OK, so I'm designing a small game right now and one thing I'm struggling with at the moment is "should I give the different races bonuses based on their uniqueness?".

I feel like I can see two major points of view and I've been going over it a lot in my head and I can see good arguments for both.
A general poll here with you guys would help me see what others think about it.

I'd like to know what your preference is between these when considering going through a character creation (think Skyrim if you will):
A) I like to play a race because of how it looks and like that the stats tie into it.
B) I like to play a race because of how it looks and like that stats do not have to factor in my decision which is purely esthetic.
C) I care more about the stats than the appearance and will chose any race as long as the stat bonus interest me.
D) I care more about stats than the appearance but will try and fine something which at least does not appall me even should I not choose what I think would be the best bonuses.

The Helper Monkey / Dealing with mother who expressed suicidal thoughts
« on: October 27, 2017, 06:02:04 PM »
I have zero knowledge about depression and/or suicide but I am forced to deal with a situation involving both and as such, I'd like whatever advice any of you may offer.

My mother who has terminal cancer has finally reached the point of acceptance about a week ago and it seems it's sending her into a depression. There're a couple of other bad news that have flown her way too which seem to have pushed her to the edge.

Today she expressed suicidal thoughts while talking with one of her friend over the phone. Said friend called me immediately after to warn me.
I managed to have her accompanied most of the day by my uncle to watch over her today.
She lives about 2.5 hours away from me so I cannot be very present. My uncle thankfully is about 20 minutes away.

I'll be going to see her over the weekend too to assess and assist.

I'm not sure what it is that I should or can do.
As I see it, there are 3 options available to me:

#1 She is being followed by a nurse and a social worker who specialize in terminal cancers. She meets them often and they are supposed to deal with physical and mental issues. Option #1 would be to trust in the system and let the professionals handle it.

#2 Her friend called a suicide hotline for tips and gave me a rundown of things we could do to help her. Things like helping her find motivation and helping her deal with her fears which are weighting her down. This would mean me steering her somewhere better without touching the subject and pretty much pretending I do not know about it. Problem is, my mom is perceptive and if she picks up on it, I really don't know how it could go about.

#3 Talk to her about it and confront her (this seems like a terrible idea)

Any input or advice would be welcomed.

Single-Player RPGs / Tales of Symphonia (post Gamecube)
« on: April 17, 2017, 01:00:08 PM »
What are you opinions on ToS for those that played it later than when it was only available on Gamecube?

I know that back in the Gamecube era, people were really positive on the game.
That said, people playing it now are mostly disappointed with it.

For those that played it later, what was your opinion on it?

For myself, I bought the HD edition (and got the Steam version with the Zesty pre-order), which I started playing but ended up dropping it.
My general opinion was that the gameplay felt like a bad Vesperia.

Story wise, I quickly came to despise Colette and I don't understand the whole human farm / elf thing which the game seems to forget about right after the very beginning (although I didn't finish it, so maybe it comes back?)

RPGFan: Forums / 'Likes' taking a long time to load

I'm not sure if it's just me or everyone, but the pages of the site seem to load slowly because of 'likes' which take a while to appear.

I had to try 3 times before being able to make this too.

The Helper Monkey / Tales of Zesty Clear save?
« on: August 13, 2016, 11:43:27 AM »
I want to try Zesty again (kinda dropped it a long time ago...)

Would anyone here have a PC/Steam clear save data so that I can start as NG+ with some grade fluff to ease the playthrough?

I don't really mind how much grade is on the save since it should be easy to memory edit any amount in anyway.

Am I really the only one playing this game on an RPG forum?

Website keeps going up and down due to traffic so it's better to use the Twitter for those wondering what the hell I'm talking about

General Discussions / The Best and the Worst endings
« on: April 26, 2016, 02:55:52 PM »
I don't know if some of you are like me, but if an ending is good, I'll remember the thing fondly while if the ending is terrible, I'll be sour about the whole even if everything before the ending was good.
What are some of the best and worst endings you recall ? Can be from anything: books, comic books, movies, games, TV series, anime, manga, even songs! you name it.

Given the nature of this thread: Please use BLACK COLORED TEXT for the ending so that people aren't spoiled too badly (the code thing works too, but it's annoying on long texts I find)

The good:

Code 'muthaeffing' Geass
That ending... oh god, that ending! It just can't be described in words (that or I'm illiterate).

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Another amazing ending. One of the most entertaining last boss fight (I mean, how often do good guys and villains fight it off with the entire cosmos as their battleground?) followed by just enough of a conclusion for each of the characters. With the last moment being a nice message of hope.
There's a lot to learn from here for others.

Being reborn as a bird and flying over the world to see all that you have done and saved was so beautiful. Finding Elle at the very end just turned on the waterworks for me.

The Last Samurai
The last charge against the guns and cannons is so beautiful in itself as it is emotionally charged. The music, choreography and acting are all top notch and it creates what I can only describe as art.
I mean, you know they are going to lose horribly, but there's all these slight moments that make you think maybe, just maybe they'll pull it off but nope... they all die (well, almost all).
To me, this is the movie out of Tom Cruise's entire career where he shined the most.

