10501  The Rest / General Discussions / Horrible game ads. on: August 02, 2006, 01:53:10 AM
Who remembers seeing shitty game ads in magazines years ago? Scott Sharkey of 1up's done two features covering them, the Best Worst Ads, and the Bestest Worser Ads. It's amusing to see them again and just how god awful they truly were. :P
10502  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Spider-Man 3 teaser on: August 01, 2006, 06:06:28 AM
Well, I saw the trailer when I saw Superman Returns, so while this is a late post, I guess I was wrong about the Sandman. But I wonder if he'll be the main antagonist while Venom/Green Goblin are set up, if the Green Goblin will just continue to be developed, or if they're really nuts enough to throw all 3 at us. Christ, it'd probably be 2 1/2 or 3 hours or something.

Saw a trailer of this when I went to see Superman Returns. Looks interesting, anyone have any comments on this?

Read the second link. Apparently the Jews do. :P

Hey, that's right, I should watch the Daily Show tonight to see what Jon Stewart says.

Does anyone else hear the word Festival and think....BIG SHABANG?

And....5,000 people still sounds like a big deal to me, not nearly what both articles posted seemed to portray.

Makes me think it'll be more along the lines of what it's meant to be - show off future stuff to the press to report to everyone else. As it was in recent years, it was more like a extravagent party that was highly exclusive to a fault.

Edit: I'm trying to find the attendence numbers of earlier shows - this may really just be regressing back to when it started, rather than turning into some event that's dramatically smaller than ever before.

Edit 2: Started with 50,000 according to GameSpy. Yeah, definitely turned into a dramatically smaller event than ever.

IGN feature.

Thoughts? I don't care for the Madden games, but given the deal reading this was of interest to me. This shows, possibly more than anything EA's done before, just how afraid of risk they truly are.

Edit: Actually, I should note that it could be worse as for their fear of risk goes - but this shows just how safe they have to feel before attempting something new.

Still plenty of games out there with large manuals.
I'm curious as to which one... And probably more imporantly, what you consider large.

To be fair, console RPG manuals have been fairly consistant. While SE should definitely make those that come with the boxed games bigger, otherwise the only reason they're smaller is because the strategy guides have been taken out... And with how much games hold your hand anymore, those weren't that necessary, heh. Still though, I miss silly extras like maps and stuff, and whether you get color manuals or not is pretty spotty.

PC games have kinda gone between extremes really - games like Guild Wars and NWN have great manuals, but budget re-releases pretty much remove them, and games like HL2 and SiN Episodes come with some shitty /sheet/ to serve as a manual. But then the retail version of those two are distributed by EA, so I guess that's not the best example.

Don't buy EA products.

Problem solved!

That doesn't solve the problem of other manuals sucking. :(

E3 renamed to E3Expo - Etertainment Entertainment Expo... Expo?
I don't see why E3 didn't work before, And if they want to seperate the smaller expo from the original incarnation, wouldn't something like E3Con sound stupid, but less redundant? Or better yet, a total rename to show how different it is?

Edit: Nevermind, it's the E3 Media Festival. Same GameSpot URL as above, but updated. And the attendence is estimated to be 5,000 - I think RPGFan will get in just fine, just not the assorted store employees that are there only for playing games early and free booze.

I just hope that with this downsized, that they /do/ release news on a more consistant basis and not just 'save it all up for the big show'. If they keep doing that (I admittedly half expect them to do it anyway for this next show), then I'll just be annoyed.

Also, could we be seeing E3 in July now?

AVG's a good free virus scanner, if that helps.

I half expect it's also because of CD/DVD cases versus boxes like in the 16-bit days/on PCs. Even EA apparantly actually takes the time to put effort into those on the PC (by their standards at least), as I heard the PC version of BfME2 had a /60 page/ manual, while the X360 version apparantly just had a small piece of crap like any other EA game.

However, this could easily be avoided on consoles: Just make another case type with the manual pins stuck out further. Freedom Force for the Mac does this, and it's the same exact size as any other DVD case - therefore, this can partially be blamed on SCE, Microsoft, and probably Nintendo for not creating cases for all manual sizes, and if the PS3 takes the blu-ray cases, I can't see this getting any better.

I've managed to bypass two worlds, and don't know how to get into them. Little help?

Hint: Remember when you beat the bosses of the worlds beforehand? If you don't know what I'm talking about, go beat them again. And if you just want to know...
You need to beat the bosses of worlds 2 and 5 as Mini-Mario. Then you'll go through the tiny passageway rather than the default one.

For ways other than the one I hinted at, you can find the right cannon to launch yourself to the extra worlds.
10514  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Sigma Star Saga - is it any good? on: July 31, 2006, 04:36:25 PM
Have you played a game called Guardian Legend when you were young? It's apparantly supposed to play like that, and I was fond of it back in the day. Also probably worth looking at if you like giving unknown and unique titles a shot. Plus some around here (Neal, Tony) are fans of the game, so you know everyone doesn't hate it or something.
10515  The Rest / General Discussions / Mel Gibson Hates Jews on: July 31, 2006, 04:31:42 PM
Not surprised. You pointed out that his father is a huge anti-semite, and while  that doesn't mean his son would be the same way, it also admittedly makes it more likely than if neither of his parents had such feelings about them. I don't really get where this Jew-hate is coming from anyway.
