46  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dawn's Light Released! on: October 01, 2009, 04:44:20 PM

With RPGs in general I want to see more risks taken is in storytelling, writing, characters.  I feel that a lot of RPGs, particularly mainstream ones, tend to play it safe in terms of storylines and storytelling, though some like Megami Tensei are not afraid to take some risks and  "go there" like with P4 exploring a character coming to terms with his own sexual confusion.

Hey Neale,

I never thought about it but this guy on my forum just made me remember interesting points:

http://www.blossomsoft.com/tribune/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=6700

Before releasing EE I feared the opposition of Christians about my game, it's a delicate subject especially when the Bible is altered. I was slightly raised in a Christian environment and I especially remember when my friend's uncle turned mad when we played FF10 in front of him, "Itís a transgression to the holy bible! They falsely teach that a mortal hero will be able to fight against Ďsiní and WIN during the Judgment Day! Mankind can only be saved by believing in the Christ! Stop this game right away and never bring it back here!"

Donít worry my friendís uncle is a great guy in general, but heís a fanatic. Anyway I always feared the opposition of Christians with a biblical themes. Iím surprised that I never received a single complaint even if the game is treated lightly.

The screenshots are really beautiful, the best images I've seen using RMXP.

As far as the Eternal Eden series is concerned the storyline isn't going to explore 'controversialí subjects because itís aiming the family and casual gamers, but you can be sure that Western Lords (upcoming title) has some nasty and interesting twists.

I hope I can work on Western Lords soon. The reason I am not making Western Lords my next development is that I need to build my own game engine. Sadly RPG Maker is much too much limited to waste my best creations on it. With my own engine it will be possible to venture in new areas and take more liberties and risks, and also it will allow to release my RPGs on multiple platforms.

Eternal Eden is only a warm-up until real things starts for Blossomsoft :)

Iím currently trying Dawnís Light and the atmosphere is great, the game is entertaining.

The nicest thing about it is that Daniel initially contacted me saying that Eternal Eden was a model of inspiration for him to create a game, and of course I was very glad to hear this :) He even offered me a free copy, I feel so privileged  :D

It seems that many features in Eternal Eden created new standards in the indie industry. Examples:

ē   Enemies not reappearing after being killed. (itís used in Aveyond 3 now too.)
ē   Treasure rooms inside each dungeon.
ē   Certain types od puzzles.

My only fear though is that Eternal Eden as a franchise will no more be unique, but itís not uncommon, it means that I will need to push things further with my future creations.

Congratulation Daniel for your release. Even if there are 3 more games using crude RMVX's assets, I think your game will sell better :)

Don't forget about the dialogue.  The dialogue in this one is really good.  So far, Dawn's Light is running a close 2nd to Eternal Eden in my book, mainly because of the pacing, dialogue, and music.  And about Quintessence, from what I understand Reives and the folks at Freebird Games are working on their first commercial release.

So finally someone will dethrone Eternal Eden? :(

It means that I have a lot of work to do with Eternal Eden 2 hahaha :D

I'm coming off too abrasively... really, my biggest gripe is RPGMaker.  When I think of indie games, I think of games that were developed from the ground up.  That's what I want to see.  These RPGMaker games all look the same to me, and there are a lot of them out there...

Also, I realized that I confused Laxius Force with Laxius Party.  I apologize... Laxius Party, I thought, was silly.  I'll give Laxius Force a fair shake.

To build a game from ground up it takes a lot of budget, manpower, energy and time. Those qualities belong mostly to big corps. Let's remind that RPGs are long to develop, especially for a one-man-band.

I agree that many RPGMaker games look the same, but for example play Aveyond, 3 Stars of Destiny and Eternal Eden and you will notice a different feeling in each of those games.

Annectdote: when I was developing Western Lords (2004) most people accused me of using RPG Maker because they associated 2d graphics with RPG Maker. Too bad because we worked on our own engine and graphics. Therfore many people will judge a game for its cover simply because it isn't modern.

Your copy froze?  That's discouraging, especially early on since the game really hits its stride after about 6-8 hours.  I had virtually no issues for the 40 hours I spent with the game.

My game froze during a transition from a city to the worldmap (during my first hour of gameplay).

jphussey you will love the game if you're not one of those spoiled gamers that complain for unimportant issues (although high rate random encouters is a real issue).

I have purchased Black Sigil and to confirm it the game freezes on my NDS. It means that I need to save regularly and cycle through different save slots to feel secure.

Other than this the game looks fantastic so far! I'm not a big fan of random encounters, but it's not as dramatic as most other RPGs using this system. My encounter rate is at every 10-15 steps. It's similar to Digital Devil Saga for this aspect.

All in all, I think this game was a solid debut title from Studio Archcraft.  Here's hoping it won't be their last.

You remove the words from my mouth! :)

The game's pretty clean.  I think people are just bitching about the game for the sake of bitching.

Exactly what I thought.

Anything new about your review Dincrest ? :)

outdated info.
58  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Remembering the Orphan: Final Fantasy VIII on: June 17, 2009, 10:33:03 PM
Oh boy, it's painful to realize for me that I was 21 years old when I played this game - IT SEEMS LIKE TWO YEARS AGO!  But actually 10 years passed, I'm 31 now.

The soundtrack was quite unique in FF8, it gave the game a tremendous atmosphere. But I agree that the plot was too much vague, as if there was no real purpose. It was superb anyway.

Jeremy Parish's review is really ugly...

However I will trust Dincrest's review more than anyone else. We can always feel Neale's passion for old-school games and he doesnít bother with any stupid prejudices or compare indie games with mainstream games.
