Single-Player RPGs / Re: Nier 2 for PS4

There's a chip that gives you the parry from Metal Gear Rising.
It's the counter chip

Couldn't agree more with Star.
I like both systems but pretending that turn based combat is a deep multifaceted mental effort is kind of a joke.

I dont have a problem with fanservice in concept but it definitely lowers the quality of the product when it's too much in your face and very tryhard about it and it's tonally inconsistent with the rest of the game, if it's a full blown fan service game, go all the way for all I care, ymmv. Cindy is so obviously fanservice, it's kinda tacky but eh don't think it's that big a deal personally, I ended up enjoying her character in spite of that, I understand those who might be bothered by it for whatever reason.

Is this a cultural thing? Don't teens wear bikinis at the beach in america? are they all covered up? Am I missing some important context?

Seeing a 13 year old in a bikini is pretty banal irl

This is a pretty interesting take on the story, agree pretty much with what was said here. It will spoil the whole story so beware

I missed you and this community too!

Lurking occasionally, busy life, didn't feel like participating in discussion pretty much anywhere online.

Finished the game today. A lot of people have echoed the sentiment that this game feels like a Frankenstein monster and I have to agree but I did like it in the end. For starters, the world exploration and vistas and whatnot I found to be very compelling, It was great to stumble upon the optional dungeons and see the various environmental attractions riding a chocobo or cruising by in the car. I was pretty addicted by the gameplay loop and even though the sidequests are really bad/unimaginative for the most part I still used them as a gateway to explore, I did everything almost, bar post game stuff which I plan to tackle in the future.

The plot in paper is good and could have made for one of the greats but the way it's told and the pacing just suck, not only that but there are a lot of wasted/cut stuff, why does the empire and it's cohorts get so little screentime, why are so many things left untold and happening offscreen, why is it all so vague, why is there so little exposition. There are a couple of instances where it's actually pretty good and the ending had a worthy payoff and kinda saved the whole thing for me. Bond between the characters is the highlight of this story, they definitely felt very human and the whole game is built to express that by showing us the day to day trivialities and interactions between these characters, by making these characters likable in that sense, some of the story beats packed a lot of punch towards the end. I feel a bit saddened by thinking about what could have been, if the world building/lore and supporting cast had been explored properly, it's definitely a very flawed game but I still liked it a lot.

The combat was pretty damned good, lots of variety with the weapons/warp mechanic/magic and team dynamics. It's not flawless as there are some poorly designed fights(one that comes to mind is a hunt for coeurls, they are swinging their huge thingies all over the place and pretty much one shot you, so it's just a tedious item draining attrition battle) but overall it's pretty fun, engaging and satisfying. I just don't understand people who are complaining about just holding circle to win, what about positioning, warp points, distance of warp attacks, different kinds of warp attacks with the royal arms, using the directional left stick to trigger different abilities with the weapon(both directional and press/hold kind of attacks), the variety of weapons with unique movesets, jumping attacks, air combat, micromanaging the tech bar, timing the blocks to trigger parry attacks, triggering link strikes. It might be theoretically possible to just hold circle to do damage and then dodge defend when you need but that'd take 30x more time than to actually play the game and making full use of it's mechanics. That seems like a highly inefficient way to play, like why would you purposedly refuse to engage with the game and choose the most boring path, you can beat *almost* any rpg by doing normal attacks and spamming healing magic/items, but that's boring as fuck no? just git gud honestly.

I dont think I would like to program emulation stuff but at least knowing C++ I can do game engine things.

Low level programming is the bane of my existence. I hate all this nitty gritty fiddly crap. I hate having to deal with primitive structures like arrays, I hate having all this hardware related bullshit with very specific procedures. Thank god for High Level languages that actually feel rewarding to program with.

Single-Player RPGs / Re: PS Vita worth it for JRPGs?
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:21:38 AM »
There is a pretty decent selection of RPG's. Soul Sacrifice is a fantastic game if you can get into the hunting style gameplay, Ys is fucking Ys as always, FF X should be really cool on the handheld and then there is also Persona 4 Golden. If you are a fan of Tales, there is that one Hearts game but opinions are mixed on that one.

Visual novels is where it's at though. DanganRonpa 1 and 2 are amazing games and some of the best to come out in 2014 imo and then VLR which is an absolute must if you played 999 on the ds. Then Steins;Gate is coming plus these weird visual novels called the Grisaia trilogy that seem to have a pretty good narrative.

If any of that sounds appealing to you, it's safe to dive in.

You live in Dublin Mesh? My brother works there in some software company. Whenever I visit him I might bump into you in the streets.

So I had my 4th date last night and we finally made out. It was my first time doing that, I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl.

Also I think I'm in love, damn arent I a cheesy person.

psh big deal, *I* got some more Saturn games.

Hey, getting games is awesome too! And if someone like me can do something like this it's not a stretch that everyone posting here could if they wanted. I had pretty much given up and settled for a hermit life but I didnt want to succumb to that without at least trying the other thing.
