The Helper Monkey / Shadow Hearts question
« on: August 01, 2015, 02:44:16 AM »
I own all three Shadow Hearts games, but haven't made it past the 4-hour mark in any of them (or even the 0-hour mark in From the New World).  I'm not the most fiscally responsible guy when it comes to video games.  I plan on getting into at least one of them later this year.  My question is: do I really need to play the first one?  I remember the second one made a lot of gameplay improvements, and most Shadow Hearts fans say Covenant is the best one in the series.  So is it okay to skip over the first one and jump into Covenant, or will I miss out on major story payoffs if I do that?

Single-Player RPGs / Recommend me a farming / homestead sim
« on: November 27, 2014, 12:34:24 AM »
I (obviously) enjoy RPGs, but I have never played a Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, or Rune Factory game.  Ever.  Let alone newer games like Tomodachi Life or Fantasy Life.  The closest I've come is messing around with the first The Sims game well over a decade ago.

So that's my starting point - almost zero - but I'm definitely curious.  So if you (i.e. people that have actually played a few of these) were to recommend me one game to dive into that genre, what would it be?  It would have to be playable on GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii, PS2, PS3, or PSP.  I don't care about playing games strictly in order if the newer ones are meaningfully better.  Recommend one that's good, and maybe more well-suited to beginners.  Any commentary on potential games for me to try is appreciated.

The Bazaar / Monsoon Market - GBA, DS, PS2, and GameCube for sale
« on: April 25, 2014, 11:39:46 AM »
My best friend is getting married and I need some spending money for airfare and lodging... in Austria.  I'd like to go to her wedding and pay my bills for May and June without one compromising the other.  As such, I'm going to try and sell some GBA and DS games.

*ALL* games will come with a protective plastic case, but only SOME of them have manuals and boxes. If it doesn't say anything on the listing, it's a plastic clasping case only.  All games are used, but are tested and functional.  All games are the English-language, USA NTSC versions.  I've never sold anything on RPGFan before, but I've bought a few things from veterans Dice and Klyde Chroma, so my contact info is out there.

I'd be shipping everything from Virginia on the USA's east coast.  If the shipping fee is over $2 or $3 then I'm going to need to ask for more than the listed price to compensate for shipping.  If you're interested in anything I'm listing here please send a PM and post here that you have done so.  I hope there's something here you might like!

PRICES - I'll take the best offer available, but if it's too low then I'm going to decline.  Sorry.

Gamecube (black) with 1 controller and 1 memory card - $35 + shipping
Super Smash Bros. Melee - $25
Pokemon Colosseum - $25
Ikaruga - $25
DK bongos, Donkey Konga, and Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat: $15 + shipping

If you want to buy the GC and more than one game, I will be very amenable to discounts. The games have boxes and manuals, except for Colosseum, which lacks a manual.

GBA Games

The Legend of Zelda (classic NES series) - $6
Sword of Mana - $6
Final Fantasy I+II: Dawn of Souls - $8
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - $8

DS Games

Scribblenauts - $8
Metal Slug 7 - $8
Golden Sun: The Lost Age - $8
Mega Man ZX - $8

PS2 Games

($10 games)
Shadow of the Colossus
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Odin Sphere
La Pucelle: Tactics

($5 games)
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked
Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak 2
Jak 3
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves
God of War
God of War II
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry 2
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition
Tomb Raider: Legend

Most of my PS2 games have boxes and manuals, but not all of them.  I'll check all games that you make inquiries about and respond with the important info.  All games are used, but in good condition and are 100% playable.  I'm selling these for very cheap, so I'll probably ask for additional charges for shipping.  Sorry.

Also, I found several boxes containing game boxes and game cases.  I have almost all of my DS, GBA, and PS2 game stuff located.  Huzzah!

I may be adding to this list over the next few weeks.  Happy shopping!

General Discussions / Completion List 2014
« on: January 19, 2014, 10:04:35 AM »
Because hey, it's been a new year for a few weeks now.  Check this out:

1. Ys Seven
2. Rayman Origins

General Games / Favorite Game Genre BESIDES RPGs
« on: November 01, 2013, 02:24:56 PM »
Title says it all.  If this is a repeat topic then feel free to redirect / combine / delete.

For me it's a tough choice between fighting games, platformers, and action/adventure games, but ultimately I have to go with platformers.  Games where you control running and jumping cartoon characters are about as video-gamey as you can get.  Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Rayman, Ratchet, Jak, Sly, Meat Boy, you name it.  I love me some platformers.

Single-Player RPGs / RPGFan's Top 20 PSP Games
« on: October 18, 2013, 09:09:36 AM »
I was pleasantly surprised to see this list pop up, as the PSP is by far my most-played console of the past 6 or 7 years.  Here are my thoughts on RPGFan's list:

Spots 16-20: no real arguments here, I guess.  I played four of these and they were all at least pretty good.  Love Jeanne D'Arc.  XML2 is the best of the XML/MUA quartet.  Second Evolution is a decent remake of a good game.  Silver Star Harmony is an excellent remake of a good game.  WAXF looks neat.

Spots 11-15: I dunno if Ys Chronicles belongs here.  The gameplay is so unsophisticated (insert your own dry-humping, lawn-mowing, or sumo-wrestling joke here) that playing through it is a chore at times.  I'd rather play a fun game than have a history lesson, especially when the Ys series is already well-represented on the list.  I haven't played ZHP, but I love HMH and Disgaea 2.  FF4 sure is FF4.

