Howdy folks! As much as I hate shameless self promotion, sometimes it's a necessary evil, so I think now's as good a time as any to let you know about the video games podcast hosted by critic Alvin Chua and myself, MisanthroPlay.

We've done a few episodes devoted to in-depth examinations of games we loved, like the Assault Suits series and Metal Gear Solid V, but at the moment it's a bit more of a free-form discussion of what we've been playing, what's new, what's old and what else is making waves or flying under the radar in the games press. Our earlier episodes sound a little rough, but I think we've improved.

We're trying to keep to a bi-weekly release schedule at present. It should go without saying, but the content of these podcasts does not reflect the views of RPGFan or its staff.

I'll update this thread with new episodes as-and-when, which are currently scheduled for Fridays.

General Games / NaNoReNo 2016 - Make a visual novel in 5 weeks.

It's that special time of year. NaNoReNo is a month-long game jam to make a visual novel. It's named for Ren'Py, but you can use any engine you please. There's no prize, it's not competitive, it's just about creativity. This year it's running from March 1st to April 8th.

The sign-up page and guidelines can be found here. The forums are useful in forming teams or looking for help/to help!

2015's entries are here. And because I'm shameless, here's the game I wrote, JB Hairboll. I don't know if I'll be taking part this year; I'd sure like to but I'm very busy. I encourage all who are interested to do so, and I will be cheering you all on!

It's the season for spookings, so I thought I'd create this topic to talk about some of our favorite horror games. Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 are pretty high on my list, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to shine the spotlight on a little-known game called Hell Night.



Developed by Dennou Eizou and published by Atlus in Japan (as Dark Messiah) and Konami in Europe, Hell Night takes place during New Year's Eve and casts you as a hapless Tokyo commuter on your way home from a hard day at work. Rumors abound of a recent spate of kidnappings, and on your way to board the subway you find yourself chased by a group of doomsday cultists.

You manage to get away and catch the last train home, but as your train speeds through the tunnel there's a loud crash, the train shudders to a halt and the power goes out. Just as you start to wonder what's going on, you see a torn-off ear splatter against the window to the next car. Some sort of horrible unstoppable beast (clad in blue jeans) has made its way into the train, killing everything in its path.

You manage to escape into the sewers, linking up with a schoolgirl named Naomi as you both attempt to find your way home but end up descending deeper and deeper into "The Mesh", a derelict and disused underground replica of Tokyo that was intended to be used as an emergency bomb shelter, populated by outcasts and the homeless.

Hell Night could be considered to be a precursor to Amnesia; it takes place from a first-person perspective and you're largely defenseless, your only option to run away from the monster pursuing you. Having a partner grants you a unique ability-- psychic Naomi, for example, and can sometimes detect the monster on the map if it's close enough--but they also function as an "extra life" of sorts: get caught with a partner and the monster will immediately kill and feed on them, giving you a second chance to escape. Morbidly, the only way to pick up a new partner to pursue their story is to let the old one die.

The tension Hell Night presents still manages to be pretty terrifying even today, 16 years after its initial release. The real star, however is The Mesh itself. When you're not running away from your pursuer, you're interacting with its eccentric residents in adventure game style, sometimes doing them favors to get items, or sometimes just hearing the bizarre stories of how they ended up down there. Every character in this game is interesting, especially the more nefarious ones like sadistic serial killer Kyoji, one of your possible partners.

Hell Night starts to lose speed in the last quarter, when it abandons the The Mesh and its characters in favor of a non-euclidian Lovecraftian setting. It largely doesn't work, and just goes to highlight how strong the game's first half is and just how important its characters are to the experience. The multiple endings are no great shakes either, all consisting of a short FMV with minimal dialogue.

Although Hell Night is by no means perfect and has a pretty terrible endgame, it's still a unique and frightening survival horror game that remains criminally unknown today.

Dennou-Eizou and Atlus later developed a pseudo-follow up for Dreamcast called de'Spiria, a Japan-only horror FMV RPG/adventure about a psychic woman named Allure, a worm-snorting agent of "The Church", an organization based around hunting down psychic terrorists.

Single-Player RPGs / Shin Megami Tensei 4 APOCALYPSE

Atlus have just announced a sequel to Shin Megami Tensei IV featuring a whole new cast of characters. Due to be released in Japan during February 2016. Looks even more punk rock than its predecessor.

SMTIV was a modern masterpiece, and this is incredible news. Assets will undoubtedly be reused, but no ten year wait this time!

Thoughts? I'm pretty hyped already. I hope this means we get more Ryota Koduka beats.

General Games / Back in 1995

Back in 1995 is an upcoming game by indie dev Ichijou Takaaki. First unveiled earlier this year at Bitsummit, Back... is unique in that it's a survival horror game made in the style of the genre's PS1 forebears. Blocky characters, low polygons, short draw distance...and yet it all looks pretty charming. Yesterday, Siliconera have reported that the game is due out on Steam in all territories this winter.

(it also looks quite a bit better than 1995-era 3D, but that's neither here nor there)

Obviously this won't appeal to everyone, but as somebody who adores mid-90s Japanese survival horror, I'm pretty excited about this one. It harkens back to an earlier time when horror games were slightly more abstract and mysterious, requiring the player to use their imagination to fill in the blanks.

Perhaps this will inspire a new age of PS1-style indie games. That might not be so bad.
