I beat Breath of the Wild. Thought it was good, but not great.

At the Anger Gate in Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D, grinding and breeding.

Still waiting for Kingdom Hearts Union X's next story quests.

I recently read War Against the Weak by Edwin Black, about the eugenics movement during the first half of the twentieth century in America that spread overseas to countries like Germany. Definitely a good look into an overlooked part of U.S. history.

I finally beat Resonance of Fate. Wasn't great, but something somehow compelled me to put 130 hours into the game.

Still awaiting the next story missions in Kingdom Hearts Union X.

Found another secret gate in Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D.

Have one Divine Beast left in Breath of the Wild.

Yeah, there are definitely a great many gameplay cliches that deserve to die.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D - I discovered the monster I have that takes up three ally slots can attack twice in a turn with attacks that hit all enemies multiple times, and he's made battles largely a breeze; definitely a keeper.

Kingdom Hearts Union X - Still awaiting next story quests.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - In the giant robot camel, whatever his name is, trying to activate terminals.

Resonance of Fate - Still power-leveling in the arena.

Lately I've been re-reading some of the Redwall books which I haven't read since I was a kid. Atm I'm reading the title book in the series.

One thing I didn't care much for in the Redwall books, while I did enjoy them, was the general black-and-white depiction of specific animals, such as mice and squirrels being inherently good and rats and foxes being inherently bad, although there are very rare exceptions.

I finished the latest, but likely not the last, book in Bryce O'Connor's The Wings of War series, and it's a good adult fantasy series that's heavy on violence and profanity and isn't sexualized.

Still reading The Sword of Truth books, and am past The Pillars of Creation, and will soon start the second Wheel of Time book.

The turbo mode in Zodiac Age really makes a big difference, and cuts overall playing time in a little over a half.

Are you playing the Zodiac Age version of FF12 or the original PlayStation 2 version? Because I found the ZA remaster to be *way* better.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's World 3D - Still having a good time, got some monsters that take up two or three ally slots.

Kingdom Hearts Union X - Finished all the new storyline missions, still in Agrabah.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - En route to the Gerudo Desert Divine Beast.

Resonance of Fate - Still grinding at the arena like crazy.

La Pucelle similarly lets you back out of most battles, and the Disgaea games let you use Emergency Exits to escape their Item Worlds, so grinding if necessary in those games isn't terribly risky.

I definitely like what I've heard of KH3's theme song. I liked "Sanctuary" too, but "Simple & Clean" to me sounds like a glorified porno movie theme or cleaning product commercial jingle.

I'm not much of the fan of the constant recycling of music in side games such as Union Cross, either, which is somewhat inexcusable since the movies of the worlds they have have tons of songs in them they could somehow remix.

I'm fine with regular Game Overs if a game has frequent well-placed save points or lets you save anywhere. I think financial penalties work better in tactical RPGs like early Shining Forces since battles can sometimes take a while, and it's annoying to have to repeat said battles from scratch if you die and lose progress like gained levels. An alternative I don't care much for is in the Souls games and Salt and Sanctuary where there is no manual saving and you revive at a checkpoint if you die with lost experience permanently lost if you die again before getting to the point where you died last, and gameplay decisions are irreversible.

I beat Yakuza 0 a few days ago. Was probably the first great game released in North America in 2017, coincidentally on my birthday.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D - This has given me an outstanding first impression. You can actually (mostly) save your game anywhere, and it has the skill point system from the eighth and ninth games.

Kingdom Hearts Union X - Working on latest missions in Agrabah. Haven't had any problems.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I viewed all the memories, and am en route to getting to the Gerudo Desert Divine Beast.

Resonance of Fate - I found a way to power-level in the arena by connecting a double-effect terminal to my hex field, and found a little help online that can hopefully help me beat the story missions more easily with terminals in the upper level, and I haven't had problems farming for hexes.

Single-Player RPGs / Re: Things you can't bear in a JRPG

I think RPGs in general that have playable casts surpassing the number of allowable characters in combat should have some sort of incentive for using characters that would normally be neglected, like in the Shining Force GBA remake where characters reveal backstory about the game's world or themselves when you level them up. However, it can be hard in the series as a whole to level weaker characters if they do only 1 damage against enemies or die easily, which is why I also think grinding should be fun and easy, and proportional experience systems like Suikoden are in some respects preferable.

Kingdom Hearts Union X - Still waiting for the next story mission update, and have done the latest Agrabah missions.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I'm in the flying Divine Beast after taking down its exterior cannons.

Resonance of Fate - Still in Chapter 14, farming coins at the arena. I got a ton of crap to sell for money, so my monetary problems are more or less resolved.

Yakuza 0 - I think I'm in Chapter 6, progressing along smoothly.

Right now, I'm working on The Wings of War series by Bryce O'Connor, which focuses on a dragon character known as an atherian who grows with humans and becomes a mercenary. Fairly enjoyable thus far.

Also rereading The Wheel of Time books. I've just reread New Spring, but it was *way* better than I remember.

I also returned to The Sword of Truth after a few months of hiatus (and finished Faith of the Fallen), and I can sort of understand criticisms with it, since I notice that hardly anything happens throughout the dozens of chapters, and Goodkind really needed a better editor since punctuation errors are very common.
