Multiplayer RPGs / MMORPGs are dead

I feel like the MMORPG games are mostly dead. The role-playing moved to single-player and multiplayer - to mobas (I know lots of ex-WOW guys moving to mobas). Thus there is no place for the old man.

It can also be explained, as I feel it, by the fact that there is just not mcuh else to say in the genre. All of the new titles are taking either WOW or Lineage and trying to add something to the formula which doesn't get more excicing because of it.

Have you played any MMORPGS before? Have you stopped because of the reasons above or some other ones?

I'm part of the team working on upcoming tactical RPG with card game elements. I wanted to share some concept art with you guys to get some feedback. Let me know what you think, please.

I haven't found a dedicated topic - so I've started a new one.

Sword Art Online (or SAO) is an anime about a MMORPG set in virtual reality. The basic concept is that players are locked in the game and have to beat it to get out with dying in the game means dying in real life, obviously.

It's somewhat week on the plot and the main character is OPed throughout the series/game but it's still and enjoyable experience.

If you like anime and Korean MMORPGs - you should definatelly check it out.

Share your thoughts on it here, please, if you've watched it already.

Single-Player RPGs / Western cRPG revival

I guess we can say we're living in the era of western cRPG revival with both great indie and AAA games coming out more often (sometimes more often than I can play them).

There are some that are widely acknowledged (like Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity) and some overseen gems (like Underrail). And many are coming (I'm very excited about an upcoming title Masquerada: Songs and Shadows - check it out if you haven't done so yet).

Why do you think is it happening?

I have two reasons for it:

  • Crowdsoursing allows developers to gain instant feedback and funding for the project
  • The audience that grew up on old-school cRPGs (BG, Icewind Dale) are in their peak purchasing power now which creates a large enough market niche

Would you agree with my reasons? Or maybe do you think there is something else going on here?

All 3 Witcher games are known for their amazing soundtrack.

Still I felt like with the 3rd part they went beyond what's usually done for games - I actually listen to parts of it outside of the game, which I've never done before. Some of the songs are truly unique both in the way they are composed and delivered (The Trail song for example).

Would you agree with that? And why do you think it is so?
