Skies of Arcadia.
I absolutely love the atmosphere of the game. There's something about eliminating the sea and replacing it with air that intrigues me. But man. It's got some really cool gameplay, characters you grow attached to, excellent graphics (well.....for it's time, but I feel it still looks good), an epic soundtrack which captures the feel perfectly for every event the game has to offer, a decent length, and an incredibly positive plot. Because of how positive the game is, I feel that it's more-or-less an anti-FF7. On top of all this, it's incredibly addictive. I'm pretty sure no other game has ever kept me up until 7 in the morning.
Chrono Trigger is also one i'd consider.

I found out in a pleasant surprise my boyfriend paid the rest of my preorder for this without me knowing. DAWWWWW. The key to my heart: games. Best bud once gave me a gift card for game stop. I am at least easy to shop for.... Very excited for any Tales release, and happy to hear combat is top notch. Can't wait!
Next thing you know, he's gonna be proposing to you with a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. :3

IX has Vivi. X has Tidus. All of your arguments are invalid.
But I've always loved the atmosphere of FFIX. The fact that it's sort of FFVI-like. Also, Amano does some bloody amazing artwork.

On the topic of piracy, I'd recommend Skies of Arcadia (see what I did there?). While it doesn't sound like you have a Dreamcast, you can always try and find the Gamecube port, which was the version I played through and loved. It's incredibly addictive, and has incredibly exciting moments. I also love how positive the plot is, and the ship battles. And yes. It has a wicked soundtrack. I don't know how rare and expensive the game is over in Canada, but if you do find it, I would highly recommend it!
I'd also give Grandia a go. It's easily available on PSN these days for about $10. The art in that game is simply beautiful.
Oh, and I second Star Ocean 2. Forget The Last Hope. Seriously.
