10441  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Deep Labyrinth Anyone? on: August 10, 2006, 04:25:30 AM
I'm kinda interested in it, though it's not a high priority. Doesn't help that even the favorable reviews are giving it a 6.5. Still, it might be entertaining.

A little late, but Jon Stewart on the Media Coverage.

I just don't understand why it's going to be on the PSP.

I've got a simple answer to your inquiry:

10444  The Rest / General Discussions / Joe Lieberman concedes in Democratic primary for Senate on: August 09, 2006, 06:46:28 PM
Outside of the games issue (and honestly, there's way worse than Lieberman out there, despite the fact he basically started this), I really don't have an opinion of him.

I forgot about that... Anyway, can we accept the fact that I've been pwned by the same people on two separate threads and actually talk about Final Fantasy 3? Please?

Huh, what're we talking about FFIII for?

Edit: In seriousness, may as well respond to an earlier post.

While great graphics are nice, they're certainly not the end all be all of games. As cliched and beaten to death as this argument is... There's quitea few games I really enjoyed that didn't have the best possible graphics: Drill Dozer doesn't look as good as even some first gen GBA games, but is a great 16-bit style platformer.

But admittedly, a game's gotta at least not be repulsive graphically - how many of could handle playing a game with Atari 2600 graphics again, or a very repulsive art/graphical style? It's nice to have the occassional graphics wankery, though.

OK, OK, OK I get it! I should have said "in my opinion" or something and that would have been alright.

Actually, simply not saying 'don't argue with me' would've probably cut down on the backlash quite a bit, if not flat out eliminate it. :P

And actually, I think liking stuff like Riviera is more along the lines of liking the 'RPG that came from a nobody'. The developers of Golden Sun had developed pretty much the entire Shining series up to Shining Force 3, including the assorted side games, and would have continued to do so if not for the rift that formed between them. So, yeah. Maybe not in an established series, but definitely from an established developer.

Edit: Though to be fair, I should mention Sting's (Riviera's developers) claim to fame:

Evolution. Yeah, that DC RPG series.

Just because it looks good and it's Final Fantasy doesn't mean it'll replace Golden Sun as The Best RPG On A Nintendo Handheld (and therefore all handhelds) - it's true, don't argue. But we're all Final Fantasy favouritists, aren't we?

You're just begging for someone to argue with you when you state things like 'don't argue, this is THE BEST'. While I beat Golden Sun and moderately enjoyed it, and wouldn't mind setting a sequel, it's no where near being one of my favorite RPGs, let alone one on a handheld. I can't really name a favorite handheld RPG admittedly, but I did enjoy DWIII a good bit, loved VP:L, and had more fun with the ten hours of Riviera I played. Admittedly all art ports... But Riviera only came out on handhelds anyway.

If I /had/ to name a best RPG that was exclusively for handhelds... Probably one of the M&L games.

What a buffoon.  I don't think online distribution en masse will be feasible for quite a while.  When games start reaching 10-15 GB size in range, you'll need really fast internet connections to make download times reasonable.

Possibly more importantly, you need higher bandwidth caps too - last I checked, Cox capped the download bandwidth at 30 GB. That would just barely cover a single layer blu-ray (25 GBs), let alone multilayer ones (going up to god knows how high). If the PS3 genuinely survives for 10 years before a successor emerges, then it might be possible for internet connectivity to improve enough for that.
10449  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Victor Ireland's Rebirth on: August 09, 2006, 01:54:17 AM
To be fair, Xseed has yet to show just what all they'll grab, and NIS specializes in RPGs. Atlus grabs the quirky non-RPGs, but aside from them, I don't think we see many come out here unless it's by a major publisher.

Then again, Vic mostly grabbed shooters and RPGs, so I think Atlus is still the one to look for random whatever games.

Either way, to stay on topic I love the screens of this game.  I do hope we have a chance of seeing a NA release for this game, SCEA port rules or not.

If anyone's a hurdle, it's going to be Namco, or possibly Nintendo. I say having the /entire game/ voice acted definitely is a substanial enough upgrade to warrant OKing - it has to be, since the movies for VP were enough. As for Nintendo... Exclusivity deals and the like. Given it seems Nintendo had to go through the trouble of publishing the game themselves, and ToS was kept exclusive, I can believe it.
10451  The Rest / General Discussions / A thought: how can Nintendo top Wii? on: August 08, 2006, 11:06:40 PM
There'll probably be flaws in the design that others, imitating them or whatever, will fix - the pattern seems to be to have one radically different system, then one followup that improves upon it. The SNES was a 2D system using completely digital controls, just like the NES, but used 4 face buttons and added shoulder buttons. The GC is a larger departure from the N64, but follows the same basic pattern it started.

Likewise, the Wii's successor will probably have similar controls to the Wii, but upgraded in some fashion, and almost certainly will support HD in addition to using either HD-DVD or blu-ray. But after that... Now that will be interesting, and probably harder to predict.

I'd like to ask: HAVE you played No One Can Stop Mr. Domino? Because it sounds like it's actually a pretty good game.

1up story.

You can't predict how far technology can advance in a period of time, but neither should you assume we'll advance so far we no longer /need/ disc drives. Plus what about movies, backwards compatibility, and just owning a physical copy of a game?

Someone needs to shove fistfuls of dollars in his mouth so he stops saying stupid things.
10455  The Rest / General Discussions / Flamebait: Girl without a face. on: August 08, 2006, 07:52:28 AM
Looking at JWL's blog, and reading some of the responses, I have to wonder how many our of opinions of her predicament, conciously or subconciously, are affected more by her appearance than the fact she's incapable of eating like a normal person, speaking or hearing (though the latter will be fixed later), breathing without machinary, and likely being in great pain constantly.

And that makes me think of another thing: Could we truly understand what it's like to be in such a situation? We try to imagine what it'd be like to have her problems, and find the concept of it unbareable... But what if we were born that way? If we've never eaten before, we can't exactly miss it. We might be curious as to what it'd be like, but it'd be akin to wondering what it'd be like to be a superhero or something. Likewise for hearing and to a lesser degree speaking - which actually makes me curious as to what it'd be like experincing /sound/ for the first time when you grow up.
