I have a question, but please be careful not to reveal important spoilers, I just want to know if I'm in the last stage of the game. It seems to me it will be already the end...

Half an hour? I don't think any boss battle in From The New World lasted longer than 15 minutes for me, not even the final one. What levels are your characters at?

Nearly 1 hour to be exact. But most of the time I was resurrecting dead characters and trying to heal them, and each time I was getting better the boss drove me crazy attacks. That’s why I was extremely angry to lose the battle.

The bad thing when you resurrect a character he don't have anymore status improvements (barrier, rage, shield, etc)

I'm at level 40, the boss is Malice Gilbert. I will try to gain 5 more levels...

However, I agree the boss battles are over-excessively long.  I've spent well over an hour fighting 2 bosses late in the game only to succumb to them nearing their defeat.  It's extremely frustrating to spend that kind of time, only to have to repeat it, especially since you have no idea how to prepare for them until you've spent a good deal in combot with them.  The length of the bosses has me thinking "Oh no, not another boss" every time I see one.

That's exactly what I meant. I can accept being defeated without trouble when bosses last 5-10 minutes, in such a context I just want to try it again right away, but it's not the case when bosses are desperately long like more than half an hour…

I will try your suggestions, I didn't know we could lower the enemies' stock gauge. I thought they were filling when we hit them.

Arrrr You can't know HOW MUCH ANGRY I am!! I almost wanted to tear my ps2 controller apart… Or rather my Shadow Hearts DVD!

Bosses in Shadow Hearts 3 are EXTREMELY LONG and unintelligent to defeat. I’ve spent 1 hour with Malice Gilbert only trying to survive (reviving characters, curing hp/mp/sp, etc). I was almost never able to attack the boss... In addition bosses in shadow hearts are doing non-stop double attacks, and most of those attacks are extremely deadly even with protective barriers. There’s no challenge, it’s not even tactical… it’s simply a gigantic lost of time. It’s only a nasty trick for developers to make the game appear longer…

In summary, I spent 1 hour fighting Malice Gilbert. All my characters were full HP. I had protective barriers too. Then the boss decides to make a super double attack. I couldn’t do anything except watching all of them die. Ironically, I just needed to bring a final strike to the boss.

I just hate to waste my time like this for stupidities. Sometime I really wonder if developers are playing their product… Do they have tester telling them "hey this thing is annoying, improve it before selling it" ?

Shadow Hearts is a good game, but far away from being a perfect one…

Heh lampoon movies such “Scary Movie”, “Not another Teen Movie” and “Dated Movie” seem to be pretty popular in the movie industry.

Would you play a lampoon RPG based on the clichés or memorable elements from all the other popular RPGs?

What kind of ridicule gags would you imagine in such a RPG?

Actually, as I seem to recall it Cloud was in his twenties - 21 if I'm remembering right. He was only an adolocent during his days in the military. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's the last FF to have had an adult main character. You're right though, the way they're used is more important than their actual age, but it's just very, very unusual to me when DQ1 started the japanese RPG back in... 1987 I believe. It's been nearly 20 years since then, and we're still with teenage heroes. Do most of the players from way back then prefer to be 'young at heart', or are the developers just that resistant to changing their stories? :P

Though I'll admit, it seems the older teenager character is better for the 'going on an adventure' tale than someone who's older. But I don't see why a hero in their early 20's wouldn't be just as good.

Well then if we think carefully about it there are not that many RPGs using young teenagers as lead. They’re simply looking young and healthy, that's all :)

The average video game player is estimated to be 25-30 years of age.

Heh we should draw a list of all the RPGs wilt all the main characters, this way we’ll know if teenage characters are really invading RPGs.

Here are popular heroes that are certainly above 20;

Cloud from FFVII (now that you're mentioning it, he wasn’t a teenager)
Squall from FFVIII (he’s looking at the end of his teenage period to me)
Tidus from FFX
Yuri from Shadow Hearts
Fei from Xenogear
Shion from Xenosaga, a woman protagonist
Aya from Parasite Eve
Ash from Vagrant Story
Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile, it was a woman protagonist
Digital Devil Saga, I never played it but the heroes seemed to be mature.
Calintz from Magna Carta, a virile travesty above all :P

In a strange way, a lot of silent protagonists are actually teenagers;

Crono from Chrono Trigger.
Serge from Chrono Cross.
Hero from Breath of Fire 3 (and probably the other episode of the series, I don’t remember)
Main hero from Dragon Quest VIII
Main hero from Suikoden
Hero from Dark Cloud

The other young characters are from series like “Tales of” or Grandia, or very manga-ish games.

Anyway I think too it would be nice to have a old protagonist someday.

For my part teenage heroes doesn’t really bother. I’m still very young in my heart :D It always depends the way they are exploited in the context of a game.

In my opinion Cloud and Squall were great adolescent protagonists and were used in a mature way in the context of the game.

The types of young heroes that don’t catch my attention are the ones from games like Tales of Symphonia or Grandia III. But those games are certainly designed to target a younger audience so they fit the context.

I'm not so sure about it yet but I think that I'm at the very end of the game - 30 hours of gameplay. Happily the game got back to a serious mood after the few horrible events I described earlier. No more big cat interruption, no more cartoonish events :D

At the end the story is getting very engrossing.

I like Johnny very much as a lead. I love his style, I think it's adding something unique to a RPG. His background story is very nice too. He and Shania are making a duo of lead characters imo. the other characters are more like support characters - that's fine because I didn't want to hear more about Master Meow :P

Back then Final Fantasy used older main characters. I'm not exactly sure, but I think Cecil from FFIV looked approximately 30 years old. Kain looked old too.

Shadow Hearts 1 & 2, Xenogear & Xenosaga have mature characters.
253  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Thought-Provoking RPG Suggestions on: March 15, 2006, 10:45:38 PM
I recommend Shadow Hearts 1 if you still can find it. It's probably a rare game by now. Then get Shadow Hearts 2.

heh would you play a RPG if the main character was a fat aunt? :P

Most of the tracks are excellent. My favorite ones are those playing in battles. I like the music playing in the university and in the dungeon too.

I noticed that the few tracks I didn’t like was composed by Tomoko Imoto;

129 Pirates of the Caribbean
128 Sneaking Heart
130 By A Mustache Hair.mp3

Those tracks aren’t exactly bad, but out of context in SH. I would have probably liked them if they were in a game produced by Rare Ware.
