Game Journals / Re: Retro Encounter Podcast Thread

So playing through Valkyria Chronicles I have some thoughts I wanted to get down before I forgot them all.

First of all, what do you think about the attention to sound detail that this game brings and whether or not it stands out to you at all. I'm referring specifically to the scene in chapter 7 when they're in the ruins and their voices are echoing off the walls. I am so sure that this happens in other games but for the life of me I just cannot remember noticing it.

Secondly, why is the game called Valkyria Chronicles but in the game (steam version) it's spelled Valkyrur or whatever whenever they refer to it?

Why do you think Faldio isn't a playable character? Typically when they have NPCs in games like this they distance them in a way where it makes sense that they aren't part of your squad; they either have severe personality problems, are of a significant age gap, or do something entirely different from your party. But this guy shows up in every single chapter, is your former classmate and also serves in the army just like you do. Maybe there are plans for him further down the road but for now it seems rather strange that he's just always hanging around your squad instead of his own no?

Lastly, the Lion's Paw shows up again and again like bad symbolism in high school literature. Any predictions of any particular significance regarding the plant or is it actually just going to "bring the townspeople back"?

Don't know if I posted these before your recording session but happy hunting.

How far in the game did you guys go for the first episode of Valkyria Chronicles? I've been meaning to pick up that game again and would like to go at a steady pace but still finish at roughly the same time the last episode comes out.

It was a variety of issues.  Whenever I opened a crate/chest or changed targets in combat, my character couldn't move or perform actions that required re-targeting.  I could solve it by saving and resetting, but that was REALLY annoying to do multiple times each combat and with every loot.  I tried to resolve it using VSynch and a few other things recommended on the Steam forums, but never got it working.  Ended up giving up.

Damn can't help you there. The only problem I ever had was some texture problems where lines would appear in the skies which I promptly fixed by turning off grass. Oh well. Onto the other million rpgs out there.

Kotor and Kotor 2 are available on steam. They were on sale for ~ $3.5 earlier because of the movies but they're normally around 10.99. Obviously, since they are on steam they will auto-synch to your computer and run fine. I was playing it until my house was broken into and my laptop broken.
I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but there are a lot of problems with the Steam version of KOTOR 1.  My computer can't play it because it has a 2011-era video card.

What kind of problems? Does it crash or is it texture problems?

Trails in the Sky would literally be the best game ever if we were thirteen year olds on summer break.

Is the cast going to do anything special for pokemon? Are any of you familiar with Nuzlocke challenges?

I have a (pseudo) question! Why didn't the crew pick up Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic to play seeing as how The Force Awakens is coming out within the week? Then you could have played KotoR2 next year when Rogue One comes out.

Good episode! Talked about a lot of my favourite series (fallout, fire emblem, witcher, phoenix). All I can say about FE is that if you don't grow up playing it and adapting to its mechanics and dive in with previous expectations from other series you just end up dissapointed. You either can't save everyone because it's war or you become the brilliant strategist and don't even give the AI the 1% to kill the character you covet. It's all about proper positioning and formations. Also, play on Hard and DON'T GRIND.

Any news as to what the next game will be? Did I miss it during 4-3?

Couldn't you just plug in a USB gamepad like a non-heathen?

When I spend an excess of 200 something dollars on my keyboard and mouse I'm not going to buy a gamepad. Besides, the game I play the most is Dota 2 anyways (for the last 12 years).

Holy. So this game came out on PC over steam. I pre-ordered it because it was 10% off and came with a couple Dota 2 items (my main game).

Boot up the game and I cannot move the camera. I literally cannot move the camera. There are only two keyboard settings for the game: Type A or Type B. The only difference between the two of these is that the WASD or 4568 moves the character/camera depending on which one you choose. I use a Blackwidow TE keyboard THAT DOES NOT HAVE A NUMPAD. You cannot rebind the camera keys to anything else. I cannot comprehend how SE did not think that this could be an issue.

Easily Fire Emblem if you play it right. There are many ways to play these games wrong. DO NOT GRIND.

"Poland's finest hour."

I dunno, man. Vader.

Also WWII.

Expansion DLC is out! 25 bucks for the next two expansion dlcs measured at roughly 30 hours of play time. I insta-bought it so hard.

Edit: I noticed that the price point is 25 globally. Meaning people in Europe are paying a hella lot more than Canadians are. The euro equivalent of 25 dollars Canadian is roughly 17.5 euros. You would think that CD Projekt RED would be more conscientious of that being a developer situated in Poland and all.

Really considering getting on the game or the anime at some point with all the rave reviews everywhere....
You really should Steins;Gate is a great game. You can't go wrong with either the anime or the game. If you are only going to one or the other, I would recommend the game. The anime is an excellent adaptation which covers everything important from the game. However the anime does cut some stuff (most of which is minor) for time and doesn't really add anything of significance to replace it except for the final episode that serves as an epilogue. The game however has alternate endings, which I find to add an interesting level of "what if" to how events could have played out. The PS3 and Vita versions are both coming out in English next month, so maybe pick it up then.

Watching the anime saves a lot of time though.