The ugly:

Love Live! The School Idol Movie
I just can't understand how you would take something that's as popular as Love Live, make a movie about it that is terrible and then have the ending be «we're all splitting up and Muze is dead»
Like... did you guys just kill your cash cow? Why would you do that? Are you thinking of making some kind of Cinderella Girl spinoff like IdolMaster? Because IdolMaster didn't kill their original cast for that and both are profitable.
I'm pretty sure anyone who wants to keep being a fan of Love Live will forever deny the existence of this movie.

The first season was incredible and had that amazing WTF ending. Season 2 starts off really slow but they are slowly building the tension and you think you are going to get the best denouement ever but actually, all you get is the bad guy surrendering without any fighting and then going to jail... and that's it. No epic fight. Just the bad guy giving up while in possession of the most OP mecha ever.

Final Fantasy X-2
The 100% ending is so bad, I would recommend everyone to not 100% the game and take the normal ending as the real ending. The 100% ending undoing FFX's ending is a complete travesty.

The Dark Knight
I went to see the movie at the theater and the boat scene is so bad, it's the closest I've ever been to walking out of a movie. You'd think with the movie being so damn long already that the scene would be quick, but no, it gets dragged for an eternity of pure insanity. The choice isn't even interesting and anyhow Batman's solution isn't even worth the length of it all.

There are others, but those are the ones that I can think of at the moment.
Have at it!

The Soundroom / Gaming Ringtones
« on: February 16, 2016, 02:54:12 PM »
Who has them?
Who wants to share them?

FF7 Battle (same as below)

FFX Battle (This one is a little project I did. It's basically the FFX Battle Theme that I ran through some old ass audio drivers to destroy it then I reconstructed it)
(with intro)

Mega Man 3

Zero Wing

Ys2 - Intro (warning, may not pick up calls)

The Helper Monkey / Song I know I heard somewhere else (SRW K)
« on: September 25, 2015, 04:02:54 PM »
I imagine some of you remember the whole thing with Super Robot Wars K having music pretty much stolen from Lufia and Chrono Trigger.
The thing is, there's a track in that game that sounds like something I'm sure I've heard before but I just can't pinpoint it.

I've been wondering for a long time where, but I'm sure I've heard this (or something very close to it) before.

Help me end this personal madness.

RPGFan: Site / Article: Fallout 4 Contending for RPG Throne
« on: September 01, 2015, 02:05:51 PM »
Forgot a <

Coming this November, Skyrim's achievements may be put to the test when Fallout 4 hits shelves early this fall. Bethesda's VP of PR and marketing, Peter Hines, has stated that even he cannot describe how massive the new world within span class="game">Fallout 4 will be, or how well the game will do. He does believe in its potential to top the well-known giant though.

With the older games having one or sometimes even 2 remakes/ports, the introduction of the grade shop mid-series or even the dual protagonist system of Xillia, which "Tales of" games have managed to grasp your enjoyment to such a high degree that you wanted to play them more than once?

The list:
  • Tales of Phantasia
  • Tales of Destiny (DC)
  • Tales of Eternia
  • Tales of Destiny 2
  • Tales of Symphonia (Chronicles)
  • Tales of Rebirth
  • Tales of Legendia
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Tales of Innocence
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Tales of Hearts (R)
  • Tales of Graces (F)
  • Tales of Xillia
  • Tales of Xillia 2

My list of games played more than once:
  • Tales of Phantasia
  • Tales of Eternia
  • Tales of Xillia

Addendum: I want to replay Vesperia so damn bad, but I'm waiting for the better version. Same for Destiny.

I'd probably replay Graces F if the story wasn't so boring and the dungeons less of a pain in the ass.

The Helper Monkey / Good MIDI editor?

I'm looking for a good MIDI editor.
I can read sheet music so I'm fine with any software that would have that interface.

The Helper Monkey / Anyone played IDOLM@STER ONE FOR ALL ?
« on: May 23, 2015, 11:54:33 AM »
I'm pretty interested in getting IDOLM@STER ONE FOR ALL but I have one burning question about the game that's making me hesitate.
Does the game still have those "quick, choose something between these answers and we're leaving you almost no time" ?

My reading of Japanese is really slow and I know there's no way I could read those things and sadly, that would be enough to discourage me from the game.

General Discussions / Game that took you the longest time to finish
« on: April 30, 2015, 01:35:33 PM »
Ok, I'll clarify some baseline rules for this.

- Finish as in go from beginning to end, not 100% the game
- Dropped games which are started anew later don't count. Only lapse of one playthrough (continuous save file)

Mine is clearly The Legend of the Dragoon.

It took me a little over SEVEN YEARS to finish my game.

The game is such a slug to play through that I would always lose interest in it and wait several months before forcing myself to play some more of it.
I'm still glad I finished it instead of dropping it.

I do think that the game would be incredible if it had better pacing.
Also, everything about Rose is gold. The best parts of the story were about the dragoons of old.