Spots 6-10: Oath in Felghana is amazing; I haven't played Ys Seven but it looks fantastic; and VP: Lenneth is a hell of a remake.  Totally cool with those.  I haven't played Birth By Sleep, but... sure.  I'm not really a KH guy but I'll believe you guys if you say it's pretty good.  But really, Riviera?  People like that game?  And you're praising the gimped adventure game interface?  I wouldn't have put Riviera on any top 20, let alone the top 10.

Spots 1-5: If I was making my own list of top 5 PSP RPGs, it would have four of these.  I haven't played Tactics Ogre yet, but it looks stellar and now I want to play it that much more.  Strong top 5, and a good glimpse of how excellent the selection of RPGs is on the PSP, even if it's a lot of remakes.

(Seriously, 8 of the top 10 and 14 of the top 20 were remakes. This isn't a complaint but an observation. If I made a similar list the distribution would probably be the same or very similar)

Omissions: Valkyria Chronicles II.  It's not as good as the spectacular PS3 VC, but it's a very good strategy RPG with great visual design that does a lot of cool little things.  If I made such a list it would be in the top 8 to 12 somewhere.  I'd also add Disgaea 1, Tales of Eternia, and Breath of Fire III to the set of "good PSP remakes." I think any of them would have been better choices for the list than Riviera or Ys Chronicles, Afternoon of Darkness in particular.  I'm not sure if it's an RPG, but Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is a phenomenon that is worth a mention on any list of PSP games (I identify it as an online action RPG and would put it in the top 20, but I understand if someone might disagree).

TL;DR online lists of **** are a little silly and haters might call them journalistically lazy, but they're easy reads, interesting to discuss, and look good on a front page.  This was a very solid online list.  Good on you guys and gals.

(If this is the wrong place for this topic then please go ahead and move it. Thanks in advance!)

Single-Player RPGs / Cosmic Star Heroine - a Zeboyd Games joint
« on: October 01, 2013, 01:20:45 PM »
Robert Boyd and Bill Stiernberg are up to their old tricks again.  Here's the KickStarter page for their new game, Cosmic Star Heroine.  It's a science-fiction RPG with a spy theme that draws inspiration from Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star IV, and Lunar 2 from a team with four successful indie RPGs under its belt.  Check out the video on the KS page for more details!  Coming out in late 2014 for PC, Mac, PS4, and Vita.

General Games / CAPtivate is going on right now
« on: April 04, 2012, 03:55:08 PM »
...but there's a media embargo until next week. Last year Capcom used their special expo to reveal Dragon's Dogma and a few other items; the year before that, everyone freaked out over Marvel vs. Capcom 3. So what's it gonna be this time?

My hope is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd G... in both Japan and the United States. I would get a Vita (mostly) just for that.

Single-Player RPGs / Why does BioWare hate blondes?
« on: March 16, 2012, 05:49:05 PM »
I know this is a weird topic and not exactly timely, but hear me out a minute.  (if this topic is against the rules or in poor taste then an admin or moderator can go ahead and delete it; it's just something that's been gnawing at me for some time now)

I've really enjoyed BioWare's recent run of console RPGs (Dragon Age 1+2, Mass Effect 1-3), but I have to ask: why are there no playable blonde women?  Here's a quick list of all the female party members in Dragon Age or Mass Effect (not counting temps or DLC): Ashley, Liara, Tali, Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne, Shale, Miranda, Jack, Samara, Morinth, Merrill, Isabela, Aveline, Bethany, and EDI.  By my count, that's seven women with dark hair, two redheads, one with white hair, four space aliens, and two sentient metallic beings.  No blondes.

Yes, I know I can get a blonde woman on my team if I make Shepard, Hawke, or the Warden one.  I'm also aware that Miranda was almost blonde, and I have to say I'm disappointed she ended up as another brunette.  Furthermore, if you look at female blonde NPCs for those five games, they mostly comprise of manipulative NPCs (Anora) and villains (Meredith).  The only blonde woman I could think of that might qualify as true ally is Kahlee Sanders.

Note: I haven't played Star Wars: The Old Republic or Sonic: The Dark Brotherhood, hence why I said "console RPGs."  They might have blondes, but I still think it's unusual that there are so few in the five games mentioned above.  I've played Jade Empire and it doesn't have any blondes, but, well, I think it's reasonable not to see any fair-haired men or women in a fictionalized medieval China.

Another note: I'm a dude in his middle 20s with dark hair.  I just like blondes.  Especially smart blondes.  I'm dating one.  I voted for a blonde FemShep in that big vote for the Mass Effect 3 cover last year twice (once for hairstyle, once for color), and was a bit puzzled at the outrage that resulted - why was everyone mad when there hadn't been a playable blonde character in a BioWare game in years?  Am I the only person that would like seeing more blondes in BioWare games? Single-Player RPGs / RPGMaker indie games
« on: March 16, 2012, 09:49:44 AM »
Does anyone here know much about the more popular RPGMaker indie series like Laxius Force, Aveyond, or Millenium? I've played several indie RPGs recently (Breath of Death VII, To the Moon, Recettear, Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, et al.) and would like to try others. The Aldorlea and Amaranth titles seem like a potentially strong trove of games I haven't tried. Anyone more knowledgeable than I willing to make a few recommendations?
