Title: RPG's you'd like to see re-released
Post by: xXMelancholiaXx on December 12, 2008, 06:37:00 AM
I'm sure we all have some RPG's we'd love to see get the Working Designs Lunar Silver Star Complete treatment with extra art work inserts and other omakes.

1. Panzer Dragoon Saga
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/LEMONedIScream/panzer_dragoon_saga.jpg)

This game needs no introduction as many fans of the series have been begging for Sega to re-release this game due to it's rarity. Honestly I'd like to see the whole Sega Saturn Panzer Dragoon Series re-released on a New Generation console. A lot of gamers didn't get an opportunity to experience this game or really even this series and it would be nice to see it re-released at least as a gift to the fans.

2. Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean

I have to say that Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean is probably one of my favorite RPG's ever. The story might have been a bit on the generic side but I enjoy the epic feeling and the art style. They really don't make them like this anymore. I also here that there was a prequel released on the Super Nintendo. I don't know if it was released in the USA or not.

3. Magic Knights Rayearth

I'm probably not the only person who didn't play this game since not many games were released. It was an Action RPG released on the Sega Saturn at the end of it's lifespan based on the Anime/Manga series Magic Knights Rayearth.

4. Seiken Densetsu (I, II, III)

I'm not sure which entry Secret of Mana is in the series but I'm pretty sure that not all of them were released in the US. I know they've been doing a lot of releases on the DS so many they could around to releasing these in the US. Of course I'd rather play them on my home console rather then a handheld but that's just me. Either way I'd be very content with them re-releasing all three games on the Playstation 2 or something.

These are just a few games I'd personally like to see re-released. I know that most of the list consists of Sega Saturn RPG's but that console had so many cool RPG's. I'm sure there are some that didn't even get released in the US that we don't even know about as well. :(

Panzer Dragoon Saga, definitely.  And Shining Force 3, all three scenarios in English.  I thought the Dreamcast would bring these to us, but sadly it did not.  I'd like to see a rerelease of Persona 2: Innocent Sin in English using the text translation that Oracle of Maiya did so many years ago.  Or how about a rerelease of Soul Hackers in English.  I want more cyberpunk!  I'd also like to see some classic graphic adventures released with compatibility to modern platforms, such as some of the classic LucasArts and Sierra titles.

And though this is wishful thinking that is never going to happen, I want Ion Storm to rise from its grave and rerelease a Director's Cut of Anachronox so I can experience the game as it was meant to be.

FF7 so I can buy it at a normal price.

Someone needs to do something cool with the Soulblazer games (Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma). Put them together on a DS cartridge or atleast make them available on the virtual console.

Other than that I'd like to see more Vandal Hearts games. Strategy RPG's seem to be fairly popular right now, so this would be a good time for a revival. A nice remake of the first game so it doesn't look ugly anymore, or a new installment.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (In English)
Lunar 2 Eternal Blue
Legend Of Mana
Suikoden 2
The SSI Goldbox D&D games.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (In English)

Do you mean Innocent Sin, since that's the Persona 2 game that never got released in English?  I don't know if the Oracle of Maiya text translation of Innocent Sin is still on the web, but that was extremely well done.  Still, rereleases of the PSOne Persona games would be great, especially a rerelease of Revelations: Persona without the hack job localization and with the Snow Queen Quest in tact.

And dalucifer- FF7 with a redone translation and gameplay visuals like those shown in that PS3 tech demo a few years back would be sweet.  I'd buy it.

First on my list would be xenogears. Screw the FF7 remake, give me Fei and Elly with cutting edge graphics.

Panzer dragoon saga... I doubt anyone spend more time with that one than I did. I wish that series would get the recognition it deserves. I wish the ending had more closure since there will be no direct sequel. It's unreal how much saturn owners had to suffer, especially outside of japan.

I'll always remember those first pics of grandia and dead or alive. Finally we could look forward to games that were just as good as the best playstation games. To add insult to injury, not only did these games stay in japan, later they were converted to the playstation and released worldwide.
I bought the console for virtua fighter 3, nights and sonic extreme, all promised by sega shortly after the machine released. You probably know what happened with sonic extreme. VF3 could be played on the dreamcast a few years later... At least nights was great...
Off topic, I know but when I get started on the 32 bit era I can't shut up. And yes, I ended up joining the PS wagon.

More than that got put out! So yeah, you can definitely play Innocent Sin in english and should hunt down a copy if interested.

