppers.  Whether with cheddar or cream cheese, they are so good.  And if you make baked mac 'n cheese, slice up some jalepenos in it.  That plus the crunchy topping equals "popper mac" which is two comfort food classics making delicious gooey spicy love.

EDIT: I said a lot in this thread, but scratch it.  All of it.  In keeping with the precedence Dice has set with this thread, my choice for "garbage food" is the jalepeno popper.

EDIT 2: I love pizza as well.  It's one of my favorite foods and I like making it at home.  I might have to look into making a jalepeno popper pizza.

But my official vote is still for the jalepeno popper.

Depends on the quantities you eat them in. A piece of candy is just a piece of candy, but I've seen people eat absurd amounts of chocolate for 'lunch'. Sure, I shouldn't judge, two handfuls of dried dates and a cupcake aren't exactly lunch either, but still... atleast I had a decent breakfast!

I have to say my favorite breakfasts were the ones I had in France where it was just croissants dipped in chocolate, wowza bowser.

Actually, I guess that's my "garbage food" although honestly don't think it was really bad or anything.

I'd find a pic but I can't find something that shows what it's like... it was basically just a literal jar of chocolate melted down basically.

Holidays are coming up, anyone got any favourite seasonal garbage food?

Mine is kruidnoten. Basically, tiny biscuits made with a spice mix very similar to pumpkin spice. Nowadays, they commonly have some sort of sweet coating, often something chocolate-y.

Another "garbage food" to add to my growing list- tater tots.  I do everything in my power to avoid processed foods as much as I can, but I love me some tater tots.  While some folks crave fries, I'm more about the tots.  That being said, I prefer my potato baked.

It still doesn't top the jalepeno popper as my king of cheat meal food.

Is this a relevant place to say I wish vegetarian Peeps were a thing? Or rather the Peeps rabbits because Peeps proper don't have ears to bite off?

Also Salt & Pine had some really awesome fries -- more like potato wedges, had the only aioli I've ever enjoyed as dipping sauce -- when I went there last Friday and so I went back this Friday to discover they closed last Saturday so :^)))))))

(Meanwhile on the Worst Garbage Food front, The New Taj Mahal remains the worst Indian restaurant in Columbus. I don't think aloo gobhi's supposed to be watery. I don't think their "special korma" is supposed to be, period.)

I had some crispy fried french toast caked in cinnamon sugar this weekend.  I could FEEL it clogging my arteries.  It was the most delicious french toast I have ever had, even taking Denny's extinct Peach French Toast into account.

Than again, I always had the English Toffee Cappuccino with the Peach French Toast, so... the combo there was still a little better, I think.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is 100% guilty pleasure cereal.  The best part is drinking the milk that's gotten sludgy from all the extra sweeteners you added to it via the cereal.

These days, though, one spoonful and I'm done.  My body seems to reject garbage food, though it accepts jalepeno poppers and tater tots as cheat meal treats.

I can't believe I forgot to mention samosas in this thread.  Yes, along with tater tots and jalepeno poppers, that is a huge guilty pleasure food for me.

For those that don't know, the samosa is kinda like an Indian empanada usually filled with potatoes and peas, sometimes lentils too.  With mint chutney and tamarind sauce, samosas are glorious.  Pakoras (Indian vegetable fritters) are delicious too.  I tend to stay away from fried foods, but on those rare occasions I eat at Indian buffets I go for those.

I remember once hanging out with some friends and one was talking about the samoa Girl Scout cookies but accidentally said samosa.  After correcting himself, he and I both looked at each other and said, "but, yo, samosas are pretty awesome!"  That's when another friend and his Cuban girlfriend asked, "What the hell is a samosa?"  The second guy was trying to explain what it was while I was thinking of something familiar to compare it to but could not quite remember the word "empanada."  Then when I remembered, I hushed my friend and said, "A samosa is like an Indian empanada" and got the "Ohhh, NOW I get it!" reaction.

I love samosas but are they really garbage food?  I guess the outside is lightly fried, sure, but most of the volume is just potatoes and veggies and stuff.

Also is it weird that I am familiar with samosas but didn't know what an empanada was?  It's not like I'm Indian or anything...

My favorite garbage food has to regretfully, be pizza.  It is simply too nutritionally empty to be considered a healthy meal.  Still, a well made slice of pizza is sublime, especially when it's from a pie fresh out of the oven.

The thing with pizza is you can heavily adjust what it has or doesn't have... I mean you can load it with vegetables and a low fat cheese and make a much more healthy pizza, or go balls to the wall with extra xheese and bacon for an artery clogging nightmare, it's pretty much up to you and your wallet. It's usually made as junk food sure, but to call it a junk food is a bit unfair. It's baked, it "should" be made with fresh ingredients, and it's even vegan friendly if you want it to be. Sure it's not a salad or a quinoa bowl, but pizza kicks ass!

All things I am in agreement with you on.  I was referring more to the classic slice of pizza with mozzarella, sauce and crispy crust.  It's largely nutritionally empty even when made with high quality fresh ingredients.  Still, it is superior to junk food.

Hey, if pizza is your garbage meal, you're doing something right in terms of eating well.

And something I can outright call you both gross for. 7 layer dip is nassssty, and the only good combos are pizza, pepperoni pizza, and nacho cheese pretzel.

^ Your face is gross!  =P

Pizza flavor is OK, but doesn't hold a candle to the Combo magnificence that is 7 layer. I actually hadn't eaten Combos of any flavor in years before my wife brought home a bag of said magnificence. Love at first bite.

New one to add to my list: Green Giant Broccoli Veggie Tots.  Processed, probably filled with sodium, and all the bad stuff outweighs the little nutrition from the scant piece of broccoli in each tot, but oh so addictively tasty.  Those, tater tots, and jalepeno poppers (with cream cheese) are my favorite garbage foods.
