What a slow year for gaming, personal record wise at least.

Just beat 1 scenario for Ys Origins, not sure I'll go back and do the other ones. Seems a bit of a slog compared to other Ys games.

1.) Final Fantasy XV
2.) Ys: Origins

Odinsphere coming up next, whenever I get around to it I suppose.

So I finally finished my first game of 2017. For whatever reason, life got in the way, and gaming took a real back seat, plus I think I was sort of burnt out from the previous year, so I took a long hiatus from gaming. I dabbled a bit here and there, but nothing really took.

Rolled credits on FFXV on Friday. Game completion took about 32 or 37 hours, I can't recall which. Have some unanswered questions about the game, but unfortunately will not have time to go back and do the platinum as I beat it on my brothers machine while taking care of grandma while the parents were out of town. Started the game last Tuesday, and beat it by Friday. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and thought that the ending was nice touch.

Characters were roughly level 48 or so by the time I beat the game.

Tons of quests to do, and it is certainly easy to just get burnt out doing them, kind of like in Dragon Age Inquisition in the Hinterlands.

However, what is with the difficulty spike in that last area? Yikes.

1.) Final Fantasy XV

I've been in an absolute gaming funk since the new year. I feel like I got burned out on Darkest Dungeon, and that turned me off from having any real desire to play games. Slowly picking up the pieces, and starting Fire Emblem Fates again (left off at 20 some hours last time I played) and looking to beat it maybe next week. Hopefully that will get me rolling for this year.

Here's our annual completion list thread. May your backlog grow ever smaller - or at least stay the same size.

If you haven't beat any games yet in the calendar year of 2017, maybe set a goal? I'm going to aim for a game a month - anything above that is gravy. Of course I'll still try and platinum/100% as much as I can, but only within reason. I feel 2017 will be busy for me personally.

Have had a blast playing Darkest Dungeon, but finding it hard to progress in any meaningful way. I may just have to abandon this for World of Final Fantasy.

1.) King's Quest Ep.1/2
2.) History Legends of War: Patton (Platinum)
3.) Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Platinum)
4.) Day of the Tentacle Remastered (Platinum)
5.) Stranger of Sword City (Platinum)
6.) Trails in the Sky SC
7.) Stella Glow
8.) Adventures of Mana (Platinum)
9.) Trails of Cold Steel (Platinum)
10.) Ys: Memories of Celceta (Platinum)
11.) Final Fantasy X HD
12.) Final Fantasy X-2 HD
13.) Ys I & II Chronicles
14.) Trails of Cold Steel II (Platinum)
15.) Lara Croft Go (Platinum)
16.) Yomawari: Night Alone (Platinum)
17.) Assassin's Creed Chronicles
18.) Letter Quest Remastered (Completed)

Beat the three games that make up Assassin's Creed Chronicles, and they all had a distinctive feel. Playing the India missions really made it feel like playing Prince of Persia 2 from way back in the day. The three games required some pretty precise platforming, and a couple head scratchers here and there, but was ultimately fun - maybe the most fun I've had with an AC game since the first or second iterations. The comic book style cut scenes, and story arc over the three games made it fun. It almost gave me a hankering to go watch the movie, but apparently it's really bad. Solid game, but it looks way better on PS4 than it does on Vita - but I'd never have known this if I never had to watch YouTube videos.

Letter Quest Remastered is a game that really, really needed a platinum trophy. The overall trophies are picked from some of the random quests you can do in game to get more gems and stuff - overall it was fine, especially since it was free with PS+. It's like your typical word game, like Words with Friends or that Bookworm game made by Popcap games back a few years ago. Nothing major to write home about, but was a nice palate cleanser after ACC.

I guess I'll be delving into Darkest Dungeon next.

Rolled credits on Yomawari - game is legitimately creepy, and definitely gets that survival horror feel down pat. Game was fairly easy though, and would have had the platinum a lot faster if not for stupid playtime requirements for the final trophy.

Doing some digging on the internet revealed a lot of back story that is probably culturally significant in Japan, and is not revealed directly to the player if they don't know about it. Of course, this game is more of a show than tell, and I think it does it quite well - and it does give you a few jumps here and there as well as send shivers down your spine. I'd imagine that playing with headphones yields the best result, especially given the atmosphere of the game, but  I'm too much of a coward for that.

Next on the dock - Darkest Dungeon, Assassin's Creed Chronicles, X-Com or World of Final Fantasy - but I'm not sure which is going to grab my attention.

Just rolled credits on Lara Croft Go for Vita. Originally started playing this on iOS when it came out, but hey, if it has trophies I'm going to play it on Vita. It's a great puzzle game - and I love me some Tomb Raider. Always thought it would have been nice to have an actual Tomb Raider game on the Vita, but I guess this is as close as it gets. Nice little experience to take a break from lengthy RPGs.

Going to move on to Yomawari next, unsure if I'll grab the platinum on it, but I might give it a shot. If I play hard, maybe I can get to 16 completed games by the end of the year.

Just wrapped up ToCS II, for whatever reason those last ending scenes hit me with a bit of an oomph - and that last image was very idyllic and representative of how I felt of the two games as a whole. ToCS II felt like it dragged in some parts, but overall it was still a very solid experience - the lingering memories it leaves you with, the what ifs and could have beens for me was on par with P4G. The initial run on Normal mode took me about 64.5 hours, so I'll be going in for the platinum run now - hopefully I can do it in around 20 by skipping dialogue and inane side quests that don't need doing.