Only PDS really comes to mind. Saturn RPGs would be great period, but that's one game that really needs a wider release.

Given how well the PS2 remake of Romancing SaGa did in Japan, I'm somewhat surprised and disappointed that they have yet to remake the other two RSGs.

I'd also like those Phantasy Star remakes to come to the U.S.

Oh, and I'm sure most of you know this but for those of you who don't, a PDS re-release is infeasible because the source code has been lost.

My list..which is very short  is this lol

Persona 2 (either version)
Lunar (both versions)
Legend of Mana
Xenogears

And..thats all of it. Of course i'm missing a few choice games that i personally prefer but i cant remember them right now T_T

Working Designs already did a re-release for that game. But yeah  I forgot about Persona 2. >_< They made two parts I believe Eternal Punishment and Innocent Sin. Atlus might actually repackage those one day to capitalize on the Persona series rising popularity. I guess we'll have to see...

No, seriously. There's too much real use for the word, the people who abused it are either gone or have matured since then, and it wasn't even implanted in the last board revision. There's no reason to block it now.

I mentioned this awhile ago, but:

A current gen reimagining of Shining Force, Shining Force II, Shining Force III (all scenarios), Shining Force Gaiden, Sword of Hajya, and Final Conflict.  Not specifically with super high end graphics, but with some reworked storyline, music, gameplay.

I think that would be fucking outstanding.  Pop some actual towns into the Gaidens, some exploration into the original, some localization into the second game, actually GIVE US the second scenarios of SFIII...

Oh, my God.

Give it the Lunar SSSC treatment with a fucking nice box, soundtrack discs, a Yogurt plushie...  If it was actually as good as I can imagine it, I would pay Sega $200+ for it.

Final Fantasy VII - You would make so much money Square Enix, so just remake it already!

Final Fantasy IX - So I can buy it for a normal price which ISN'T over the retail.

Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 - They just should!

Chrono Cross - So PAL gamers can play it.

Xenogears - Same as above.

Vagrant Story - Another game where they just should.

Alundra - Same as above.

Can't think of any more at this stage.

I don't think the Hitler and Na.zi stuff in Innocent Sin was any worse than in Wolfenstein or a Call of Duty.  What I think was questionable was that one teenage character carried a machine gun concealed in a guitar case and that the first boss in the game is your high school principal.  I believe the game was brought in for consideration very soon after the Columbine incident, so with that fresh in peoples' minds, kids with guns and killing the principal could not be good.  And towards the end, you could
Code: [Select]
"couple" Tatsuya off with Jun.  Eriko seemed to think it was way more than just a bro-mance.  And let's not forget the final boss, which is
Code: [Select]
an amalgam of all the characters' dads... in bondage gear!
And, on a funnier note, perhaps it's just a bias against Yukino Mayuzumi.  She plays a big part in the Snow Queen Quest and is a playable character in Innocent Sin (she only got a bit part in EP).  Too bad.  Yukino's my favorite female persona character.  She used to be my favorite Persona character, until Junpei.

Still, loved Innocent Sin.  Easily my favorite Playstation One era RPG and the longest review I've ever done for the site:P

Yes please. Fun fact that you may or may not know: there is a Japanese only Sega CD Shadowrun game that is mostly an interactive fiction game with a few combat parts (if what I've heard is correct). Not too much information on it and no translation anywhere.

Personally though I'd rather have Persona 1 re-released with remixed dungeons and a new translation :3

And my comment on the last five posts: What the hell?

Anyway, RPGs I want re-released:

Wizardry 8 - Too small of a release to begin with, and honestly it's one of the best PC RPGs to have been released in the past six or so years.

Arc the Lad Collection - Same about the limited release.

Ultima Collection - I want Ultima 7 on my DS. The REAL Utima 7.

I think I;ve also said this before, but I'd really like a Soulblazion of Gainigma collection for the DS, too.

Mostly repeats of what others said, but:

Persona 2: EP
Both Lunars
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
And of course Suikoden 2 because the average eBay asking price for that game gets more ridiculous every passing year.

What is it going for now? $120?

Konami must be blind, deaf and/or stupid. Atleast Squeenix noticed the whole Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyrie Profile thing and took action (pushed games as a GH titles, ports). They've got a decent PSP port and a not so decent localisation lying around somewhere, so they should give us the damn game already. English PSP Suikoden II = Free money.

