1  Site Related & More / RPGFan: The Site / Re: new site layout/design on: April 19, 2009, 05:33:41 PM
I'll just chime in and say that the old site was prettier, for all it's worth. More ads is one thing but when I first logged on I was mortified at how "ugly" everything was. One of the things I liked about this site was that it was so aesthetically pleasing, but now it's lost that... I can't put my finger on any specifics, but it just seems like the main page lost most of it's beauty with the change.

What got me what that he wanted a swastika on his son's birthday cake in prior years. He obviously didn't do this because he just liked the name and wanted to be different.
3  Media / Single-Player RPGs / 25% off all used 360 games @ GS (Blue Dragon for under $15!) on: August 30, 2008, 09:23:06 PM
Just a comment: A few weeks ago GS did this same promo for Nintendo games, so it's likely in another few weeks they will offer another similar coupon for PS3/PS2 games. Just thought I'd say so if anyone is curious.

Well I'm on Diadem now right after conquering the Lesser Celestial River (I'm moving slow cause I'm been busy with real life stuff =P), and to tell the truth, I'm actually kind of liking it. Wouldn't consider it garbage at all. The story thus far is pretty good, the battle system is great, the characters have their bad moments but on average are pretty good. I've gotten used to the VA's now and I actually don't mind them.

I think my favorite character is going to be Mizuti, even though I've never met him. He looks pretty cool and unique, and his voice in the opening movie (which is fantastic btw, with the exception of Kalas' "Who cares?!" quote...) is awesome. It's kind of metallic, roboty and I already want to hear his story and see what's under the mask. I hope it's good.

I love the art style of the game too. Diadem is very pretty and the whole world is just bursting with creativity and eye-candy. The graphics are great alone but what makes the visuals so awesome is the art direction, which in my opinion is the best part of the game. Really fun to just look at and marvel. Being able to walk around and gawk without running into random battles is nice too, because for once I can appreciate and take time to notice the environments I usually just dash through.

I've played both Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia, and I agree, both those games are phenomenal. So far BK doesn't seem as good, but I still don't think it's bad. Few RPG's can beat Tales of Symphonia if you ask me though.

The timer for the player turn, I didn't have an issue with, but the very limited window to choose a defensive card on the enemy's turn did annoy me.

I agree, I've often been hit when I could have blocked something because the attack came so fast. =(

Well I began playing it today and just got into the Lord's Mansion on Sadal Suud. So far I think it's pretty good. The VA effect is kind of annoying but I got used to it without having to turn it off. I really like the art direction, it reminds me of Myst, which I really loved. So far the story isn't much to write home about but, eh, hopefully it'll get better, at least for me.

Oh and the battle system is great, my only complaint is that there was no real tutorial before the actual fighting began, I had to learn the hard way but once I did I really began to like it.

Well I just went out and bought it finally, I got a 25% off coupon in my email so I got the game for $7.49.

I look forward to playing it but before that I have to start a short paper =(
8  The Rest / General Discussions / What the hell is Burger King thinking? on: August 16, 2008, 11:37:50 PM
It's kind of funny, but also really inappropriate in my opinion. It's all well and fine until you add the overt sexual innuendo, then it's just crossing the line.

I honestly can't believe this is real. They would get sued out of business if it was. But then again, then did have the "wake up with the king" ad campaign. *shudders*
9  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Civilization III PBEM on: August 15, 2008, 11:22:42 PM
Anyone here interested in starting a Civ 3 PBEM (Play by E-mail) group?

I've been interested in starting one of these for a long time but have never gotten around to doing it.

Requirements:

    [*]Civilization III Base Game
[*]Civilization III: Play The World Expansion
    [*]Civilization III: Conquests Expansion
[*]The latest version of the game (for me on a Mac it's v1.22)
[*]A working E-mail address you can and will check daily
    [/list]

If you have Civilization III: Complete, that'll work too, as it's a compilation of the vanilla game and it's expansions. If you've played and owned Civilization III but don't know what PBEM is, here's a brief explanation.

