10486  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra on: August 03, 2006, 03:14:35 AM
I actually enjoyed Episode 1's gameplay, so unless my tastes somehow changed enough without me knowing to the point that I'd hate it, I'll be happy with that - the only change I can see is tolerance for length, and if this review's any indicator, that problem won't be there.

Looked at other reviews on the site too - Definitely going to wait on .hack//G.U., and most likely will just read a synopsis. And it sounds like BKO may have a glimmer of hope, but I'll wait until I hear what others say - it's still suffering from one of the biggest problems I had it seems.

I've been wondering how this game turned out after the first two that polarized several, myself included, so I went to look for reviews on the import to see if they managed to end the series well. Sounds like they did. While the bit about likening the dungeons to those of SH:C isn't favorable for me, the fact battles are dramatically shorter makes me happy, and it's good to see that it sounds like they didn't just totally destroy the story in the attempt to finish it up. There were some others at GameFaqs that I only glanced at that seemed to be positive overall.

Sadly, there's a stronger argument against Punch Out - making the Russian guy Vodka Drunkenski in the Arcade version, the first guy a wimpy Frenchie... But then those were cartoon cariactures, and never did anything excessively bad, like blackface. :P

Beat Drill Dozer. Kinda short, but given that it's akin to old 16 bit platformers, I guess that really shouldn't be a surprise, plus the levels tended to be pretty long. I really recommand it to those that have GBAs/DSes, espicially with it being cheaper.

I know some editors weren't all that impressed with it, but looking elsewhere I've seen positive impressions of the game, and I enjoyed Grasshoper's last game, Killer 7. Anyone else interested at all in this?

Edit: Oh, and it's coming out soon, sometime in September it seems.
10491  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Summon Night - anyone else grab this? on: August 02, 2006, 03:35:38 AM
I'd like to get it sooner or later. It looks like the only game that actually decided to try copying what the Tales series does, so I'm interested.
10492  The Rest / General Discussions / Horrible game ads. on: August 02, 2006, 01:53:10 AM
Who remembers seeing shitty game ads in magazines years ago? Scott Sharkey of 1up's done two features covering them, the Best Worst Ads, and the Bestest Worser Ads. It's amusing to see them again and just how god awful they truly were. :P
10493  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Spider-Man 3 teaser on: August 01, 2006, 06:06:28 AM
Well, I saw the trailer when I saw Superman Returns, so while this is a late post, I guess I was wrong about the Sandman. But I wonder if he'll be the main antagonist while Venom/Green Goblin are set up, if the Green Goblin will just continue to be developed, or if they're really nuts enough to throw all 3 at us. Christ, it'd probably be 2 1/2 or 3 hours or something.

Saw a trailer of this when I went to see Superman Returns. Looks interesting, anyone have any comments on this?

Read the second link. Apparently the Jews do. :P

Hey, that's right, I should watch the Daily Show tonight to see what Jon Stewart says.

Does anyone else hear the word Festival and think....BIG SHABANG?

And....5,000 people still sounds like a big deal to me, not nearly what both articles posted seemed to portray.

Makes me think it'll be more along the lines of what it's meant to be - show off future stuff to the press to report to everyone else. As it was in recent years, it was more like a extravagent party that was highly exclusive to a fault.

Edit: I'm trying to find the attendence numbers of earlier shows - this may really just be regressing back to when it started, rather than turning into some event that's dramatically smaller than ever before.

Edit 2: Started with 50,000 according to GameSpy. Yeah, definitely turned into a dramatically smaller event than ever.
10497  Media / Miscellaneous Games / The State of NFL video games on: July 31, 2006, 09:06:35 PM
IGN feature.

Thoughts? I don't care for the Madden games, but given the deal reading this was of interest to me. This shows, possibly more than anything EA's done before, just how afraid of risk they truly are.

Edit: Actually, I should note that it could be worse as for their fear of risk goes - but this shows just how safe they have to feel before attempting something new.

Still plenty of games out there with large manuals.
I'm curious as to which one... And probably more imporantly, what you consider large.

To be fair, console RPG manuals have been fairly consistant. While SE should definitely make those that come with the boxed games bigger, otherwise the only reason they're smaller is because the strategy guides have been taken out... And with how much games hold your hand anymore, those weren't that necessary, heh. Still though, I miss silly extras like maps and stuff, and whether you get color manuals or not is pretty spotty.

PC games have kinda gone between extremes really - games like Guild Wars and NWN have great manuals, but budget re-releases pretty much remove them, and games like HL2 and SiN Episodes come with some shitty /sheet/ to serve as a manual. But then the retail version of those two are distributed by EA, so I guess that's not the best example.

Don't buy EA products.

Problem solved!

That doesn't solve the problem of other manuals sucking. :(

E3 renamed to E3Expo - Etertainment Entertainment Expo... Expo?
I don't see why E3 didn't work before, And if they want to seperate the smaller expo from the original incarnation, wouldn't something like E3Con sound stupid, but less redundant? Or better yet, a total rename to show how different it is?

Edit: Nevermind, it's the E3 Media Festival. Same GameSpot URL as above, but updated. And the attendence is estimated to be 5,000 - I think RPGFan will get in just fine, just not the assorted store employees that are there only for playing games early and free booze.
