Title: The ff8 card game: any similar things?
Post by: declaration on April 14, 2011, 11:18:37 AM
So I was thinking about this game recently and I realised the card game was the thing I remembered most fondly about the whole thing.

I loved the fact it was integrated early in the game. I liked the fact there were so many cards to collect. I liked the fact the cards and rules changed as you explored the world. I loved the strategy involved. But mostly I loved the fact it was present alongside a normal rpg experience.

So I was wondering if anyone had any game reccomendations which I might enjoy in a similar way. Doesn't have to be exactly the same thing just a similar side story about collection or something.

Thanks

Wait, there was an RPG bonus game in Triple Triad: The Three Disc Extravaganva?  I don't think I ever realized that.

The FF9 card game?

I thought some indie developers did make an actual software or internet one, no?

The FF9 card game sucked. You didn't get anything for playing it, and gameplay was annoying based on random chance.

It didn't matter to me; I liked both card games at first; but later players weren't worth the effort.  Maybe I just sucked at it, and kinda forgot about the game half way through, then fell behind, but man, the rules killed me in later FF8.

That's why when you go in space you spread the local rule of "no rule"

Tetra Master had an online version accessible through Playonline (A dumb client you need to flip through to play FFXI), but they shut down the servers for Tetra Master and massively downsized Playonline a few months ago. Now it's just an annoying client used for the sole purpose of getting in the way of you opening FFXI.

So pretty much exactly what it was like before.

Yeah, it's actually quite a good little strategy game. The in-game payoff for playing is quite high to boot. So it's got that going for it.

I enjoyed playing Tetra Master in FFIX. And I don't even like to play with cards... I like to collect them.

Yeah, Tripple Triad was great. IMO, it's the best minigame in the series, not that that's a great undertaking. Although, I REALLY loved the Chocobo digging and searching minigame in FF9. Those two are really the only minigames I go out of my way to play in the series. I stay as far away from Blitzball (ie: Madden: Zanarkend edition) and Chocobo Racing/Breeding as I possibly can. Tetra Master is kinda neutral. Not terrible, but it just seems like a less strategic version of Triple Triad.

Oh... and that Xenogears card game *shudder*

It's the only reason to ever play FF8, IMO.

Not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand, but Pokemon HeartGold's Voltorb Flip is addicting as shit. I probably dumped 10 hours or more into that thing.

You won some shitty prizes and more cards for winning that tournament that was part of the main plot didn't you? That's something right?

Yeah, at one point in the game (and ONLY one) You get the chance to win a Rebirth Ring if you come in first place.

So no other games with similar collection based side quests running through?

Xenosaga Episode I has a pretty neat trading card game in it. It's more similar to magic the gathering than Triple Triad though, but I spent a while with it. It's fun but all you get for playing it is useless junk, and more cards.

Tales of Eternia had a mini-game too... but it was so optional and useless I don't even remember what it was.

Blitzball was pretty cool.

it certainly helped that the music that played during it was catchy as hell

that game was basically UNO and i was fun as hell. i will boot that game up sometimes just to play that. for some reason i love to hear Farah say: "awww icant win"

Blitzball was pretty cool.
i agree but a lot of people here didnt like it but it at least had some worthwhile prizes. dark matter anyone?

Suikoden has a gamling game in each one, and I guess the characters themselves are the collectables.

The World Ends With You has Tinpin Slammer. Nothing else really comes to mind though.

I could never ever win the ToE UNO game.  I hate when it's based so much on chance like that...

I liked the Abyss/Vesperia poker.  Unfortunately, bets only were so much, and you essentially could never lose if you played smart enough.  I can't remember a mini-game I really liked otherwise; too many are just filler, and I've hated colliseums (if those count) since FF7's.

Triple Triad: Better than drawing.

Tetra Master: My A lost to a 0? WTFITS!?!

Blitzball: Do you have Jecht Shot? y/n; If 'y' abuse the fuck out of Jecht Shot; Else reset and get Jecht Shot;

That said, I did like DQV DS's Bruise the Ooze. At least, a lot more than DQVI's Slime Curling.

FFX-2 had that sphere break game which was kind of cool although the only thing you really got from that was the Lady Luck Dresssphere.

I think the biggest problem of mini-games are that they are too long.
Triple Triad was fun because a game lasted about a minute maximum. As opposed to a Blitzball game which is like what? 12 minutes?
At that point, it's not a mini-game anymore, it's an entire game...

Also, actual rewards are always fun.

Just remembered. Dragon Quest 8 had a really cool monster battle arena minigame where you went all around the world capturing monsters to fight it in it, and you actually got pretty cool stuff for winning in it (i think) like rare equipment.

It was pretty fun, but the fact the AI chose actions randomly for the monsters was frustrating sometimes when it went full retard mode -_-

you can win i just wish you didnt have to play as Reid.

also persona 2 had a casino i made mad bank there. also the poker in TotA was so addictive to me that i unlocked everything the first time i went in. also grandia 3 had this weird gambling minigame.

Pinta's Quest (Skies of Arcadia) was a great minigame definitely worth mentioning..
This was like 7th grade for me, I remember bringing my VMU to school and playing it during class. Eventually my friends would want to play because it was a reasonably fun diversion from paying attention in class. By the time I got home I would have a ton of loot.

That was pretty awesome, kinda makes me wonder what else could have happened with the VMU. Definitely no analog to that in any of today's systems.

I love the spectrum you see for FF minigames.  Love to outright hate.

I liked the way they did Chocobo breeding in general but I always thought the racing aspect was kinda spent