Basically what happens is one player starts the game off under a special PBEM setting from within the Civ game (this would be me). That player makes his/her first turn, and then afterwards he saves and emails that save to the next person, who takes their turn, saves, and then emails it to the next person. This continues until the game is over. It's quite simple.

The catch is that this can take a long time. A "quick" game can take up to 100 turns, that is 100 cycles of players making their individual turns. Assuming every checks their email every day, and a turn is finished every day, a single game could take a good chunk of a year. It could take more.

The saving grace of the game is that a single turn only takes a few minutes. Thinking out and making your moves even in the most complicated of ways never goes over 15 minutes, so the idea is that PBEM games don't really suck up a person's free time, but rather go on in the background for a long time.

I'm not sure how many, if any, people here play Civ 3, nor how many of those people would be interested. None-the-less I thought I'd make this thread. If your interested or have more questions just post them. I'm new to this as well, but hopefully I can clear anything up. I have no real plans for what map/scenario we'd be playing, my hope would be a big one, but depending on the number of interested players it could end up being smaller. There's also the option of AI players to fill in for a lack of real players. If I get just one interested person I'll do everything I can to make this go through, as any sort of multiplayer interaction in Civ III is pretty sweet. Just post and say what you think if your interested.

If you don't have Civ III, but your interested in playing, you can pick up the Complete edition of Civ III at amazon for under $15, and that includes everything you need to do PBEM, you just need a email. Also, Civ III (to the best of my knowledge) works on pretty much any computer. It's all 2D, but respectable graphics, so if your worried it won't run good on your slightly used computer fear no longer. I'm using a slightly older laptop (Mac PowerBook G4, 1.25 GHz processor, 1.25 GB RAM, etc...) and it runs fine.

The only thing you need to know and know well is that I'm looking for dedicated members. No droppers. You must check your email every day unless something really important comes up (vacation). Otherwise this is a pretty easy thing to get into and I think will be a lot of fun =)

    11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Wii 100% backwards compatible with GameCube? on: August 13, 2008, 11:52:27 AM
Yeah if you want a good BC PS3 you have to get the 60GB model, or maybe the 20GB. The only issue is that both have been discontinued and are slightly hard to find (especially new). The new 80GB PS3 is BC by emulation, which means it's BC, but does experience problems with some PS2/PS1 titles. The 40GB model dropped BC altogether, both by hardware (20/60GB), and my software (emulation, 80GB). The 40GB can run PSOne games though.

I did a quick search on wikipedia to confirm the Wii's BC and found this:

    Quote from: "Wikipedia"
The Wii is backward compatible with all games from the previous Nintendo system, the Nintendo GameCube, due to it being based on the PowerPC, the same base as the latter. It is compatible with GameCube controllers and memory cards but not with other peripherals such as the Game Boy Player.

So basically the Wii and the GameCube use the same processor (the PowerPC), and therefore should both be 100% backwards compatible.

All the reviews say the second is worse, but somehow I had a feeling it seemed better. So the characters are really bad? I think I'll purchase it and see how it is, it's only $9.99. I personally don't care if it's generic, I kind of the like the generic RPG character stereotypes.

By "second" do you mean the prequel, BK Origins?

I don't know what reviews you're reading, but those that I consider worthwhile (so what if I'm full of myself?) suggest BK Origins is far superior. Because it is.

Yeah I meant the prequel, and I think, as a earlier poster said, reviews from sites that are not RPG-centric like this one tend to be more critical of Origins, while it is, in fact, better.

    Thanks for the input.

    Edit:

Bad plot twist eh? As bad as Star Ocean: 3? Nothing could be as bad or as lackluster as that, I think.

For some reason this caught my eye the other day I I searched EBGames.com and found it and it's prequel for only $30 total, and I'm really tempted to try it out. I've read quite a few reviews but they seem to range all over the place. Some say the story is great others say it's subpar, some say the characters are flat and others say they are dynamic.

When it comes to RPG's I prefer a strong, robust story with plot-twists and good character development (that is, they change throughout the story), over a fancy battle system. That being said the battle system can't be crap.

What do you think? Should I buy it?

    "Love knows no age..."

Not saying any age is appropriate for any age, but if there's real love between two people, age should not be a concern.
