Cold Steel 2:

- So I did the Valimar battle against a certain Instructor.  And I won!  First try!  Booya!  All thanks to Alisa and her CP generating ability.  Felt dang epic winning that fight.

- Jusis finally bit it in battle for the first time ever, including my CS1 run.  And against a stupid giant Creepy Sheep, no less (by far the cheapest boss fight so far).  What an ignominious way for him to get benched.  I will miss his Noble Command.  But his absence makes room for Emma on my team, who I've equipped very lightly with Scepter MQ and one of the 3 Lost Art quartz I now have.  I could make her more of a cannon, but I kinda want to level up Scepter and see what I can do with it.  I almost lost Alisa in that same fight (perish the thought!) but her 10% evasion happened to save her from almost-certain death.

- I took out that group of worm things that you're supposed to damage one at a time or they'll earthquake you.  I AoE'd them into oblivion anyways and still won.  Ready for Operation: Rescue People You Know From CS1, #2!

I know people say that Emma can be the strongest character in the game but I could never get much out of her. She would always get one shotted by tough bosses. I think you gotta put some quick casting time quartzes on her. Jusis is kind of weak but that platinum shield is an incredible skill. Strangely, well maybe not strangely, Sharon was my tank.

When you say Sharon was your tank, you mean Evasion Tank, right?  IIRC she has some innate EVA like Fie?  Sharon is a ton of fun to use with the Juggler quartz, I'll say.  Lots of AoE moves mean lots of status effects.  Never gets old.  Glad I still have Juggler MQ with me.  Was just as hilarious with Gaius when I was locked into using him for a while.

Emma has really helped me get through some of those optional super monster fights (forgot what they're called) where you get the Lost Art quartz.  It's her Crescent Shell, though, and not her Arts that do the trick there.  But it's kinda tough with Arts specialists in Cold Steel in a way that was never a problem in Sky.  If you want to stack EP, EP Cut, Action, and Cast quartz on someone, there's no more room for actually having Arts you can use!  The addition of Rare, Super Rare, and Master quartz, though, mitigates that difficulty somewhat, especially the further into the game you go.

Cold Steel 2 Journal update:
Spoiler: show
Liberated Roer and it was crazy epic.  What an awesome chapter.  For seemingly no reason I got an AP bonus for going to the Schwarz Drache Barrier before rescuing Irina.  So... that was cool.  I also came DANGEROUSLY close to facing my first legit loss with Valimar, when I was up against Vulcan in the Goliath.  Do all the truly challenging Valimar battles basically boil down to the enemy cheating by getting multiple turns in a row for no reason?  Either way, I still won, so... in your face, Vulcan.

On a lighter note, Alisa is hilarious.  And so is Rean, for that matter.  She's on the verge of openly confessing her feelings and physical attraction to Rean, and yet still doesn't for... reasons I don't understand.  And Rean, for his part, continues to play dumb in front of her and yet very clearly is aware of what she's not saying and of their romantic dynamic.  Despite pretty much knowing how she feels, he seems content to just be passive toward her and let her make the first move, just like the good little harem protag he is.  Blargh.  That said, goodness they're adorable together.

Elliott bonding events are seriously the least creative of all, even Gaius.  I honestly think Elliott might be the most boring character in the game and his BEs don't change that: "Hey, Rean, there sure are problems aren't there?  OH!  I have an awesome idea!  Let's play music! *and then they played music, the end*"
That said, I have never actually used a bonding point to view one, just save scumming.  Do they change?

I used Fie as an evasion tank and used Falco as the MQ, prob should have used Wing becuase magic would knock Fie out.  For sharon I forgot what I exactly did but she had around 30-40% evasion + solid magic defense/evasion, maybe I used Wing, Raven or Katze I forget. I beat the final boss on about the 3rd try when I had Rean + Jusis + another one one side while Sharon was all alone and it was laser focused on Sharon but couldn't knock her out.  Even if Sharon gets hit she can take a punch.

I did switch Rean and Laura's MQ and would like to bring in Laura late to finish tough bosses after Rean was exausted.

With Emma, yea that's the problem not enough quartz slots. You could really only power up about 1-2 spells.

Holmes of Kyoto (12-minute drop):  Antique appraisal has never been so boring.