I heard the Suikoden I & II ports sold less than 25000 copies in Japan, but the situation in America and Europe is probably different. Also, it can't be much of a risk to release the game in English, since it's just a port.

Yes. The Quintet trilogy:

Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma

This needs to happen. I don't care WHAT platform. I don't care if it's a straight port, or a full remake. Just...these games need exposure in the current market. IMO, Terranigma could do VERY well.

If you remake BoF2 why not also fix the bugginess, the skills that don't do anything, and uh... maybe make that system where the land type you're on effects your spells apply to more than two spells :(

I mean look, technically I LIKE BoF2 because I really like how its storyline and quests progress but goddammit I do NOT recall BoF1 having that many useless spells/skills/whatevs.

Oh and while we're at it, why not port the first two SMTs over to the DS and add an Etrian Odyssey-like mapping system.

Or just DS ports of the first two SMTs. I mean what the hell, Atlus actually listens to its fanbase. Why are we not bothering them about this? The games already had GBA ports. Just translate them and stick them on a DS cart. They're not even that text heavy.

---edit---

In regards to a SouBlazer port, I think adding stylus controls for that globe of light that rotates around you might be good, either to control how it rotates or where it shoots or whatever.

(I actually have a cart for Terranigma but it's the Japanese one since that runs about 40-60 dollars less than the Australian one. Also I can't play PAL carts anyway.)

And then Sony wonders why there's piracy on the thing.....

Yeah, but it's a PSX game. Not really a commercially viable system like the DS, and IS would be a much bigger translation project anyway.

Fixed. From what I have seen, most of the fans introduced by P3 don't give a fuck about Shin Megami Tensei games outside of the Persona series or just don't know of their existence. So, I doubt we'll be seeing anything like that. The small reprints of Persona EP and Nocturne on Amazon are probably the closest thing we'll get to this.

Anyway, I guess any old game I feel nostalgic about is a prime candidate for a list of re-releases.

Of course I'm the only person who wants Final Fantasy VIII remade.  Preferably for the PS3.  The game to this day still looks pretty good, it was really ahead of the curve when it was released.  I'd love to see the graphics updated for PS3 and a few new things added in.  I'm not sure if this thread was intended as literally rereleased or 'remade', so I'll stick with rereleased.  In that case, I'd love for Persona 1 & 2 to be released again.  Actually, Persona 2 was already re-released in limited quanities to Gamestop a year or two back, I was just dumb and didn't take advantage of it.  Another used game store bought all the copies we had and sold them all for 2 or 3 times as much.  Now I can't find either one of them for less then 60-80$ and I own all the other SMT games.

I'd say Suikoden 1 and 2 or Valkyrie Profile but I'm actually lucky enough to own original copies of those, along with Lunar 1 and 2 with all the wonderful collectibles.  Lately I'm having a hard time finding Grim Grimoire and I was too busy playing Odin Sphere to try it out.

The Japanese side of Atlus needs to do a graphical rehaul of SMT 1 and 2, and release that remake in Japan. At that point, I'm SURE Atlus USA would jump on it. But I think they're being honest. If they just run a translation on the SNES or PS versions of SMT1&2 and put it on any of the platforms you mentioned, it will not have been worth their time. However, if there's a graphically updated version that at least MEETS today's graphical standards, and then they release that translated in English? That's big bucks right there. Guaranteed.

I don't mean to sound like a loser, but if you go back and look at those games, they are ugggggly. And bland. The whole first person thing is yuck. And it's a little clunky to control too. Throwing it into SMT3 skin would certainly do the trick, but they wouldn't even have to go THAT far if they didn't want to.

I would like to see The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past completely reworked and re released in highdef. I don't want a 3D re imagining of it, keep it 2D... 3/4 overhead view, but give it way more detail. Keep the music the same, but have an orchestra do it. Would be awesome. I know this would be hard to do since Nintendo has yet to release a high def system.

Wasn't that a Europe only thing? Anyway, it is available in English and the PSP is region free, so you can play it if you want to. Tales of Eternia is fairly cheap in Europe (often even budgetbin cheap), so it shouldn't be very expensive to import.

Ah shit. I forgot it wasn't a US thing. But yes, the English version was released in PAL regions, and it's actually quite a neat little RPG. I managed to grab myself a cheap second hand copy for $22 NZD, so i'm sure you guys should find it for a similar bargain. And the PSP is indeed region free, so you shouldn't have any troubles with it.

