Title: Completion List 2017
Post by: ultra7k on January 04, 2017, 07:58:21 PM
Here's our annual completion list thread. May your backlog grow ever smaller - or at least stay the same size.

If you haven't beat any games yet in the calendar year of 2017, maybe set a goal? I'm going to aim for a game a month - anything above that is gravy. Of course I'll still try and platinum/100% as much as I can, but only within reason. I feel 2017 will be busy for me personally.

Have had a blast playing Darkest Dungeon, but finding it hard to progress in any meaningful way. I may just have to abandon this for World of Final Fantasy.

Currently playing FFV and Ara Fell. Hoping to beat both games by the end of the month.

I'd like to try Darkest Dungeon. Just waiting for a personally agreeable sale price.

As Arvis was kind enough to point out to me (something I hadn't even realized), I had achieved a game a month average this past year. That's good enough for me, so that's my goal this year.
I'd mainly like to put a dent in my PS3 back log (includes Wild Arms 2; Suikoden 2; Tales of Graces f; Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain; GT6; Jak & Daxter 1)  this year, because I'm losing interest in the system, and I find that I'd much rather play games on my PC these days. I feel I should try to get most of my intended (meaning, already paid for) PS3 stuff done before the system starts to collect too much dust...

Hah, I've already played through my first game of the year! The Deed! Which was very short but it totally counts because I say so please don't ruin this for me...

So...

1. The Deed

My goal for the year will be 50 games. Should be doable, considering how short many of the titles on my backlog are. I'm currently at 18/20 of my Steam-backlog-challenge-thing and I hope I'll be able to start a new list before the end of winter.

You have 20 games on steam? Hehe I wish mine was that small :3

No, more like 117, but my current backlog is ~30 games. I decided to take care of it in chunks.

Oh ok now it defiantly sounds like you got steam. Honestly I may start my own blogspot and try to complete my backlog.

Haha I think I have maybe 10-15 games total on Steam.

...But just under 100 on GOG. Most of which I'll probably never even get to (not in the foreseeable future, anyway), if I'm being honest with myself.  :/

Hoping to complete Final Fantasy XV in the next week or so and platinum it by the end of the month. Been busy with holidays and work.

Trails of Cold Steel 2, well technically I'm at the epilogue but I'm basically finished. I loved almost everything in this game, could have done without the incest stuff with Elise, the characters are great the plot was enjoyable, with a twist at the end I can't imagine anyone saw coming. I'm not sure I can call it my favourite game just yet but I fell confident the series is my favourite.

I finished Tales of Hearts R.

Wasn't the best game ever, wasn't the worst either. Comfortable length of time for an RPG in my opinion, if it's longer than 25-30 hours I'm probably not going to beat it, to be honest. Combat was fantastic, chaining combos is really fun and everything flows well. Plot was rote but I liked the characters and the skits were hilarious. I also think that "Power of Friendship!" stories are actually fine and get too much of a bad rap for being cheesy and cliche. Who doesn't like cheese.

Now I'm in a Tales mood and am playing Abyss (which is way longer than 25-30 hours, heh). Lots of technobabbly gobblygook but the crux of the plot starts to get interesting 10 hours in. People hate Luke for many reasons but I find him more interesting than MCs like Kor. Plus Jade is thus far my favorite character in a Tales game. More JRPGs need an old dude that shits on your party 24/7. Also his belt is Pac-Man shaped, which is essentially perfect.

1. The Deed
2. Science Girls

3. 7th Dragon III Code: VFD

Oh, look it's baby's first dungeon crawler, how cute! :D

... Okay, that's a little too mean. To be honest, I really enjoyed this game despite being well aware that the dungeon design is bland and the dragon mini-bosses are overused, but some of the details just make it work. The classes are all a lot of fun and even the basic stuff like mage has more to it than usual. I also grew fond of the characters, who were often less 2D and anime-esque than expected. Julietta for instance, is totally queer and the type that will sort-of hit on anything that moves, but there's this sweet little sidequest where you play messenger for a soldier who has a crush on him, and you find out that's because Julietta reminds him of his boyfriend who passed away. So, uh, a somewhat romantic sidequest about a faceless gay soldier and the whole thing is not treated like joke. Did not expect that. Also, despite the 'town' area being fairly small, the variety of NPCs is pretty decent, to the point where there are random black people walking around without being token black characters. And no, not even the fantasy-type that's just kind of tan so they look exotic, nope, regular black people. Did not expect that in a JRPG that takes place in future Tokyo.

