What impresses me is how you're able to pack so much detail and intricacy into something so small.  Especially the leafer bunnies.

Outstanding work again.  You're quite good at this!

Also, I looked at your site and saw that you had a drawing of Mr. Flibble, which is awesome. :)  Until recently, my signature was a quote from Red Dwarf.

Tooker:  I'm afraid I don't actually know much of anything about Mr. Flibble, or the medium the character is from.  I drew it as part of an art project for a forum I used to frequent (all the members had themselves represented by a drawing, and the person in question wanted to be Mr. Flibble).

Long story short: Red Dwarf is a BBC sci-fi comedy series I love (despite the fact that it kind of went off the rails in its final seasons), and Mr. Flibble comes from an episode of that show. :)

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but MacGyver, you ever try making something about 10" high?

Just wondering, would be totally cool to see something like that.
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: MacGyver on June 27, 2011, 11:59:34 AM
I haven't made anything that large in years, but I have made some figures that size and larger, mostly Transformers.  The biggest figures I've ever made were about 17 inches tall.

Next project should be a foot tall something badass! :P Do it!
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently

I'm probably going to continue making things in the miniature scale for the forseeable future.  I just don't have the interest, or space, for larger pieces at this time.

If you've done it before I apologize, but can you talk about how you actually craft all of this?

Is there a name for your particular medium?

I'm quite in love with the Skeletal Tomb Guardian!

You must have really steady/precise hands, I can't imagine how difficult these must be to make. Also, I second Yoda's request above! :P

Post by: Azrael on June 28, 2011, 10:47:54 PM
I believe hobbyists call it miniatures, but I too am curious as to your process. I couldn't even imagine where to begin creating pieces like this. Also, what do you do with them? Do you sell them? Or is your home decorated with tons of RPG miniatures?
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: Vanguard on June 28, 2011, 11:10:06 PM
I imagine it's some sort of resin kit with something like a paperclip or tinfoil frame to ease with the shaping process. From there you just sculpt and keep wetting the resin to keep it malleable. At least that's how you make models for any tabletop game.
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: MacGyver on June 30, 2011, 11:54:25 AM
Yoda:  It's papier mache.  Strips of paper (usually newsprint) coated with glue and then wrapped around to create three-dimensional shapes.  You can use wire armatures as a starting point, but it's not essential.

Azrael:  I don't sell them--it's illegal/unethical to profit from someone else's intellectual property without their consent/compensation.  My home is, as you say, just decorated with multitudes of little beasties I've made.
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: Kiem on June 30, 2011, 04:55:54 PM
All the sculptures in this thread are paper mache? Seriously? Dang, that's impressive. Maybe elementary schools need to teach this kind instead of making masks lol

Would you take commissions on original IP creatures or characters?
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: MacGyver on July 05, 2011, 11:24:37 AM
I think most schools do teach papier mache, at least in the United States.  I can recall doing several papier mache projects in art class as a lad, usually by applying the strips to balloons to create hollow, lightweight constructs.

While I would consider doing a commission for an original work, generally, I just like to sculpt the things I want to make--I don't really enjoy having to deal with money, deadlines, and all the other stuff that goes with trying to turn a profit.
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: Tooker on July 05, 2011, 02:55:17 PM
I think Kiem meant they should make awesome stuff like this instead of the lame crap they made us do with papier mache. :)

Cool. Good job.

Could you make something from a Zelda, Elder Scrolls or Diablo game?
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently

Fyle:  The only Zelda sculpture I've made to date is an Octorok--I might make something else from one of the Zelda games someday.  Nothing from Diablo particularly enthralls me, and I've never played any of the Elder Scrolls games.

Here are my four latest pieces:

That Dragon Fossil looks rather philosophical.

I feel he should be wearing a top hat while carrying a chained pocket watch in his open hand. Perhaps even the dastardly villain mustache, a cane in his other hand (daimond studded top, of course)...and perhaps a railroad track and damsel rope-tied on it. (Don't forget the black cape too)
Title: Re: Some RPG monster sculptures I made recently
Post by: MacGyver on June 15, 2012, 11:01:15 AM
I was pretty much just trying to replicate the sprite's pose in 3D, but I agree that the pose has a certain philosophical flavor to it--I suppose an undead dragon, assuming it still had a mind, would have much to ruminate about.