Might make a decent WiiWare title. Though yes, it would be better off saved for the next gen.

Eternia's nice. That and Symphonia are the only tales games I've ever liked (though Phantasia and Abyss were the only other ones I played, and my unwillingness to play Abyss is partially because my PS2 is f'in up and making the battle have ENDLESS LOAD TIMES).

i'd like to see a shining force 2 remake just dont make it look like that lame sf1 remake for gba. dont get me wrong i liked the extra content but hated the graphic style. actually shining force 3 needs a remake too. the years have been kinder to sf2 than sf3.

It takes a special kind of talent to do a remake for a system with massively increased color palette and still end up with a game that's less colorful than the original.

I know it's a PC title, but I'd like to see a rerelease of Planescape: Torment so folks don't have to pay a hefty price for a copy.  It's kinda in that "best game that no one's played" category.

Other than that, whatever games I said in an earlier post.

Of course I'm the only person who wants Final Fantasy VIII remade.  Preferably for the PS3.  The game to this day still looks pretty good, it was really ahead of the curve when it was released.  I'd love to see the graphics updated for PS3 and a few new things added in

While I'm a huge FF8 fan (favorite in the series), I'm not sure it NEEDS a remake as much as some of the others. FF8 and FF9 were two games that just felt like they made great usage of the capabilities they had. The graphics were totally awesome at the time, as apposed to FF7s graphics, which looked laughable to me even back when it first came out. I'd say FF7 needs a remake even more... if only to make all the stupid fan boys shut the fuck up about it. FF7 was a much more flawed game than FF8, so it's more in need of a makeover.

However, the one I want the most is FF6 because, as I've said before, it feels like a 3D game that was forced onto 2D hardware, and would benefit substantially from a 3D makeover. Not because it's flawed (in fact, I think it's possibly the least flawed in the series tied with FF9), but because it has so much potential for increased awesomeness. I think I'll probably get my wish in the next 3 years on the DS.

I think I payed all of three bucks for Torment like, a few years back*. I didn't play it much, although I'll admit that I'm not that fond of any of the Infinity engine games. Just a liiiittle bit too much a tendency to throw stuff at you at once.

FFVIII's gameplay was pretty broken. I think adding in some sort of actual difficulty would be reason enough to remake it. Maybe make it so you can't just spam GF summons for... pretty much all of the game except for three or so boss fights?

Quote

Objectively speaking, FFVI was pretty flawed just in the sense that it had a lot of bugs.

* Maybe I should change this to pretty damn all of three bucks. That that this line makes any sense anymore because I just changed the rest of the post. Whoops.

Yet another RPG that never made it to PAL regions. I'm sure it'll get a re-release sooner or later.

If every boss had a certain level, instead on them levelling up when you do, the game would then be a bit harder I suppose.

Bosses gain stats faster from leveling than you do, so the leveling actually makes the game harder in theory. In practice, you can still blow through most of them by spamming summons.

JP, I believe the Phantasy Star games were remade with cel shaded graphics and all for the Playstation 2, but it's Japan only.  Surprise surprise.

Fox- I didn't think Planescape was that rare either... until I started digging around.  Either the game is rare, or sellers are just extortionists jacking up prices because it's a cult classic commodity.  According to wiki, it sold 400,000 copies, so it's not like Panzer Dragoon Saga which had a VERY limited run.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in any prior posts, but rereleases of some classic graphic adventures would be cool; namely LucasArts stuff like Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, early Sam & Max, Grim Fandango and Sierra stuff like the Gabriel Knight games.  I know Space Quest collection was released not too long ago and it's in game shops.

Other than that & Planescape; Panzer Dragoon Saga, Innocent Sin in English (using the Oracle of Maiya translation), Persona 1 without a hackjob translation, Soul Hackers in English, Final Fantasy 7 looking like that PS3 tech demo from a few years back, and a Director's Cut of Anachronox (that's my wishful thinking rerelease/remake).  And though I'm not a Suikoden fan, a rerelease of II is definitely something the fans clamor for.

I take the old translation if they offered some remixed dungeons :[

Anyway, how about a Quest for Glory 3 remake? That one seemed to need it the most.

