Breath of Fire IV won the poll, and will have two episodes on the podcast later this year. Thanks everyone for listening and voting!

I'm about 70% certain this is Josh making an alternate account.

Hi everyone, it's been a minute.

Retro Encounter just hit episode 100.  The episode itself is an atypical one, where six panelists play a game to pick a future Retro Encounter episode.  They start at a list of 12 games, and end at a list of four games.  Those final four became a poll, and that poll will become a Retro Encounter playthrough episode in November or December.  Episode 100 is partly playing that elimination game, and partly reminiscing about over two years of Retro Encounter.

It contains episode spoilers (technically), but the final poll is right here for your voting pleasure.  The poll will last a week, and go on longer if there's a tie.

In the next two weeks we have a pair of Final Fantasy XII episodes, and in October we continue living in the PS2 era with a pair of Digital Devil Saga episodes.  If you want to give feedback, criticism, or suggestions regarding the Retro Encounter podcast, then message me on the forums or email retro@rpgfan.com.

I live in an area with a thriving Vietnamese communit, so there are an abundance of pho restaurants all around. I couldn't be happier. I get a bowl or a banh mi at least once a week, which can't be good for me but it's goddamn delicious. There are even specialty vegan pho places around!

TL;DR Viet food is pretty good in the D.C. area.

What's odd about DC is that the best restaurants are in the suburbs. DC area also has some excellent Ethopian places to eat.

Underrated food place, Philly's Chinatown.
Can confirm.  There are a lot of good Ethiopian joints near me; some Eritrean ones, too.  Plus eating it in a group is fun, because of the big pancake and side sharing.  Hm, it's been several months since I've had Ethiopian....

My favourite is Destiny which is nobody's favorite but quite excellent.
Somehow, until Xillia 2 blew up Destiny was the bestselling game in the entire series.  Great story and characters, AWFUL gameplay that's clunkier than its Super Famicom predecessor.

The only tales game that I have ever played was Tales of Xillia. I got what I expected from it. Nothing blew me away but I had a decent enough of a time.

I was working while listening so I cant recall if it was said in the last episode but what is the casts best Tales game?
Also thanks for warning me about how bad Tales of Phantasia GBA is. I have that mint in box somewhere and would have opened it someday. Might as well leave boxed.
I don't think "the show" has a favorite Tales Of game, but that's not a bad idea for an episode!  We do have a history of identifying favorite games on this podcast.

But in general, a lot of people have different favorites.  Mine's probably Vesperia.  A lot of people love Symphonia.  I know Marcos's is Eternia and Alana's is Xillia.  Abyss is really really good, and I've heard the latest one (Berseria) is way better than the others of the 2010s.  So yeah, not an easy question.  Definitely avoid Phantasia GBA.

Vita options include:

Every Persona game in the main series other than 5, plus a few of the spinoffs
Every Ys game except for V and VI (including VIII, later this year)
Every Danganronpa game (including V3, later this year)
Every Zero Escape game
Every Disgaea game up to 5
A large amount of the PSP's catalog (some of which I've already mentioned)
A host of PS1 RPGs, like most of the Square catalog that's on PSN
Mother****ing Powerstone 1 and 2

(Look I really love my Vita and support more people investing in one)

I made a mistake when I tried to upload it on Thursday.  I'll fix it and have it up within an hour or two.

Hi everyone!  We're going to do two episodes on a Dragon Quest game in a few months, and we're running a poll to decide which game to cover:

Retro Encounter Dragon Quest poll

We went with those specific poll options because they're (mostly) easily obtained either on DS or 3DS, and don't have a now-defunct heavy online component (pours one out for the DQ IX online shop).  We're running the poll for about a week.  In the short-term, expect Shadow Hearts: Covenant episodes in February and episodes on an ESSENTIAL game in March!

Apparently the world is called Lotozetasia/Rotozetasia. Could be related to DQI and III, which in turn could provide interesting plot implications.
I have a weird crackpot theory for you. The cast members shown may correspond to the classes in DQ III. MC is Hero, blue hair guy is Thief (added to S.Famicom and GBC versions), blonde girls are Mage and Priest, circus guy is Goof-Off, mustache guy is Merchant, and dark-haired girl is Fighter (Martial Artist in later translations). Only one missing is Warrior / Soldier,  which could be an unseen character. Or I could be full of crap. Baseless speculation is fun!

I am so excited for Dragon Quest XI that I'll probably import if I get to anxious about the delay for a worldwide release.
