Unless there's some 1960's japanese Batman show, that, as far as I could recall, at least tried to be accurate to the source material.

This... This is so fucking stupid, it's possibly awesome.

Ok, I've seen one way where the loading/performance issues can in fact harm gameplay - spell loading. Sometimes I'll cast a spell, and start off the other attacks as normal, but then it'll come late because it was loading the effects, thus screwing up my attack. Of course, it's best to fire off a spell first, so it's probably just best to wait until you see it start, then have everyone attack.

And man, I'm an idiot - I ignored the topic that already existed.

Playing more and having reached chapter 2, it's honestly not that great of a port. Random slow down (either sloopy programming, or the PSP sucks at 2D parallax), the aforementioned loading (not just loading menus, but character portraits/voices during cutscenes, and even when /traps/ are triggered), the sprites being overly fuzzy when zoomed in (maybe it's preferred to being just pixalated, but I think I'd prefer that), which seems to be tied into some of the random slow down mentioned before...

Still though, most loads are only a second or two and none of the new problems make the game unplayable, and A. it's still better than getting the game off eBay, and B. in many ways is better than I had expected. It doesn't bug me as much as FFVI/CT's loading, even though those were more consistant, probably because this was originally a disc based game that needed loading anyway. I'd say anyone whose never played it and wants to, or needs to replace their copy should buy it ASAP. But if you have a fully functional copy of the original, the only real reasons to get this are to support SE, make sure this doesn't become obscenely rare and sell for over a hundred like the original release, and to see the new movies on your PSP. Those movies are the only new addition, and outside of the movies there's no new dubbing/translation, and it seems some of the american additions to the original release are gone from this release - characters HAVE to be in your party if you want to change equipment/spend skill points. And if you only care about the movies, you can probably find them easily elsewhere.

This was a pretty neat idea when Prey used it, but it only amounted to being a neat looking trick - I've only played to the end of the demo though, so that can change. But the reviews lead me to believe it won't.

Damn though, I hope that style gets used more. I can see that being awesome as hell for multiplayer.

Anyone else pick this up for whatever reason? I already have VP, but my first disc has a bit of damage on the label side, and I'm worried I'd eventually reach a point where I can't progress further - the bonus dungeons won't load up at all, and it occassionally tries to load up the voices indefinitely, effectively locking up.

Liking it so far, unsurprisingly. But a bunch of little issues bug me, but at the same time some that I was worried about, ala the sprites looking like crap and the loading, aren't as bad as I thought - the sprites look great as long as it's not zoomed in. And the CGI movies look great, though I'm disappointed that the original opening seems to be missing, or at least needs to be unlocked. But honestly, the style of the artwork translates better to CGI than traditional animation - I can't imagine it being half as detailed as the in-game artwork.

I love Level 5...but in terms of portable, the DS still seems the better way to go.  We'll see how this goes, but.... =/
I disagree, because I feel the PSP is great for portability too.  But since this is a Level 5 game, it shouldn't be a surprise their game is ending up on a Playstation platform.

Isn't Level 5 owned by Sony?

I don't think so. But they probably have some agreements with them and whatnot, or are funded by them.

Damn, that was fairly close. Anyways... meh. I'll wait and see. If I was a bigger fan of strat RPGs, this would have shot up high on my 'to buy' list. As is, it's just moderately interesting. It IS one of the only new SRPGs I can think of to be released as of late that's from a firmly established developer who /hasn't/ made strategy RPGs before.

By the way, can /anyone/ explain where the Simulation in the Simulation RPG label comes from? To me, that'd mean Harvest Moon, an djust siulation would be any of the Sims games, or the Civ series... Not Shining Force or Final Fantasy Tactics.
10568  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) on: July 19, 2006, 03:57:34 PM
See, I knew that wasn't vaporware!

'Simulation' RPG though? For some stupid reason, that's usually applied to Strategy RPGs. I'll need to hear more, espicially from other sources.