Speaking of Planescape though, honeslty, I have no idea why someone hasn't put it up on Steam or something like that yet. Doesn't bioware have the rights to it? Online distribution would be like http://www.lesko.com/lesko_cart/images/standing.gif

I'm playing through panzer dragoon saga again all these years later and man, I can't even begin to tell how much this game blows all modern jrpgs out of the fucking water. I appreciate it even more now (it was already in my top 5 games ever) that I realize that all these years later only a few games games were able to reach the same level of briliance. Edge puts all those whiny emo jrpg protagonists to shame, same goes for the entirety of the supporting cast. The story is well paced and interesting, the game hits all the right notes in every conceivable aspect.
People who haven't played it have no fucking idea of what they missed, it's even better if you play the previous game before it.

Another one for me is xenogears, if they could remake the game according to their original vision and fix some fundamental flaws in the story and the gameplay it could be truly amazing.

Imagining these 2 games with current gen graphics... fuck...

Yes, Nintendo's lawyers basically gave them a "cease and desist" when the company attempted to put the game through the ratings board, prior to a VC launch. Turns out (surprise surprise) that the early 90s were much more lenient on IP copywrite and usage for games. Games weren't yet a mega-industry, and the smaller neuances of IP usage was a bit more liberal than it is today. Earthbound countained several references (or likenesses) to pop idols, bands, and products that Nintendo's lawyers thought was far too risky for today's scruitiny. Therefor, unless Nintendo decides to actually go back and massage over those possibly lawsuit-inducing references, it will not be rereleased. And because of the relative obscurity and lack of mass appeal of the series, the chances of that are close to none. Therefor, I think it's incredibly safe to say:

THERE WILL NEVER BE A RE-RELEASE OF EARTHBOUND

I'd like to see the old Goldbox SSI games released and playable - Pool Of Radiance, Eye of the Beholder, Curse of the Azure Bonds etc.

This, also lands of lore and others.

Weird story but I actually found these a lot more playable than like, Wizardry and the Bard's Tale. Except for... Silver Blades? or whichever one nerfed your party and nobody liked it even when it was new. What's funny is, as much as you goddamn miss all the time in combat, you still hit things more than you did in like later Wizarry games.

The Savage Frontier games were better though. The engine was more developed by that point for one thing.

As much as I hate to say it, I had trouble getting into Bard's Tale. I just found I was constantly dying, and it felt like I had no control over whether I was doing well or not.

I hated the game for these reasons.
No direction, and one wrong turn took you to a game over screen.  SaGa in general kinda sucks, to me.  I loved SaGa 2, but it at least tried some consistency.

And with that; not so many remakes really come to mind - I'd kill more for good revivals of titles.  ...what the hell happened to you Seiken Denset series?!?!

I thought of something else that could be awesome: Suikoden 1 and 2 for 3DS. They could layer the sprites in 3D and stuff instead of going completely 3D. It would be great for me to be able to play these... Especially on the go (AKA at school).

Are you talking about the original, great, Bards Tale or the action/comedy remake?

lol, as you can guess, Legend of Legaia. Or at least a REAL sequel to it would be nice...

This.

Original. Granted, it's been a really long time since I played it.

I just realized why a remake of DQVII would suck. Immigrant town.

Without memory cards its likely that you're going to need some of those impossible to acquire tags to get the people you need to meet the requirements of even one super town. And you really need some of those super towns to get have a chance against the bonus boss.

I'd also be keen to a remake of Secret of Mana, maybe including some of those mythical features that were planned but sacrificed when the Nintendo Playstation was doomed to never happen, or at least fewer bugs and better hit detection and ally AI. But then again, after seeing what they did to FFAdventure with Sword of Mana I'm not so sure I'd ever want to see that.

However a remake of Romancing SaGas 2 and 3 much like what Romancing SaGa received would be nice.

Also once FEDS2 makes it out to the US a 3DS remake of FEs 4 and 5 couldn't hurt. Especially since there's a lot more to work with characterwise in those games than in either FE1 or FE3.

I am an older gamer at this point (37) so some of my wants go back a long way.

I would love to seeremakes/reissues of:

Wasteland

the old SSI Gold Box games!
Pool of Radiance
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Secrets of the Silver Blades
Champions of Krynn
Death Knights of Krynn
The Dark Queen of Krynn

Even Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday  (had all of these for the C64 and wish I still did)

Oh yea! also Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, and Wake of the Ravager

Of course Planescape Torment

Also I would like to see a good remake of Bards Tale

Of course Planescape Torment

It was released on GOG.com some months ago, it's 9,99$ I think.

Pretty much this. I've been wanting remakes FE4 and 5 for a while though.
