Single-Player RPGs / Re: Top 10 RPGs Poll

It's interesting how until now, except Baldur's Fate II (twice), Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex, all of the games that were mentionned are Japenese RPGs!

Edit: they are already sold out.

Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPGs you're ashamed to like?

Well I did sort of enjoy Last Rebellion, to the point I actually got the platinum for the game... It was in a time were there was like 3-4 JRPGs on the console, so it's not like there was much else for me to enjoy back then. I recently realized that not only is the game considered very bad, but that NIS themselves said they were sorry to have released a game so bad...

I have the first edition of The Sky: Art of Final Fantasy, which was limited to 1000 and was signed by Amano. It comes with a few goodies compared to the new slipcase edition: it comes in a box set, includes the book "All About Yoshitaka Amano", a flipbook, an acetate print, postcards as well as a card signed by Amano. I realize it's an extremely rare and valuable item, although I'm considering reselling it since I'm not actually collecting artbooks, and I think that an actual collector would probably enjoy it more than I do.

It's opened, although I never actually read it. I just took a look at the contents and quickly flipped through them though everything is still as new and the box set was carefully preverved (in a smoke-free, pet-free environment).

I'm not set on a fixed price, so if you're interested, please make an offer! :)

The Helper Monkey / Research on the most important RPGs of all time
« on: March 06, 2014, 08:10:50 PM »

I'm currently part of a research group on video games genres, and I'm myself assigned to RPGs. The ultimate goal over the years will be to be able to describe in details the evolution of the genre, although a first step will be to try to determine which games are considered as the best and most important of all time. It's important to us to have varied sources, such as academia, media and the community of gamers. That's where I need your help, as RPG fans and specialists. I would like to know which RPGs you consider as essential. You can answer either here or by PM, and I'll be glad to compile and share the results, which I'll do next week. Your help will be greatly appreciated as your opinion will be crucial for my research! Here are the general criteria:

-I don't ask for a specific amount of games. It can be a top 3, a top 20 or any amount option you'll prefer.
-Please let me know on what general criteria your choices are based. I do not ask for anything specific.
-For each game, please add a short explanation for that specific choice.

Thank you!

Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys

Given how unconventional the name is as a title for...well, anything, I agree with this.
The game's name is never really pronounced through voice over work either, unless you see the japanese characters that demonstrate it's "yeez" over "wise".

If I'm not mistaken, didn't the manual of the first north-american release of Ys mentionned it was pronunced "eece" as in the word "fleece"? It also seems confirmed by the the original writing イース or iisu, which does use a hard "s" pronunciation over a softer "z", so I guess both yeez or wise would be wrong. And since it's in katakana, we can consider that it is only the closest way possible to render the intended pronunciation in Japanese. Hence I think that we can consider "eece" as the official pronunciation, or either way the closest one we can have in English, especially since it was in an official release and that the japanese pronunciation seems to confirm it.

^A simple typo caused by being as excited as a school girl.

Any word on the price of the CE, or is it a pre-order bonus thing?

Gamestop has it priced at $54.99. No one else seems to have pre-orders up at the moment, so I'm not sure how accurate that is...

Given what happened with the Wind Waker HD LE, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual MSRP would be 49,99$ but Gamestop decided to add 5$ since they will most likely have it exclusively yet again, given their past record with Nintendo... Hopefully they will produce more of it this time, since Nintendo tend to highly underestimate demand for their collector's editions...

Wow-ee does NA get the short of the stick in that deal or what...? I am going to pick up a Wii-U in the not so distant future. The euro deal would've had me sold. If I buy Windwaker I want the Ganondorf figurine damnit!

Sounds like the limited edition will also be released here! :)

I have a feeling this will quickly become a highly sought-after collector's item...

Well, apparently those new copies don't even come in the original steelbook cases... So it's definitely not worth 85$. Since the original print was labeled as a "limited edition", it would actually make sense for Nintendo to re-realease a regular edition in a standard Wii case at 40-50$. But this whole "vintage" games magically appearing at Gamestop is sketchy as best. The unused Xenoblade codes coupled with the new packaging for Metroid do seem to confirm the theory of a quiet reprint masked as used games.

I'm hoping they'll go the same way as the other Wii re-releases (Mario/Kirby), with a nice packaging, artbook and soundtrack! ^^

After my Hyrule Historia Collector's being cancelled, recently my Figma Link Figure was also cancelled (apparently Diamond couldn't get it at all)... as well as my The Art of Portal 2 pre-order. Gee, it's not my month! With the recent Virtue's Last Reward Amazon pre-order fiasco, I'm starting to think pre-order can't even guarantee you'll get an item anymore :(