Anyway, I liked the characters and stuff. Which made it that much harder when...
Chapter 6 happened and the game killed everyone but the playable characters. It was like 'You get a gruesome death, and you get a gruesome death, everyone gets a gruesome death!' Not even the cats were spared! I loved those cats! And, okay, it's sort of fixed after defeating the final boss, but it's one of those bittersweet endings and ugh... I just want Yuma back! He and one of my characters went on an adorkable date, and they love eachother, and now my poor Rune Knight will be all alone and sad D:
I expected that in SMT 4: Apocalypse, not this cute little dungeon crawler RPG in which hackers and maids battle dragons...

Nice. This is one of those I've been wanting to play over the years, but never got around to it. Really enjoyed the first one back in its day.

1. Items Kingdom Shop

It was alright. It was worth the money but it didn't scratch that Recettear itch that I had.

2. Fallout: New Vegas

I had a lot of fun with it. There are a lot of aspects like the speech system in it that I preferred over Fallout 4. That said, I wasn't fond of how they just blocked off where ever they didn't want you to go with difficult monsters. They really wanted you to follow their path to the Strip. Even fully patched, the game was still buggy. I had to reload every few hours.

3. Diablo 3

It was alright. I wasn't too gone on the story but it is not like the previous games were any better. I did like talking to the Scoundrel and Templar in between quests. Legendary items seemed pretty common too. I may go back eventually to try the harder difficulties and other things but right now, I am burned out.

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider

Loved most of it, but the third act was a bit of a letdown. It had some great moments, like the platform section in the planetarium and the entire sequence of taking down the second gate (particularly that final run from the last trebuchet to the destroyed gate) but it also felt a bit too like the last game, what with the immortal soldiers and all that. Plus the final battle was frustratingly dumb. The first part overdid it with the soldier waves and felt a bit like if they made 300 but called it 1, and the second part was incredibly annoying when you're supposed to distract ??????? with one of the two tiny cans hiding amongst the rubble while not being spotted in that tiny arena.

All in all, though, I did enjoy the game and will probably try out the other modes if I ever find time between everything else this year.

1. The Deed

3. 7th Dragon III Code: VFD

4. Hero's Saga Laevatein Tactics
... Wait, why did I play this again? A week ago, I thought 'I'd like to play a SRPG I haven't played before' and then this happened.

It was okay, I guess. Kind of like a mix of Tactics Ogre, Langrisser and Crystal Warriors. A bit tedious but a good challenge. Story was incredibly boring, but it gets some bonus points for the accents. Never thought I would kill a German zombie that wasn't a nazi.

Title: Re: Completion List 2017

It was relatively short. Took me less than 20 hours. Still, this was just a 'for funsies' game, no review money involved, so I might have played a bit too much...

Also, I'm not entirely sure why I have this game. I think it was in a stack of DS RPGs I bought years ago?

In any case, it did exactly what it needed to do, so... whatever.

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider

2. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth 2: Sisters Generation

I finally got around to seeing the true ending, and while I still have the two conquest endings to see, I'm adding this to the list now in case I decide to skip those. The games are still fun for me, between the mindless grinding that I find incredibly relaxing, to the near endless supply of challenges and unlockables that could keep each title going forever, and I still think the writing and VA work in this series has improved by leaps and bounds with each game.

1. The Deed
2. Science Girls
3. 7th Dragon III Code: VFD
4. Hero's Saga Laevatein Tactics

5. Natural - Beyond Nature -
A short, sweet and sad little visual novel I played to review. You can play the demo (http://zeiva.net/game/natural_demo.html) if you want to see for yourself.