On a lark I googled all of the Current Season Stuff you listed and this actually looks like something I could maybe watch.  I think I enjoy boring anime, though?

some SOL animes are decent to very very good

Took a break from XBC 2 and played through Night in the Woods. Goddamn if that wasn't one of the greatest games I have ever played. Been to all these small western PA towns that the town pretty much referenced and grew up in a suburb in which main street was anchored my a convience store and the random pizza place that's lucky to survive 2 years. I've seen all the Look Jobs! murals. The only future in these towns is getting out, and yet at the same time if you've ever been to some of these WPA towns in the autumn you'll quickly notice that despite the poverty and boarded up downtown for at least a couple months/year from mid sept-early Nov that they are one of most beautiful places on earth.

oh and BTW, NITW, best character design in a western game.....ever?

2017 just rocked, and I have even played Nier or Horizon yet

Yeah, I haven't watched 12 Kingdoms, and I don't think I ever found a good place to do so...

Also, looking at next season, at least Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion looks interesting. I still have a bunch to catch up with, though. Since I got an Amazon Prime trial, I figured I'd at least watch Grimoire of Zero and Re:Creators. Gotta prioritize those, since I really shouldn't have Amazon Prime. I'm just tired of getting told I have a trial, and that I could get free stuff...at least now I'll be able to say to myself, "that doesn't apply to me, I already did the trial."

Made in Abyss is almost worth your prime membership in itself.

Haven't watched Re: Creators yet. Land of the Lustorous is good, so is Princess Principal. Inuyashiki is extremely violent if that is your thing. Altair a record of battles is kind of a mix between FMA and Aldermain in the Sky (though not as good as either one but decent nontheless)

If you are looking for a damn good Isekai try The 12 Kingdoms. Its one of my all time top 10.

Been there, done that. But thanks for the effort.

Unfortunately, one of the disks was improperly stored and has warped, so my progress has stalled on episode 11 (hopefully it hasn't damaged either of my PS2s, as that would piss me off).

the anime really gets good at episode 11

And speaking of Isekai, I recently picked up Vision of Escaflowne (TV series) so I have a reason to trip report here again.

As far as the first episode is concerned, its already better than the OVA (in that Hitomi isn't manic depressive (yet...?)). Also, more people are in on the whole 'getting beamed up to an alternate world' which is a bit better than normal Isekais from the long, forgotten era of 1996 (christ, this can't already be 22 years old).

You could remake this for 2019 w/ HItomi getting sucked into the online world of Gaia.....no wait don't do that!

The Escaflowne movie: depressingly mediocre. The series tho, still a classic.

If you are looking for a damn good Isekai try The 12 Kingdoms. Its one of my all time top 10.

as far as anime goes, I don't think its been a good year. Gintama has been alright and I think they are on track for a solid ending/last season, and the Hanamatsuri w/o Hana episodes are great but that's pretty much it.
Please tell me why I still watch Yowamushi Pedal because I don't know.

Batman Ninja was way more gloriously ridiculous than I could have possibly imagined.

Sure the map is an annoyance (all Xeno games seem to have that 1-2 things that get on your nerves) but this game has got a nice mix of story, exploration, fun, challenge and a bit of silliness. I'm really enjoying it right now.

Guess my time in gigging bands (especially Pool of Thorns) left me jaded, but that is how I felt during gigs when I saw some of those "midlife crisis/dad bands" on stage trying to be cool/look cool and just coming off like a bunch of man-children still stuck in 1987.  Also, no one was there to see them (because everyone they know is adulting and can't come out to shows), people at the show didn't care to see them (since they were mostly folks in their 20s who wanted to see cool bands with people their age and not "dad bands"), and I don't know... it just felt like I was watching a plant wilting.  Perhaps, objectively speaking, that's "wrong" but that is how I gut-felt.

Maybe I'm turning into that very thing I despise and becoming a grumpy old man.

This thing is hilarious: http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/03/03/being-in-a-band-is-for-losers-scientific-proof/

A very underrated good time: go see a tribute band of one of your favorite bands. For the most part Tribute bands >>>>>> the actual band when said band is over 50.

One thing I really enjoy about this game is the dub (translation is also excellent). All the characters manage to convey their feelings without overdoing it on the emotions. Everyone (so far) stays cool and level headed. Rex could have ended up an over-caffineated crazy-annoying shouty Black Clover character w. a poor director.

One example of this is when Vandahm lowers his voice (at 1:45 minor spoilers) when he's explaining to Rex the situtation he's in. In another RPG/anime he's pounding the desk and turned the volume way past 11.

Hinamatsuri
5 episodes in and god damn... Hitomi... you're killing me.

My only quibble with the show is that Hina is boring. Thankfully she's been left out a lot of the show. Other than that its the best anime of the year so far.

Finished 2064: read only memories. It was very good and its worth whatever they are charging for it on the PS4 golden week sale this week.