Kin no Kagi

A key, crafted from precious metal, that can be found in ASCII's 1996 Wizardry Side Story IV: Throb of the Demon's Heart (Uiza-dorii Gaiden IV: Taima no Kodou) Nintendo Super Famicom roleplaying video game. Said title was one of the many Wizardry spinoffs published exclusively in Japan.

The Gold Key (Kin no Kagi) is located at the coordinates "18 North, 6 East" on the second basement level of the Ancient Cave (Ko no Doukutsu). Veteran RPG players should recognize that the Ancient Cave's initial quartet of levels are reproductions of the first four floors of the Maze in Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, as such, the Gold Key is found in exactly the same spot where it was located in the original Wizardry.

Materials:
Newsprint, white glue, and acrylic paint.

Dimensions:
7.7 cm/3.0 in. x 2 6 cm/1.0 in. (longest point x widest point)

Time:
A few hours on September 10, 2012.

Mieu

A female combat cyborg player character found in the 1993 Sega Genesis roleplaying video game Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom. The protagonist of the first generation, Rhys, Prince of Landen, discovers Mieu wandering without purpose along the shores of a lake in the Northeastern region of his homeland. A thousand years ago, Mieu served in Orakio's cyborg armies against Laya and her monstrous hordes. As Rhys is a direct descendant of Orakio, Mieu agrees to fight beside him on his quest to rescue his kidnapped fiancee, Maia. Because cyborgs don't age, both Mieu and Wren, her male counterpart, remain as player characters throughout the entire game, continuing in the service of both Rhys' son and his grandchildren. Like Nei of Phantasy Star II, Mieu fights exclusively with various wrist-mounted claw weapons.

Materials:
Paper envelopes, white glue, ink, and colored pencil.

Dimensions:
4.5 cm/1.8 in. x 4.8 cm/1.9 in. (widest point x highest point)

Time:
A few hours on September 10, 2012.

This is the prototype figure I made, earlier in the day, prior to starting work on Mieu.
It's just some generic elf girl in a purple bikini; it's not meant to be anyone in particular.
I don't know why, but I actually like her better than Mieu.

Are most of your guys made to move?  I always thought they were just posed and that's that.

It varies.  Some of them are immobile statues, others are fully articulated action figures.  It just depends on what mood I'm in when I model them (articulated figures obviously take more time/work than static ones).

Well, like I always say, they're mighty impressive either way.  But I'm even more impressed that some of them are articulated. :)

Here's a slew of new mini figures I've made recently. Alp, Gorgon, Kali, Morrigan, and Sylph are fully articulated miniature action figures from Shin Megami Tensei if..., and Neo Kaitonia is a static sculpture from Phantasy Star II. If you want to learn more, click on any of the rotating images to go to the figure's web page on my site.

This may have been asked earlier, but where do you keep all of these?

I keep my figures all over the place: on shelves, in boxes and drawers, basically wherever there's room.  The larger figures are the more problematic ones to accommodate for obvious reasons, while the miniatures can be stuffed almost anywhere (I've got dozens of them in a fishing tackle box for example).

Here's some more new stuff:

Might & Magic: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum Alien (NES)

Wizardry Side Story II: Curse of the Ancient Emperor Weretiger (Gameboy)

Back row, left-to-right: Katt (Breath of Fire II), Razorclaw (Transformers), and Byakko (Plasma Sword).
Middle row, left-to-right: Gimme Cat (Final Fantasy IX), Purse Cat (original design), Zenene (Final Fantasy VII), and Chewy Cat (original design).
Front row, left-to-right: Cham Cham - 2P Colors (Samurai Shodown 2), Weretiger (Wizardry Side Story II: Curse of the Ancient Emperor), Scratch (TMNT III: The Radical Rescue), and Jagwar (Archie TMNT Comics).