6. Mercenaries Saga 3: Gray Wolves of War
I nearly forgot this came out! It's the third game in a series of SRPGs inspired by Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics. It's cheap (/$5,99 for a 15+ hour game) and compact, which makes it perfect for when you want to play a no-nonsense SRPG but don't have the time to play through one of the classics yet again. Sadly, there's one thing it shouldn't have in common with Final Fantasy Tactics but does: a very unpolished translation. But, on the other hand... the antagonist is a total Char! Like, there's a mask and everything!
But instead of a mech there's a red demon and gets to attack twice a turn. Which is for the best, because I don't think I would have survived for long if it was actually three times as fast.
Actually, now that I think about it, the plot as a whole felt kind of Gundam-y but without mobile suits and set in a fantasy world. That's pretty cool, if you ask me.

From what I've gathered, we're not missing too much. These games are pretty much stand-alone in the way the Suikoden games were. They take place in the same world, but in diffferent years/locations. Claude, the main character of 2, does play a small part in 3, but that's more like a nod to players of the last game (you get to fight him) than something you need to be aware of to enjoy the story.

3. Kingdom Hearts 2.8

Loved the UR4 stuff, really makes me look forward to KH3. KH3D still rubs me the wrong way, but I don't hate it quite as much as I would have were they not so lenient with unlocking the epilogue.

Might play A Fragmentary Passage once or twice more if I get another KH itch before KH3 releases (most likely skipping 1.5 + 2.5)

Best Tales game in a while. It's nice how to combined the darker themes of Xillia 2 with a more Graces like battlesystem. They still need to relearn how to design dungeons, though.

Got the Cordelia ending, which is fine. Would've never been able to get the pie ending anyway since my level was way too low to handle the upper levels of that final dungeon. Might have had an easier time had I discovered the Windrider recipe much sooner, but oh well. I liked the ending. The True Ending part made my eyes a bit damp.

2. Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky.  I'm trying to tie up as many lose ends as I possibly can before the Switch drops.  This was fun but took freaking forever.  The end wasn't as satisfying as I wanted it to be either.

I can finally put an entry on here:

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes - Had a ton of fun playing through the story missions with my son. We've only unlocked about half of the game's content, but the credits have rolled on the main game, so on this list it goes.

I think I had more games finished by this time last year, but I was playing through them one at a time, instead of 3 or 4 at a time, as I am doing now. At least this way, it feels like less of a chore to play through them. Hoping to wrap up Graces f and Borderlands 2 before the end of March...

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider
2. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth 2: Sisters Generation
3. Kingdom Hearts 2.8
4. Atelier Rorona

5. Atelier Totori

True ending achieved! Truly a wonderful game. So much so that I might have to find a spot for it on my Top 10 games list whenever I have another reason to compile one. And while I've certainly grown fond of the Atelier series these last few months, there's just something extra special about Totori. I mean, I've already started Meruru and I can sort of tell I'm not going to enjoy it quite as much. It certainly doesn't help that the production value of Meruru seems lazy and depressing in comparison, with noticeable framerate stuttering and poor sound mixing even with the volume level sliders adjusted.

1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Second Chapter

Finally!  About 110 hours.  It really was close to twice the length of FC, despite Jawshy's sarcastic reaction to the idea.

This is as close to a perfect JRPG as I think we can get in the modern era.  Classic aesthetics, but still beautiful.  Incredible writing, both on a dialogue level and regarding the overall plot.  Does utilize a few anime clichs, but handles them well.  The characters are vibrant, interesting, and full of personality.  And the battle system and character building are straightforward, but just deep and varied enough to scratch that itch for customizing.  The ability to approach battles from various angles depending on your party and builds never stops being fun.  One of my most fun battles was when I used Silver Thorn with Olivier and confused all but one of 7 monsters coming at me in a midboss fight.  Most people consider moves like Silver Thorn and Zodiac to be a waste, but I was able to use them to great effect.  A testament to the level of balance in this game, it offers an awful lot of player freedom while still giving that freedom just enough of a boundary.

Final Score: 10/10
A fantastic JRPG with some of the best characters and plot in the history of the genre.

Up Next: Final Fantasy XV!

^ Spending that amount of time on a single game that's not a vast open world is truly dedication. Hats off to you.

