Amnesiac heroes and fanservice.
Non-skippable minicutscenes like when you use a summon in ffvii for the 85,000th time and you have to watch the whole thing.
Also, this.

General Games / Re: Assassin's Creed Origins
« on: January 02, 2018, 10:06:58 AM »
In any case, after reading the review of Assasin's Creed: Origins, I find myself less enthused about the game.  The clumsy handling of the RPG elements makes me a lot less interested in the game since I've never been a fan of the franchise.
Yeah, it definitely doesn't warrant a playthrough just as an action RPG experience. If you like Assassin's Creed, I definitely think you should play it. I'm a big fan of the series, and I thought Origins did a lot of fun stuff with the narrative and did a good job setting up the next entry. If you're just looking for an action RPG in general, there's just other ones out there that I can easily recommend. Horizon now has a complete edition that includes its expansion, and it does a much better job with its open world; Tales of Berseria has an absolutely killer combat system, a fun plot, and a great cast; and Ys VIII, which has satisfying combat and a great progression loop, can be played on the go or at home.

I do hope the next entry in AC incorporates RPG elements like Origins did, but I I also hope it incorporates them better.

I really need to give Tides another shot but from what I played it really didn't hook me at all.  I felt no connection or engagement with any of the characters.  Admittedly I didn't get very far...but that's because I was too bored to continue.
See, this is how I felt. I just could not get into the game. I'm glad I got it from my rental service.

Single-Player RPGs / Re: Pillars of Eternity or Torment Tides of Numenera?

I've only played a little of both, but I will say that Pillars engaged me a LOT more. It gets off to a really strong start, and from what I played, it didn't lose its momentum. I actually need to go back to it — I only put it down because so much other stuff came out. So, I think Pillars is the one I would pick up first, if I were you. :)

For those interested, here are my thoughts on the game so far.

I'll be my least homosexual self.
I tried that for the first 13 years of my life—didn't find my attempt to be very successful.

^ I guess I'm dumber than 7 year old Nick...
I'm not... saying you're dumb... I'm just curious as to why you thought the story was confusing.

And yes, KH1 still has a confusing story.  Blame Disney.
??? KH1's story is very comprehensible—Final Fantasy games can have more confusing plots than KH1 (XIII, I'm looking at you). The story gets absolutely bonkers with KH2, and arguably CoM, but KH1 is perfectly understandable, imo. That game came out when I was seven and I was never confused about what was going on.

This is the best thread I've ever seen. Sollosi, play this wonderful game. Don't make me mail you my PS4 copy!

Started the Vita version this afternoon as that's all GameFly had in stock (I would have preferred PS4, but eh.) The combat is some of the best I've played in an RPG—so smooth! Really enjoying it so far. I should be nearing the end of chapter 2.

Did anyone else make new costumes as soon as they could? Visual costume changes is one of my favorite elements in any game.

Hmm. You know, I think XV might be my third favorite FF game. It's definitely in my top five. I'd like to say my order is:
  • XII
  • X
  • XV
  • IX
  • V
But I'm not sure.. it fluctuates. I also haven't played a decent chunk of FF games, and it's been a long time since I've played IX and V.

Beat it yesterday, took me about twenty-eight hours. Definitely a worthwhile experience.

I clocked in somewhere between 36-38, I wanna say? Though I did do some side quests and got an extra Esper. I still need to go back and do some hunts, get all of the Espers, and raise my average party level to 50+... I'd really, really love to get the Platinum for this. But that means doing Trial Mode, and for the life of me, I cannot get past Stage 17.

Yay, my combos didn't suck! But yeah, I mainly used Fran's Red Battlemage skills whenever I needed magic damage dealt, along with motes.

I was kind of nervous to post my party comp because I thought it was terrible, lol

I'm pretty sure I made some bad class combos in my first playthrough for the review, BUT it still got me through to the very end, lol. My comp was:

Vaan - Monk / Foebreaker
Balthier - White Mage / Machinist
Fran - Red Battlemage / Time Battlemage
Basch- Archer / Shikari
Ashe - Knight / Bushi
Penelo - Black Mage / Uhlan

I ended up beating the game with Balthier ~56 while Vaan and Ashe were about ~53. Basch was ~48. Fran was ~40. Penelo? 20. I never used her in battle at ALL.

Balthier as a White Mage worked super well, and in my next run, he'll probably keep that as his first class.
