Brush and Quill / Re: Standalone fantasy novels thread

Have you tried Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold yet? It can be a stand alone but the author has a few other novels set in the same world, all unconnected except for one (Paladin of Souls which follows a minor character from Curse after the events of Curse).

Demonic pacts, an older protagonist, Gods and politics.

Trying to picture a deaf person attempting to lip-read a video game character made me laugh, then made me annoyed.  Subtitles/CC should be in everything.

Mostly deaf gamer here. I can enjoy some music but I cannot understand speech without lipreading. Sorry, graphics are not THAT good yet. I note that battles often have characters shouting stuff too but itís never captioned (guess it would get too distracting). I guess I am not missing too much though, especially when itís Xenoblade or Star Ocean...

Playing it now, still in first stratum.

Running Matsuro, Dragoon, Mage (whatever the official name is), Shaman and the Rover.

I have the Shaman for healing but the Roverís hound summon is doing most of the healing! Still, buffs are nice. So I have no way to really do binds oe ailments with this current party, hope that doesnít cause issues too soon...

Standard EO fare so far, although the racial skills including the traditional harvest/chop/gather is nice so you donít feel like you are ďwastingĒ points...

So bought the game on Friday and am now putting it down. Just not enjoying it.

1) ok character designs are still cringe-worthy. The NPCs have more normalish proportions and then you have this anime mutant makn character. With assless chaps and a bizarre outfit. And he's supposed to be what 12? (Guessing by his height) with a mature voice? Whatever.

2) anime tropes are so heavy and cringeworthy. I guess I kind of liked the tone of the previous Xenoblade games and this one is just hard to take seriously. I guess the camera can't take it seriously since it keeps panning over to gawk at Pyra's bewbs.

3) the battle system feels like it takes a step backwards. Arts only charge if you attack and you attack only if you stand still? No stategic placing since you're not attacking and the enemy moves just as fast... can't dodge even though the attack clearly doesn't touch your sprite. And then all these different types of combos and cancelling attacks and such? And healing sucks (see posts above about potions spawning waaaaaaaaay over there...)

4) map? It's terrible. Unforgivable in a game that is supposed to have a lot of exploration.

5) the physics are really off too. The jumping is very floaty, and the swimming floatier. It just further takes me out of immersion.

At least the settings are pretty?

I thought I was the only person in the entire universe who doesn't like coffee.

It gives me terrible heartburns... so yeah... I haven't drank it in years.

I just think it is gross. Give me pumpkin spice tea latte!

Technically I am allergic to dogs but I find it varies with breed and cleanliness.
I have a dog. He's pretty low on dander, and gets regular baths.

...which raises the question of how dong magic works while you are talking, but yeah, that scene was bad.

So... how does Dong magic work? 🤔

But to address Klutz's point, it happens.  Sometimes your body just naturally fiends for a short bit of time.  I think of it akin to a food craving.  Those are unpredictable yet temporary.  They don't last all that long, really.  (And it's not lost on me that, as usual, I bring some sort of food analogy into things.)

I feel like Chinese tonight? Or maybe Mexican... 🤔

I dunno. I loved Enzo's arc in AC2's series, but AC3 felt like a step down, skipped Revolution and was so bored with the one set in London that I just put it down. Just felt like I was just redoing a lot of boring fetch quests and not really experiencing anything that different / aweinspiring.

I'd have to see if the reviews make it sound like a fun RPG hybrid or a boring sandbox game with 5000 markers to clear off.

Go to Vancouver for good and plentiful sushi, where it is served any time any where (literally every block sells some, and you can eat it at sporting events too).