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes

2)Tales o Graces f Ive decided to abandoned the post-game content, and call this one complete. Back-tracking through old dungeons is a HUGE turn off for me, so fuck it. Yeah, the enemies are stronger and the loot better, but not much else was done to make it feel different than the main game. I just feel like Ive had enough of the game at this point.
However, oddly enough, some of the best dialogue/interactions seem to have been saved for this part of the game.  Especially when the gang calls out Hubert on his feelings for Pascal. I am interested in what happens to the characters from here on out, so Ill probably just read a FAQ/synopsis to get the rest of the story.
I enjoyed my time with the game. Its the first Tales game Ive finished since playing Symphonia Part Deux YEARS ago. The battle system in Graces f is top-notch, and the crafting system if interesting and deep enough (although the game didnt bother showing me the tutorial on the latter until the main game was almost finished, for some reason). Overall, the story is interesting enough. It really does have you questioning what the heck is going on in the first half. However, the main bad guy is a bit anti-climactic. I feel so different than everyone else. Ive been mistreated, and now I hate the world, and am going to re-mold it in my preferred image. *Yawn*
There is some strong JRPG melodrama peppered throughout the game, but thats to be expected. None of the characters were truly irritating, but they did get annoying at times. Mainly because they felt the need to verbosely proclaim their resolve and reasoning to their compatriots every 10 minutes. We all get why youre doing this, guys. Of the character roster, I like Malik and Lambda-free Richard the most, because they seem to be the only ones who have their heads on straight. Plus, Malik is bad-ass in battle.

I have Xillia waiting in the wings, but Im gonna play it later in the year. Need a break from Tales for now.

For as small as the world of Graces feels due to the way they set navigation up, that game has a ton of content, probably more than even Vesperia or Abyss, I don't blame anyone for not wanting to get through all of the post-game content. I gave it a try, but stopped at about 85 hours.

Thanks!  Just to be clear, there wasn't a ton of "dead" time there, nor hours grinding.  It was a lot of reading, which I enjoy.

You ain't lyin'. I do have to give them props for making the world feel larger than it is. However, like you, I had my fill at that point (roughly 65 hours in), and realized continuing any further would have simply been because I was forcing myself. In my opinion, that kind of feeling/drive should never be mixed with video games.

I started skipping some of the dialogue in the mid-late game, because the same shit was basically being said over and over, especially by Asbel. That dead horse was beaten to a bloody pulp.

Fable II - Very short. No final battle?? Maybe there was one and I didn't realize it? Still fun.

2. The Legend of Heroes - Trails in the Sky (75 hours)
3. The Legend of Zelda - Breath of the Wild (127 hours)
4. Shoot1Up (45 minutes)

On of these games is not like the other ones... one of these games doesn't beloooong.

I've played shmups for a long time, and I've gotten to a point where if I practice enough I can clear almost any overhead style game (eventually), but even then, I'm not SO good that I waltz through hard mode on the first try without even coming close to getting a game over.  Shoot1Up is a great idea (phalanx!) and has a killer soundtrack but the standard playthrough mode was way too easy.  Luckily there are more challenging options.

4. Atelier Rorona

6. Atelier Meruru

And that concludes the Arland Trilogy. Was quite a journey that took me from being unable to get into the Atelier games due to the time mechanics, to actually finding myself more engaged than other games mostly due to those very mechanics. The games are actually helping me in my own life realize that there just isn't enough time to do everything there is to do and I need to start thinking about the things I really want to do.

But before I get too deep into my own personal neuroses, I'll simply say that I had a lot of fun playing through the games and I feel more accomplished--having completed them so quickly--than I've felt in a while. Though now I remain curious during what fight Meruru's version of Terminus was supposed to play.

I just finished Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana.

I'm not done with the You Tube videos of Atelier but I have all the cutscenes on YT if anyone wants to watch.

So I finally finished my first game of 2017. For whatever reason, life got in the way, and gaming took a real back seat, plus I think I was sort of burnt out from the previous year, so I took a long hiatus from gaming. I dabbled a bit here and there, but nothing really took.

