Multiplayer RPGs / ARPGs (Diablo and the like)
« on: October 14, 2017, 02:02:14 AM »
Hey everyone,

The past couple of years I've strayed away from my love of JRPGs and have gotten into ARPGs. I only recently got a PC for gaming ( always been on consoles previously). Started with Diablo 3. I've also played a lot of Torchlight 2, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Marvel Heroes, and went back a bit to play Diablo 2.

I think a lot of my reasons for the shift in genres has to do with having a busier schedule with more responsibilities. I don't feel like I have to emerse myself as much in a hack n' slash ARPG, and they're easy to jump in and out of without having to remember some complicated mechanic.

Anybody else consider these types of games to be their favorite genre of RPG? Looking to hear from fellow fans, and maybe meet some friends to game with.

What do you love about the genre? Favorite games? Reasons?

Thanks all.

This is always a series I've wanted to get into. I just got PlayStation Now and there are a couple of titles on the service. Is there a particular game I should (or need to) start with to get a good introduction into what these games are all about?

I have 14 vacation days to take before years end or I lose them so that'll give be adequate time to put game hours in. It is probably a tall talk though. My main goal is to get through both Cold Steel games. I'm hoping to buy a Vita for Xmas so that'll help and give me more opportunity to grind out levels on the go.

Those are fair points. I think I really just enjoyed it so much because it felt like it was a throwback game to the really FF games. Completely different from FF8, which I thoroughly disliked.

Now I want to go back and replay IX again. So underrated. Probably tied for my 3rd favorite FF game with VII, and behind IV and VI.

I'm taking this winter to catch up on years of backlog. All the games I missed at the time that I waved to play bit didn't have the chance. I'm starting with Trails of Cold Steel I and II. Enjoying it so far. Also playing Fire Emblem awakening on 3DS during work breaks. Then I'm going to hit FFX HD remaster, Ni Nu Kuni, and Persona 4. Hope I can get through them all before best years release of Persona 5 and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Ok so Vandal Hearts and FF Tactics (not the advanced version haha) seem to be safe bets. I'll give them a try. Thanks for the feedback.

Single-Player RPGs / SRPGs for a Newbie

Hello all,

So I have always been a fan of JRPGs since Final Fantasy VII. I also love Kingdom Hearts, Tales series, and Pokemon. The past few years I have basically been playing more Western RPGs mainly from Bethesda and Bioware.

So all this time spent playing games, but I have never picked up and played a strategy or tactics RPG. I have heard the many praises of FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, and Disgaea. I really want to give this genre a shot so I can see if I enjoy it or not. The problem is I feel a bit intimidated by the genre which is probably why I've never played one.

So my question is, what is a good SRPG for a newbie. Something perhaps with an extensive tutorial. A game that defines the genre well, and is inviting for a new player. I have a PS Now subscription and was contemplating Disgaea 3 or 4, but I wanted to hear opinions from experienced gamers. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks everyone.

I am playing alot of Overwatch, Division, and Destiny on PS4. I am not a hardcore player, I tend to stick to single player games, but looking for some friends. PSN ID: TurnerbasedXP

Chrono Trigger for DS is a great one. Simple enough. My first RPG as a kid was Mario RPG. If they can't deal with the look of the game the Mario and Luigi games for DS are really well done. I loved Browser's Inside Story.

Yes, my top 3 RPGs are the first three I played. When I was younger I didn't understand what an RPG was exactly. My first experience was Super Mario RPG. I absolutely love that game. However, I didn't pick up another RPG until Final Fantasy VII, and next came Ocarina of Time which is still my all time favorite. So I was very lucky with my first RPG experiences. I have been hooked ever since. Over since gone back and played some of the classics I missed the first time around.

First Five:
1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
2. Final Fantasy 7
3. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Legend of Legaia
5. Wild ARMs

Top 5:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Mario RPG
3. Final Fantasy 7
4. Paper Mario and the 1000 Year Door
5. Pokemon Red/Blue
