Multiplayer RPGs / Lost Reavers
« on: May 10, 2016, 03:55:08 AM »
Anyone playing this?  It's a free to play Wii-U game.  The reviews have said the game is crappy but intriguing, but I am absolutely loving it.  It's basically a co-op action RPG, but there's something special about it.

Trying to articulate its merits is difficult because every aspect is so simple on its own, and is certainly why reviews are so brutal, but this game is greater than the sum of its parts.

Imagine Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, Phantasy Star Online, Dark Souls, and some sort of roguelike Resident Evil survival elements with regard to consumable items, and you're getting close to what the gameplay experience is like.  I wanna focus on the gameplay experience, because the shooting gameplay isn't tight like a dedicated shooter, the RPG elements aren't new, nor are any other individual elements great on their own, but when it all comes together, something fresh emerges.

I can see how people would think it's unbalanced or unfair at the start, but this game is not broken like so many reviewers have said.  I would compare it to souls games in that regard.

I've said a whole lot of nothing, but give it a shot if you have a WiiU.  It's free, and is perfect for when you need a breather from Dark Souls 3.

Multiplayer RPGs / Freedom Wars is a video game
« on: November 01, 2014, 12:30:59 PM »
I joined the Helsinki, Finland panopticon.  Oops, first-

This game is fun, and deep.  It is clearly inspired by Attack of Titan, but we are talking about video games here.

Whatever, add Mojotron on PSN, and in game I'm Black "The Twin" Star.

Thumbs up from a typically cult gamer (me).

General Games / Armored Core: Verdict Day after PSN sale?

Anyone get this for $5?

I bought it full price at release and always regretted not having time to dive in and be all hardcore while the community/buzz was fresh, and this has been a second chance for me.

I've talked two buddies into playing it a little bit and since you can co-op the entire story questline, we've had fun.  Only I seem to be completely smitten by the sheer depth of absolutely everything, though.

Join my team if you want to play with me/us, "Black Star Nursery" is our team name.  PSN name is Mojotron.  I have a mic and a keyboard, whichever you're most comfy with.  I will help anyone who is curious and/or afraid the learning curve is too high.

This is what I'm working with:

General Discussions / Troy Davis case
« on: September 21, 2011, 08:17:35 PM »
Google news has these two stories, and I don't know what it all means...

Firstly, Troy Davis' execution was delayed.

On the same front page (of google news) was a story about a white supremacist that actually was executed today.

The news is moving too fast for me.   By the time I realized that a white supremacist was killed, this article was already up.

Fuck.  What are they trying to do?  Fucking Illuminati :P

Davis was not the only U.S. inmate scheduled to die Wednesday evening. In Texas, white supremacist gang member Lawrence Russell Brewer was headed to the death chamber for the 1998 dragging death of a black man, James Byrd Jr., one of the most notorious hate crime murders in recent U.S. history.

Being responsible for the dragging death of anyone is worse than shooting someone, regardless of race.

Great ideas here.  Shame no one thought of this for Wii Fit or 3DS augmented reality... I guess the GPS is crucial though.

Multiplayer RPGs / Rusty Hearts!
« on: August 25, 2011, 07:16:46 PM »

I, for some reason, didn't play this game during closed beta 1, though I did redeem one of the 2000 beta keys RPGFan so kindly passed out.  Turns out you're still good to go for closed beta 2, which started today!

This game has a cool art style, and runs extremely well with the bells and whistles turned off.  It plays like Devil May Cry, with the MMO format of Dungeon Fighter Online or Mabinogi.  (these are good things)

My character name is Renze, and I have chosen Frantz, because a buddy of mine went with Tude.  Angela has big tits, if you're into that (yes).

I'm going to play some more now, and see if I can't describe this game in terms of other games some more.
It's Dungeon Fighter.  Is Nexon a developer, or just a publisher?  I'd ask if Rusty Hearts was from the same developer as Dungeon Fighter if Nexon is only a publisher.
Perfect World created this game.  Perfect World is a company claiming to promote Chinese qualities in its games.  WTF.  If Dungeon Fighter is South Korean, and North Korea has ties to China, there is a link between China and South Korea... but wtf, that can't be right.

There's no NDA by the way.

Single-Player RPGs / Devil Survivor Overclocked

I am like 10 minutes into the initial conversations of this game, and it's awesome.   I've never played the original version, so I am excited.

Everyone else has probably played this already, or is playing Deus Ex or Xenoblade.  Woe.

Single-Player RPGs / Chantelise demo
« on: July 28, 2011, 09:19:02 PM »
I played through the Chantelise demo... loved it.  I had heard that the original release was mediocre, but I thought the gameplay was oldschool in a good way.  Pattern recognition and some twitch reflexes required.

Besides that, Carpe Fulgur is building a legacy... it's like playing Recettear except you're primarily the adventurer this time.  The same items are in this game, and selling loot is the main way to develop your character.  And of course, the hilarious yet valid writing is there.

I'ma buy this.

This is probably the one...

My comments on Lucent Heart merely pointed at an emerging trend: auto-pilot quest seeking.

Who wants to get freaky?

I'm gonna make SO much love.

So the game isn't nearly as love oriented as it is being marketed.  What it is, though, is a fun and easy KWoW (Korean style World of Warcraft).  The quest tracker has a button for "find NPC" or "find monster" depending on if your objective is to turn an item or kill X monsters... pushing the button will automatically walk your character to the location.  This is actually a really nice feature, really convenient.  It frees you up to chat while you are traveling for one thing, but personally, I love the lazy convenience of it.

Servers have been up for only 2 days, so it's spankin' new.  Skills are zodiac themed, in case you're into that.

Multiplayer RPGs / ARGO hybrid MMORPG

I clicked an interesting ad, and stumbled upon this:

It looks incredible.  I'm downloading it now to find out if it is any good.  Apparently the majority of the player base is German, although this is the international version, and there are English speaking players.  I don't care, it looks awesome.

It is beautiful, and polished.  I spent almost 2 hours doing the training quests with a German guy, so for all I know, the game could turn into a strictly PVP affair from here on, but damn, it runs well, looks good... leaps and bounds ahead of standard Korean fare.  (I say 'standard' Korean fare to be fair to the rest of Korean games, not to imply that this is an example of superior Korean fare.  This is something else entirely)

The presentation is way up high.  If you are into free online games, this one has high production values, to say the least.

Multiplayer RPGs / Hunted: The Demon's Forge

Anyone buying this tomorrow?  I am.  I don't like cover shooters, but if the game delivers on its other promises (of being an RPG) it should be really good.

I'll be on PSN of course, and while I'm not sure how co-op will work (will one player bring one of their characters into your world, or do you have to play as one of the host's characters?) I wouldn't mind co-opping with someone, as my personal friends fail me on most levels.

Where's the Bethesda jizz at, it's a Bethesda game.

The Helper Monkey / LCD HDTV Resolution question
« on: May 29, 2011, 10:49:05 PM »
Unless I'm mistaken, the Xbox 360 outputs 720p as 1280x 720 pixels.  My TV's native resolution is 1360x768, and is considered 720p.

If I order HD cable from the cable company, am I getting 1280x720, or 1360x768?  I probably wouldn't notice the upscale, but when did this happen?

I read something about 1360x768 being a better multiple of 256, for people who use HDTV's as their computer monitor... but that makes 720p more of a 'range' than a hard statistic.

Most people have 720p televisions I'd wager, but would that mean 1280x720, or 1360x768?
