1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Suikoden 1 and 2 finally coming to psn + Suikoden discussion. on: December 12, 2014, 02:07:11 AM
I don't think it's Konami.  I think Sony published it.

Sony technically publishes every PS1 Classic, but the original publisher or someone acting in their stead has to handle getting it out there, at least rights management and whatnot.

It's actually sort of odd, SCEA is listed as publisher but that isn't the case in Japan and may not be in Europe. No idea if that complicates things or simplifies them.

Everyone else is just "Fuck yeah digital! Fuck your opinion!"

They're being more "man I really like digital myself!" rather than fuck your opinion, you're doing more of THAT if anything.

And if I was going to be angry about this with anyone it'd be Apple rather than Valve, Valve made a compromise between increasingly bullshit DRM and something resembling proper ownership, while Apple outright launched and made in vogue a type of platform where physical isn't even practical to implement, but really it seems like this was an inevitable trajectory as SOMEONE was going to push it. And both have their pros and cons, in that physical can leave you free from the nonsense of updates modifying a product in an undesirable way or being outright taken away from you short of physical seizure, but by the same token that means keeping it is YOUR responsibility and not just a matter of remembering a user name/password or having to contact the company if you do lose them for whatever reason, and there's a lot of investment needed to get a game out physically that may not be justified given the game's actual appeal or budget.

Taking the option away entirely across a platform where it shouldn't have to happen like the Xbox One originally would have IS frustrating, but proving the option is not the same as the platform holder deciding that for all games, period, and certainly it'd be selfish on your part to say a game shouldn't have even come out if it can't come out the specific way YOU want it to come out.

If there isn't a PS4 port in Japan, there's not going to be one here.

Relegating the series to digital only isn't going to make the series any bigger.

It seems some games have gotten PS4 versions or will get PS4 versions specifically for international release, the new Godzilla game for instance was only announced for Japan on PS3, then with the localization announcement had a PS4 announced too, not even sure that's coming out in Japan along with the PS3 version.

Not that such a thing is particularly likely though, and part of the going digital angle may also be they've given up hope on expanding the series so may as well serve the existing base as cheaply as they can at least. Retailers may not even WANT to stock newer entries given that they got deep discounts, Dead Souls I got only because I saw it for about $10 (probably less!) at Big Lots.

Digital only.

Yay.

They may as well not have fucking bothered.

Still pulling this crap? There's retail realities they have to take into account, nevermind this means a translation exists if they ever want to port it elsewhere and actually put it out physically. Probably WOULD be a good idea to have a physical PS4 version actually...

Not sure why the other thread got locked, but may as well continue talking about the game.

Looked to have been a genuine mistake. Merged now at any rate!
6  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dark Souls 2 on: October 08, 2014, 02:04:35 AM
I liked the DLC plenty myself, though I haven't had a strong urge to do the optional part of the Ivory Crown one. It's just too annoying and summons can be hard to come by. Maybe someday, but it's not as if I beat all the optional bosses either.

I really, really want to watch these trailers, but I also want to go in completely blind.

Ugh.  This happens in every Souls game.
Just watch one or two and call it a day. That's not my Souls trailer philosophy, that's my general game philosophy: see enough to know what to expect, don't see so much that I know everything there is to expect.

Okay I played even more LoH and just encountered the stupidest plot twist I've ever seen in a game.

Code:
So I get to the orphanage and there's this little scene, and all the sudden I'm supposed to believe that Kloe, Clem, Mary, Polly, and Danny just SERENDIPITOUSLY already know each other and always have?

Lame.

Code:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the Clem, Marry, Polly, and Danny are all, well, orphans. Of course they know each other, because they live together at the orphanage. And Kloe is good friends with the caretaker of the orphanage, due to having been nearby at the college for so long. I don't really see what's 'lame' here, to be honest.

I think
Code:
he's mocking the Final Fantasy VIII twist which was how all the cast and the main villain knew each other from an orphanage but forgot due to Guardian Forces eating their brains and the one guy who remembered being an asshole and never bringing it up.

Well what the hell are we supposed to call these?

I'm pretty sure 'no' translates into 'the'>>>'of'>'in the'. I mean, if we really want to get technical, it should be Hero Legend: ____ the Trails.

(My bad on the Nayuta thing though. That really should be Trails in the Nayuta, rather than Nayuta in the Sky, and I think I was running off of another Siliconera mistranslation when I wrote that instead of paying attention to the actual name.)

It's a reasonably simple Japanese name, not something overly long and hard to remember like Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke (was given the unofficial name of Over My Dead Body, now officially Oreshika) or to a lesser extent Zennin Shibō Desu (translated to Virtue's Last Reward by Aksys.) It frustrates me more with Siliconera admittedly because they're supposed to be reporting the news yet they NEVER give the Japanese name and keep using their translations as if they're the official English name, but it's still a Japanese word that comes out as a two-to-four letter word in the Latin alphabet appended to "no Kiseki" and it won't kill anyone to try and actually remember words in a different language than your own.

No word on Ciel...I can't say that I'm surprised but it is extremely disappointing.

Well, for whatever it's worth the offline version was JUST announced, and that probably would make a good cheap downloadable title.

You guys hadn't made a topic of this yet!?

It's out for those who backed, everyone else gets to wait until tomorrow morning/afternoon. Definitely worth it for fans of 8-bit platformers, especially those that had light RPG elements.
12  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Harvest Drama: Story of Trademarks on: June 18, 2014, 05:29:17 PM
Harvest Moon has been billed as an RPG for a long time and there is precedent here... but I also want to make sure people notice this.

Hilariously enough to me, despite this situation Natsume did come out with a better trailer, with XSEED going with the "this is the same series we swear!" type of trailer. Probably do need to spread the word given that it seems XSEED/Marvelous can't be more straightforward for whatever reason. I actually do think in some ways this could be a more ideal situation IF Story of Seasons manages to sell well and get recognized as being of the same series, as this end result is getting us more games, rather than just Natsume being dicks and holding everything up in the courtroom. That was Macross's fate and it sucked.

In general it's frustrating how many Sega games like this are being left behind there. Though here it really does seem to be primarily a problem what platforms they're hitting and how demanding localization is, hopefully with PSP/DS more or less left behind we may actually see stuff like this, but Shining's been effectively abandoned for a long time here.
15  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon Quest XI will be out 2016 on: June 17, 2014, 05:35:19 PM
I think Eusis was just referring to the practice of "derping" up someone's post in a quote to make a point.

This. It can be obnoxious to see, but if he's going to take a condescending approach like that to every opinion he doesn't agree with then we don't need him around.

Personally... yeah, those accents really were overdone. They reigned themselves in better for V but then it came out in the form of puns everywhere instead and seemingly arbitrary name changes so only I think two characters were left alone, and it sounds like a good chunk of them weren't even trying to adapt puns that were in the Japanese game. DQVI handled it best although that was still name change heavy, but it wasn't painfully so. However that was an 8-4 localization so it's less a change in philosophy and more a change in staff.