Just looking at my play list this year, it was very Falcom oriented 5 (6 if you count YS I/II as separate games). I am super excited that Ys Origins is going to be coming to the Vita. I've almost pulled the trigger on it a couple times, but glad I waited. Waiting in the wings for after I get the platinum trophy - Lara Croft Go, Assassin's Creed Chronicles, Darkest Dungeon - but not necessarily in that order.

Ugh, I just want more Trails games. I am left feeling satisfied, but also wanting more. I suppose it's a good thing.

Edit: Couldn't sleep, so I figured I'd go ahead and try and platinum Cold Steel II. Success!

Total game time was 75:24, which is considerably less than CS I. Really happy they didn't have another 100 hour trophy. It's amazing to think of all the time I've spent playing the LoH series on Vita. I forget how many hours it was to complete Trails in the Sky FC/SC (well over 120) plus another 175 for Cold Steel...That puts it at a cool 295-300 hours between the four games. Yet, I am left wanting more...

On to Lara Croft Go next as a palate cleanser.

There are also a couple spin offs:
Suikoden Tactics (ties in directly with Suiko 4, decent enough tactical RPG, if a bit on the easy side).
Suikogaiden - featuring Nash. I think there were two of these games, one of which was fan-translated.
Suikoden Tierkries - For the DS. Never did play this as I didn't want alt. dimension Suikoden.
Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki - PSP game that never made it stateside.

Suikoden and tactics games make so much sense, it's somewhat surprising they only released the one game in the tactics vein.

Just listened to the confessional episode, great stuff. Always fun to see what other people have missed that others consider essential.

Re: Suikoden II

Not absolutely necessary that you play the first one, it helps but despite loving the series I always felt Suiko I felt like an archaic game. The major Suiko fan in me says play it, but the pragmatist in me says skip it, unless you are a completionist. The stories are mostly focused on the region of the world they take place in (think Trails in the Sky/Trails of Cold Steel) and are self contained aside from character back story or major events - of which there is a lot cross over in 1-3.

I played the games out of order back in the day 2/3/1 and never really felt I missed too much.

There are 3 different combat systems, your everyday RPG turnbased combat, one vs one fights between characters which use a rock/paper/scissors type system, and the field tactical battles which is sort of like Fire Emblem as you guys mentioned.

A lot of people hate Suikoden 4 (I mean a lot) due to it's plodding nature and sparse environments but I felt the story was compelling enough. 5 is an attempt to re-capture the glory of 2.

Finished up Ys II today, that last fight was a serious let down - it's way too easy and a huge difference in difficulty compared to Dark Fact IMO. Ys I took about 3.5 hours, and Ys II was just a tad under 7, short, but a very nice palate cleanser which I needed. Bump system was much improved in Ys II, and made it feel so much more fluid.

Not sure what I'll delve into next, I have a feeling it might be Cold Steel II.

IMO Graces f has probably the best Tales combat system - going to Xillia was such a downturn in the fluidity and speed that Graces had to offer. It felt so clunky to me, I seriously considered not playing it, and only beat it seeing Milia's side of the story. Vesperia was also really good, but that could be because I hadn't played a Tales game to that point since Tales of Destiny 2 on the PSX.

Tales of Hearts Rebirth felt like there wasn't enough variety? I started it a couple years ago when it released, and got a decent amount in but there really wasn't a whole lot to keep me invested. I will go back someday and beat it, but the combat in that one too falls short of what Graces has to offer. Kind of expected more, but it's fine, I just have more interesting games to play.

Wrapped up Ys I earlier today, took about 4 hours or so. That level 10 cap is so easy to hit. Immediately started playing Ys II right after, and it's wildly different than the Ys II I'm familiar with. A lot of it seems foreign, but that is to be expected with the way Ys II Special was done back in the day. I have these memories of Ys II, and they just don't match up with what I'm playing, jarring to say the least, but it also makes for a new experience.

Combat is also much improved in Ys II as everything just feels faster.

Needed a palate cleanser, and what better than to play some Ys?

Started playing through Ys I last night, and am having a ton of fun with it, it's just what I needed. Music is great and the game moves fast.

Finally beat FFX-2 after taking a month hiatus from gaming. Went into it with the plans to platinum it, but life got in the way and so I just ended up beating it rather than combing through it with a fine tooth comb. I had every intention of doing the last mission etc but again, life has priorities and unfortunately this is low on the list.

I have DQ7 sitting in the wings at about 8 hours, but more than anything I'm just really glad to be done the FFX series of games. It still doesn't change my opinion of X, but it still reinforces that X-2 was, and still is fun.

These last few days I've had a hankering to play something by Falcom, but I'm not sure if I want to invest all those hours just yet into Cold Steel 2 as it is a serious time investment...I guess the coming days will decide what I want to play - though I am happy that I've been able to average about a game a month this year - if I don't beat anything else. I've also kind of been wanting to play Danganronpa Ultra Despair Girls, but I missed out on the sale, and I am loathe to spend more money on games especially when I've so many that need to be played.

Started listening to the Falcom episode and it's making me want to get another Falcom fix. I have Cold Steel II waiting in the wings, but lately I've been down on games and have been taking a bit of a break.

Listening to all this Ys talk makes me want to play Ys I/II again.