Rolled credits on FFXV on Friday. Game completion took about 32 or 37 hours, I can't recall which. Have some unanswered questions about the game, but unfortunately will not have time to go back and do the platinum as I beat it on my brothers machine while taking care of grandma while the parents were out of town. Started the game last Tuesday, and beat it by Friday. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and thought that the ending was nice touch.

Characters were roughly level 48 or so by the time I beat the game.

Tons of quests to do, and it is certainly easy to just get burnt out doing them, kind of like in Dragon Age Inquisition in the Hinterlands.

However, what is with the difficulty spike in that last area? Yikes.

1.) Final Fantasy XV

1. Trails in the Sky SC

2. Final Fantasy XV
I don't think I've ever seen another game get so much hate online while being so incredibly good.  Something about that "Final Fantasy" in the name just seems to invite it, I guess....
Anyways, I loved this game, despite the problems.  The criticisms leveled at it, while sometimes fair, are absurdly exaggerated.  I enjoyed the battle system quite a bit, and really loved crafting magic.  Obviously the real strength of the game comes from the lifelike chemistry among the 4 playable characters.  For me, it never got old.  The design of the world was beautiful and I enjoyed cruising in the Regalia listening to classic FF tracks while taking in the scenery.  And the dungeon design was some of the best in the franchise.  Also, a shout out to the soundtrack, which was excellent, even if the game fought hard to prevent me listening to it.
While it's clear that XV suffered from a lack of focus in the directing, and it feels a bit too much like two different games mashed together, the final product is an impressive achievement, showcasing an absurd level of attention to detail not found elsewhere.

Final Score - 8/10

I definitely feel the Final Fantasy name adds a certain level of expectations that are...unique to each individual, to say the least. I'm glad you liked it, though. The characters & story were certaintly impressive considering what they had to work with, it's just too bad they had work under such odd circumstances.

1. Rise of the Tomb Raider
2. Hyperdimension Neptunia Re:Birth 2: Sisters Generation
3. Kingdom Hearts 2.8
4. Atelier Rorona
5. Atelier Totori
6. Atelier Meruru

7. Persona 5 - I said in the thread after I beat it that I would give an extended post of my thoughts on the game, but I still have yet to fully gather them. I loved the game, obviously, but something felt off and kept it from being better than P4 in my opinion. As others have pointed out, part of it is the pacing. Even the final series of events felt pretty anti-climactic. Perhaps once it's been a while I'll write a bit reflectively on my experience. I doubt this is one I'll be playing again any time soon. The quality didn't quite live up to the 125 hours it took me to finish it.

8. Darksiders (Warmastered Edition) - I almost didn't count this because the first time I played the game I got all the way to the end before getting distracted trying to find all the items and never finishing the final boss. This time I was happy enough to find all the relics, legendary skills, and abyssal armor pieces. Was still missing one skill, two shards and a buttload of upgrades, but I still felt pretty accomplished having not used a guide.Only regret I really have is not finishing the top-hat zombie fights. Found him four times and just couldn't think of where else to look.

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes
2) Tales o Graces f

3) Tales o' Xillia - Done-skeeze! Had fun. 'Tis a solid JRPG. Coming from Graces f, the battle system feels downright stiff, but otherwise, I enjoyed it more in every other way. Xillia does have its downsides, like the aforementioned stiff battle system (party AI pauses WAY too much, while enemy AI does not); uninspired dungeons; and strangely wooden voice acting for one of the main characters, but overall, it's good stuff. The story remains interesting, and the characters never got too annoying. I might even do a New Game +, but not right now. Need a break from RPGs for a bit. Gonna get on finishing Borderlands 2 and Infamous 2.

1. Fire Emblem: Conquest
2. Fire Emblem: Revelations

It took me a while but I finally finished Fire Emblem Fates after beating Birthright last year. Conquest was easily the best entry of the three, while the other two were too easy to faceroll using the royal family. I guess I could make it harder by restricting myself to crappy characters like Selena and Orochi, though in that situation I'm pretty sure I'd just use Corrin to carry everyone else doing 0 damage.

3. Lisa: The Painful
Short and...well, not so sweet. It's certainly a nice challenge in the gameplay department but I'm left wondering what the point of the story was. For me if you want to make a story dark and depressing there should be some kind of point to it rather than it being for its own sake, and this felt a bit like the latter to me.

