And I wish I wish I bought Valkyria Chronicles when I had a chance.  I think many people here would recommend it, but I suck at SRPGs as is and don't think I wanna take on a tank when my pawns are running around.

no play valkyria?!?!? does not compute :p

valkyria chronicles is the best SRPG made in the last 5 years, i highly recommend finding some way to play it at any cost. even the psp version was good though the story left a lot to be desired.

Average Ones:  Final Fantasy Tactics,

im glad to know im not the only one who thinks so, i found it to be pretty lackluster and to have a relatively broken combat system.

My main beef was battles simply took way too long.  Mastery of classes therefore, took forever.  Hell, even blackmages took 3 full rounds for some spells to pull and by then everyone is out of the vicinity.

Have you ever played Tactics Ogre? Battles in Tactics Ogre are way longer than any battle in FFT. I thought FFT's battle were relatively short.

SNES Rom > Speed up Button. =)

haha, win. the length didnt bother me too much, i just found the difficulty to be a bit too high. to the point of causing me to exploit on of the flaws in the games system. but yea, that whole thing where spells took more than one turn to cast....so crap.

a lot of people dump on FFTA but its actually the game that made me a fan of the genre.

if you think the graphics in any of the gba fire emblems are shoddy the DS ones are worse. only a blind hardcore fan could like the DS FE's.

Or a casual fan who can appreciate it for being a good game and not let things like graphics or story get in the way of that.

My only problems with graphics is when it is *clear* they didn't try.
Disgaea 3 was an example of that, the "upgrade" to HD was absolutely laughable.

agreed, it was a fun game but i was pretty annoyed that i dropped 60 bucks for ps2 (or dare i say it ps1) quality graphics. the only saving grace was having junpeis voice actor as the MC for the game.

are there any fire emblems on next gens or on next gen handhelds? the only ones ive seen have been for GBA and older. i really want to check out the series but i have a hard time going back to anything pre-ps2 these days

Well, it was kind of already answered, but let me just say it explicitly. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for Wii, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for DS. I think Radiant Dawn is the better game, but it is a sequel to the GameCube's FE: Path of Radiance, so you might get a little lost on the story side. Shadow Dragon is a remake of the original FE on the Famicom, but Nintendo didn't really bother updated story or characters much for the remake, so it still has the barebones plot it had back in the day. If you're able, I would still recommend starting with the first FE released outside of Japan for the GBA, or if not that then Path of Radiance for GC. But if you get one of the games from this generation of consoles then be sure to play on Easy mode or prepare to be horribly frustrated.

when it comes to Srpgs a great story is fantastic, but if the mechanics are good enough i can easily ignore a crap one. perfect example is operation darkness. dumbest plot and worst voice acting. but i enjoyed the mechanics enough that the 60 minute fights literally flew by.

i got an old fire emblem for the GBA but the graphics were pretty shoddy. ill definately check out shadow dragon though, its only 10 bucks online

Did I mention Valkyria Chronicles?

srsly one of the best games made. ever.

even part two was pretty damn enjoyable, the story was very *meh* but mechanically speaking it was pretty much a perfect port of the original. and VC3 is in the works *giggles like a 9 year old school girl*

not many SRPGs i dislike, i have a hard time getting into the older ones (like fire emblem) simply due to the old graphics. im finally restarting FF XII revanent wings, ive never played more than 20 minutes into the game at a time. and front mission was pretty bad too
9  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Golden Sun Dark Dawn in 10 days on: December 01, 2010, 07:45:00 PM
My problem is that, judging from the reviews, Dark Dawn still has all of the problems that the first game did: low difficulty, slow beginning, too much text, too many random battles, etc. I'm sure there'll be plenty that won't mind that, but those problems were the main reasons Golden Sun failed hard for me. I'll still give it a chance someday, but it doesn't sound like an insta-buy just yet.

wierd, i had zero complaints about the first two games, i thought they were pretty much perfect. i never understood why it didnt get more press.

i just bought my copy for 15 bucks. whohoo!!!! cant wait to sink my teeth into it.

a few months back (or maybe less) i read several articles saying  P5 was announced and it was said to be on the PS3 by one of the heads at Atlus
11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: FINAL FANTASY XIII on: April 05, 2010, 09:15:14 AM
Ya know, I wonder if there's any correlation (between FF8 and FF13 fans). I think FF8 is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I'm absolutely adoring FF13 (favorite FF since 9). But I totally understand that both are really polarizing games.

nope, ♥'d VIII and hated XIII....im actually replaying VIII as we speak since its on the PSP now and im actually noticing the flaws that i didnt used to. IDK maybe its just because im older and more experienced with RPGs....even still i can still say i hold a special place for it since it was the one that got me interested in FF's to begin with. everything i played beforehand didnt do it for me.
12  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Best JRPG ever on: March 21, 2010, 10:27:29 AM
im not sure what it was for me as i didnt play CT til after CC. all i know is i didnt like it, it seemed pedantic and limited in scope. plus i really liked the characters and the character design in CC not so much in CT. i cant stand dragon ball Z, his artwork allmost kept me from playing blue dragon, thank god i got past it as i reallly enjoyed it in the end.

Complete Package: Chrono Cross

OMG finally someone else who appreciates a decent game, everytime i mention it the conversation usually goes something like

"ever played Chrono cross?"
" yeah didnt like it, too many characters Blah blah blah, the original was waaaaay better"
"you suck"
"no you suck, i KILL YOU!!!"

fingers crossed they port or remake it (though last i heard it looked pretty bleak)

my choices would be

FFX
Lost odyssey
Lunar (sega CD version of course)
