Oh boy, it's painful to realize for me that I was 21 years old when I played this game - IT SEEMS LIKE TWO YEARS AGO! But actually 10 years passed, I'm 31 now.
The soundtrack was quite unique in FF8, it gave the game a tremendous atmosphere. But I agree that the plot was too much vague, as if there was no real purpose. It was superb anyway.

There are wars and debates for almost everything nowadays, people just cannot share their opinions together in a respectful way and accept the fact that tastes can be different for each other.
The main fact is that both WRPG and JRPG have been cherished by all types of fans for decades, it's clear that they are two amazing genres.
I personaly prefer to play Japanese RPGs but I don't believe that WRPG are inferior. Actually, FF12 was a mix between JRPG and WRPG and it proved to be a great game.

As an indie developer I will see if I can plan a RPG with a Western feeling inside it.
P.S: I think FF12 was intended to have a wrpg mood, but most people just underrated this game.

Some of the better commercial RPGM games are quite good. Eternal Eden is still one of the most fun RPGs I've played of late. It would be cool to see some of the good indie RPGM devs experiment with settings, storytelling and character archetypes from or inspired by their countries of origin.
Haha you certainly don't want a game based on Québec's origin, it will be horrible haha but well, I can think about a funny concept someday based on our origins :P Honestly Western Lords is probably a game that you will enjoy very much. Just pray that I can enlarge my fan/customer list to start this one, right now it's not a good idea to throw myself in such a tall project. The scenario is all writen, just need real funds.

I was a HUGE lover of Secret of Evermore, this game had a very strong Western/European feeling. I considered this game like a masterpiece even if it wasn't very well received by the general audience. I also think it was the best work of Jeremy Soule. I've listened to the soundtrack thousand of time.
I also loved Ultima 7 on SNES very much, it was cheaply done yes, but I got immersed inside the plot. I think I'm the only one that beat this game because no one could tolerate it haha
I was also in love with Shadowgate 64, but this one was also disliked. There was a very good atmosphere with this game, the music score was probably what kept me absorbed though, maybe I wouldn't have liked the game otherwise. Sometime it's always a 'little something' that can make you love a game.
I should note however that I'm not a huge complainer, I find pleasure in almost everything that fall under my hands.

Battles aren't for rewards. Battles are for killing things and being obstacles. If you're doing battle for the XP rewards you're doing it wrong.
Admittedly, I can't really think of many RPGs that I thought had really engaging battle systems.
Also, I played this game for like ten minutesat a good buddy's house and it seemed pretty much like any generic SNES RPG, which is completely the intent, I know, but that makes it utterly unappealing to me :(
I disagree with you, experience and bonuses is what making battles interesting. A good example is Final Fantasy 7, it was very addicting to hear that special sound each time a materia orb climbed level. Of course battles are obstacle, but most of the time they become recurring, that's why an experience system spice the whole thing. Well, that's my opinion.