4. Pokemon Yellow
Been playing the Virtual Console version of the game on and off and beat it recently. Kinda funny how easy it is to break Pokemon games, especially the earlier ones- I cleared the game like 20 levels below the last boss.

4) Infamous 2 - Played the shit out of this. Needed it after playing 2 Tales games in a row.
Went out the good guy way and made the sacrifice. Overall, not a bad game.  As I said before, it's pretty much Infamous 1.5, but that's not a bad thing if you enjoyed the first one, which I did. Kinda short and easy, though. More enemy types would have been better.

1. Trails in the Sky SC
2. Final Fantasy XV
3. FFXV: Episode Gladiolus

4. Nier: Automata
Wow, what a game.
Honestly.... I'm kinda finding it difficult to really say much here in review.  If anyone hasn't played it, please consider adding it to your list.  The story may not completely satisfy you the way it has for many.  I, myself, feel just the tiniest bit let down by the way the actual plot itself wrapped up.  In addition, many scenes and messages are legitimately off-putting, sanctimonious, or downright disturbing. But the way the game uses itself to tell the story is fascinating and unique, and for that alone it gets high marks from me.  Everything from the ending of Route B through to the beginning hour or two of Route C is some of the most amazing stuff video games have given me in years.  Maybe ever.
Unfortunately, while the endgame plot revelations are appropriately epic and thought-provoking, they're told rather poorly, which left me scratching my head just a bit at the end.
Gameplay-wise, this is just about a perfect 10.  Everything is fast, fun, and exhilarating, requiring the player to increase their controller skills just as much as the character needs to increase their in-game skills.  Weapon upgrading feels very satisfying, and learning how to combo various weapons with each other never gets old.  Slashing your way through hordes of machines without taking a hit is one of the most satisfying things you'll experience in games this year.  This game also utilizes unique "gameplay shifts" where it'll suddenly become a top-down or side-scrolling action/shooter.  These sections keep you on your toes, as they often require completely different strategies, and they keep the gameplay from being repetitive.

All in all, it may not be the best game I've played this year, but it's certainly my front runner for 2017 GOTY.

Final Score: 4.5/5

9. Akiba's Beat -

This game. This freakin' game. Such a massive waste of an excellent cast of characters. Beyond the characters, even the battle system showed some potential to be great. Imagine Mode made for some truly adrenaline pumping action with unlimited AP and J-pop blasting in the background, but then that just highlighted how boring the rest of the battle was. Regular attacks barely ever dented an enemy, so most battles were just grinding up to the next imagine mode so you can do some decent damage. Boss fights were even worse since it was waiting for a full imagine gauge to take advantage of damage boosts.

That doesn't even cover other problems with the battle system, like enemies being able to cancel moves far too easily, particularly with casters. Or the fact that there were, like 8 varieties of normal enemies total and everything was just a reskin of one of those eight. And waiting until the very end of the game to give characters access to EX Skills was really dumb. And while it might make a little sense in theory, in practice the idea that AP regenerates slower if it isn't at 0 makes it hard to fight strategically instead of just button mashing.

Then there's the environments. Akiba is a lot smaller in scope than the previous game, with even less reason to explore since all the shops carry the same stuff and the only things that actually happen in the overworld are main events or side stories, both of which are clearly marked on the map with icons and fast travel is just a button press away.

Dungeons weren't much better, being very samey simple mazes with flat floors amidst a themed background and the occasional similarly themed props. Plus the game forces you to revisit them way too often, thanks to some dull filler content and monster hunting side quests that will constantly reward one visit to a dungeon with another quest from that same dungeon. Some of the dungeons had puzzle-type obstacles, but they were very basic things we've seen before, like teleporters and switches that control more than one door.

I really feel like this game could have been good if some of the passion that went into the characters and writing had also gone into making the gameplay decent. As it stands, the experience it offers is tedious, baffling, and drags on for way too long.

What a slow year for gaming, personal record wise at least.

Just beat 1 scenario for Ys Origins, not sure I'll go back and do the other ones. Seems a bit of a slog compared to other Ys games.