If nothing else, I'd get a DS just to play a game like this....if it ever comes out in the United States.

I'm fucking sick of this unrealistic pessimistic bullshit.

Ok, to be fair you really may not have had any doubts, and just put that there in case some freak occurance happened. But come on, this is SQUARE ENIX. And FINAL FUCKING FANTASY, the one RPG series to successfully, and consecutively, sell in the millions over here. And to top it off, it's a high quality 3D remake at that. There is no fucking way Square could have even considered passing this over for the US market, even with as questionable as they're getting at times as of late when it comes to these kinds of decisions. :P

Edit: Also, I'm aware that you're likely not following up on all the news, since you only just found out about FFXII's release date. But then that's why I went at everything BUT the ignroance of the US release.
10570  Media / Miscellaneous Games / 4 New Mizuguchi Games on: July 18, 2006, 03:36:45 PM
Makes me wish Ubisoft just kept it. Not that I'm against adding new songs or something, but unless I'm missing something, Lumines had all the original songs, and people /loved/ that. Plus why do this to Lumines 2? Why not make a new game that's a special version for America?

This definitely is one of the last games that needed to be americanized.

Edit: Though to be fair, the game also is coming out earlier... And I half expect there to be enough backlash for them to do something to make up for this, unless of course, these are all simply being added, and nothing is /removed/. Plus I haven't heard what the Japanese release will have.

In pretty much the complete opposite of PotC2, went and watched A Scanner Darkly. Anyone else see it/planning to? I enjoyed it.

Maybe, but they don't really seem like they'd be eager to try if they could.

You should pay more attention to the news then. In an interview Lebanons prime minister said that he was pretty much powerless to stop hezbollah, and that he wished for help in extrapolating them from being the main political force.

If that's how he feels, and Israel focuses more on rooting them out and kicking their asses, this could go better than we fear.

But I have a feeling that given the overall climate, this could easily escalade.
10573  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Shining Force EXA on: July 17, 2006, 01:49:52 AM
Well, at least it's looking pretty nice this time. Honestly, if they just made it more along the lines of the early Mana games, Ys, Crystalis, basically the games that are closer to Zelda than Diablo, then I'd probably enjoy it. It's probably following the same model as before though, and while some screens suggest a behind the shoulders/moveable camera, I don't think that's going to apply to most of the game.
10574  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / What did you watch? on: July 16, 2006, 11:57:35 PM
I grew up on 80's and early 90's cartoons, but it's the ones from the 80's I think I'm the fondest of, half because of the overbearing power of nostalgia. Transformers was easily my favorite cartoon, and I think only one person I've seen that isn't above 30 flat out didn't like it (hey there Tranny).

However, I think I can watch and enjoy cartoons of the early 90's easier than many of those from the 80's; Rocko is still funny, I might be able to enjoy Tiny Toons, and Animaniacs is good too. But upon seeing Silver Hawk and Thundercats again, I couldn't stand them. Transformers was still awesome when I last saw it (admittedly back when I was 13 or 14), which was the same time I last watched Silverhawks and Thundercats.
10575  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Vagrant Story on: July 16, 2006, 10:55:20 PM
If I recall correctly, Valkyrie Profile did fairly well in Japan. Doubt it was a million seller, but it was probably strong enough to warrant a sequel.

VS might be the same way, but honestly even if SE and Matsumo both wanted to do one, there was the whole deal with developing FFTA then FFXII; a bit too busy for the last 3 or 4 years to go make a new VS. Plus it'd be smarter after that, they can then hook in all the people who loved FFXII into buying VS2 along with the original fans.

Oh, and I didn't find it TOO hard - it certainly has more of a bite than the vast majority of modern RPGs, but... whether it's because of forcing myself through games like XSII, playing the MegaTen titles, or just plain getting more experinced, I found it much, much easier when I played through it and beat it than when I got half way through back when it came out.