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes
2) Tales o Graces f
3) Tales o' Xillia
4) Infamous 2

5) Tales o' Vesperia  - Just under 55 hours. Really enjoyed my time with this one. Definitely glad I resurrected the Xbox 360 for it. Good story/characters/skits/gameplay/dungeon designs/music. By far the best of the three Tales games I've played so far this year. Might just be my favorite Tales game of all that I've played. As I've said before, there is an undeniable old school charm that is sorely missing from more recent RPGs that I've played. That goes a long way with me. Also, Yuri's anti-hero nature is indeed refreshing.
The only big cons I'd give it are the fact that enemies are practically invulnerable when knocked down (really messes with the flow of battle), and there are some crazy difficulty spikes with a few bosses. Other than that, highly recommended.  Especially for fans of the series who haven't gotten around to it yet.

Next up is Lost Odyssey, since I have the 360 hooked up. Never finished it back in the day.

Really enjoyed the new characters, particularly Abnes and Copypaste! The games are still hilariously unbalanced. The final boss was doing 0 damage with her normal attacks, but could instantly wipe out 3/4 of my party with her special attack. This isn't that uncommon. One could have a def stat of 2200 and be completely immune to damage from an enemy, and another character with a def stat of 2150 could be getting their asses handed to them by that same enemy. The team really needs to learn how to craft a more nuanced RPG, but whatever. The humor always wins me over, and the plot of this one was also particularly fun to follow along with. Looking forward to diving right into V2.

3. FFXV: Episode Gladiolus
4. NieR: Automata
5. FFXV: Episode Prompto

6. Trails in the Sky, the 3rd
This is gonna sound weird, but from a gameplay perspective, this might be my favorite Trails game so far.  I know, I know, Trails is played for the story and characters, but because 3rd runs the characters at such a high level (and equips them appropriately), there are such great opportunities for effective minmaxing and build variety.  It never got old, for me.  Not only that, but this game has 16 (SIXTEEN!) playable characters!  The amount of variety in party-building is intoxicating, and each character is unique.  The good news is, the final dungeon of the game requires the use of all 16 characters, so you'll be able to fully experience each one.
Some may complain about the dungeons all being "samey" and a lack of traditional exploration, but the game was SO GOOD in every other important area (customization, strategy, writing, music) that I really don't think it's a big complaint.  I basically can't think of anything I didn't like about Trails 3.

Final Score: 10/10

Up Next: finishing FFXII The Zodiac Age, then moving on to Tales of Xillia 2

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes
2) Tales o Graces f
3) Tales o' Xillia
4) Infamous 2
5) Tales o' Vesperia

6) Magna Carta 2 - Finished right around 35 hours in. Character levels were in the mid 60s (only grinded once, for a brief period).
Reviews couldn't have said it any better: This is a decent, competent RPG. It borrows heavily from several JRPG tropes, but it doesn't feel entirely unoriginal. Story is barely interesting enough. The characters are all OK by me, but there is no real character development, aside from Juto (the main character). There is a lot of back tracking, too. Can't tell you how many times the Mare sent me to the Undersea Tunnel. Unfortunately, fast travel isn't a thing until close to the end of the game. There were some side quests I could have finished up towards the end, but it would have required even more back tracking. No thanks.
What really saves the game is the battle system. It flows nicely, and pulling off high-damage chains is satisfying (although the animations for the strongest special attacks are WAY too long..). It's also pretty cool that each character has 2 fighting styles. I think if the battle system were crap, I wouldn't have bothered finishing the game. That being said, the game is rather easy overall. Only a handful of fights were truly challenging. Thankfully, it's not so easy that it gets boring.
Also, a lot of the music in the game is surprisingly good. Including the Abazet track I posted a while ago.

7) Modnation Racers - Finished the main game. The last race was surprisingly easy, compared to some that preceded it. I've unlocked the majority of goodies.
Overall, not a bad kart racer. Can't compete with the likes of MK, but it's decent. What really separates it is that you can make your own tracks. My son and I have a lot of fun with that.

My list is definitely smaller this year... I think it's because I played a lot of shorter games last year. I also didn't finish several games I'd started this year. I'm at least gonna try to finish Wild Arms 2 before this year is out.

11. Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies

12. Ys I & II Chronicles + - Ugh. Ys I was a fine enough game if a little unintuitive. Had to consult a guide a few times, one because I didn't talk to a character the correct number of times. Ys II on the other hand was a nightmare of way too much backtracking, a few bosses that made the experience feel like a bullet hell shooter instead of an action RPG, and more of that unintuitiveness (though thankfully to a lesser degree) I did enjoy how the two games were tied together in the end, and the story definitely feels like it will inform the rest of the games even if they're not all directly related. So ultimately I'm hoping the suffering was worth it.

Plus now I've reached my goal of finishing 12 games before the end of the year. And the way things are going right now, that's probably all I'll be finishing this year.

7. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Defeated the Hell Wyrm, got the Kumbha and Zodiac Escutcheon, beat every Mark except for Yiazmat, got all 13 Espers, and finally beat the story over the weekend.  Did Trial Mode up to about 80.  That is far, FAR more than I ever expected to do with this game and I loved every minute.  All I really want to do now is fill out the Bestiary and that's it.

Honestly.... this is one of the best RPGs I have ever played, and almost certainly Top 5 mainline Final Fantasies.  The art design is the best in the entire franchise (stupid main character costumes notwithstanding) and the world-building is second to none.  While the main plot falls off sharply after a bit and disappoints overall, the exploration, gameplay, customization and growth mechanics make this one a true classic and not to be missed.  I'm already excited about a second playthrough, as there are myriad Challenge Run opportunities due to the game's rich diversity of mechanics and customization options (although I won't be utilizing the level 90 NG+).

Final Score: 10/10

Up Next: Tales of Xillia 2

Thank the heavens for Melia. Could not for the life of me figure out the final boss' second form until I just took control of Melia and had her spam lightning and then force topple with Starlight Kick whenever the thing tried to use its Talent Art.

Ending surprised me in a good way. The "stage" leading to the final boss had me thinking "Oh God, not another one of THESE* endings again!" but the actual final reveal was a nice turnaround on the classic. And boy does the game have some amazing music!

8) Singularity - A decent FPS. Takes and mixes ideas from Resident Evil; Bioshock; and Call of Booty. The shooting mechanics are fantastic, honestly. What separates the game a bit is that you gain a Time Manipulation Device (TMD), which can do some pretty neat things. ...Although, a lot of its use outside of combat feels too staged.
The story plays out in a 'meh' way, but the concept behind it is actually interesting: Back in the 50s, Russia finds a new and extremely rare metal, that basically allows a lot of crazy shit to happen (including time manipulation), with terrible plot-enhancing side effects, of course.
The difficulty actually decreases as you progress. About 2/3 of the way through, the game decides to make it rain, and starts offering you TONS of upgrade currency. Said upgrades are over-powered, in my opinion. You basically become a super soldier, even with only level 2 (out of 3) upgrades. Coupled with a late game TMD upgrade that allows unlimited use, and pretty much nothing can stand in your way.
All in all, not bad. I had fun.

1) Lego Marvel Super Heroes
2) Tales o Graces f
3) Tales o' Xillia
4) Infamous 2
5) Tales o' Vesperia
6) Magna Carta 2
7) Modnation Racers
8) Singularity

9) Dark Sector - Finished just in time for the new year. I've actually beaten it before, but that was several years ago.
Overall, it's a decent 3rd person shooter, with the addition of the "glaive" weapon/mechanic, which itself is what makes the game worth playing.
The story is cliche,  and the character models in cutscenes are strangely stiff,  but the game play is solid.

Time for my year-end tally.

1. Fire Emblem: Conquest
2. Fire Emblem: Revelations

3. Lisa: The Painful
4. Pokemon Yellow

5. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
6. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
7. Pokemon Ultra Moon

Didn't have much time this year, so finished far fewer games than I'd like. Hopefully 2018 will be nicer to me.

Throughout the last six months my best achievements I accepted in such games:
Horizon Zero Dawn
The Legend of Zelda
Shadow of the Colossus
That was a busy time full of my college writing assignments and other paper homework. But still, I was able to take the time for my favourite thing
