10606  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Smash Bros. Brawl on: July 07, 2006, 02:12:39 AM
Nothing's finalized Dade - they've said more characters may (or is that will?) join the roster, though there won't be too many other 3rd party characters - but there CAN be.

I say throw in Megaman, Sonic, and maybe Simon Belmont. The first two seem much more likely though, albit for different reasons.

Eus...you shouldn't have said MegaMan. I now want MegaMan in Brawl.

So do I, naturally. But hey, fitting for the topic. And of all the 3rd party characters, I think he's the most likely to pop up. :P

I'd put money on Waluigi featuring. I highly doubt the inclusion of Liquid Snake though.

Hmmm... But Solid Snake is only in it cuz The Twin Snakes was on GC, which if i remember rightly featured Liquid. But yeah, it would never happen. That one was just a joke suggestion put in at the end. Anyone else thought of characters to include?

Snake also made his console/american debut on the NES, so it's closer in comparison to Megaman popping up in SSBB, than Cloud because KH:CoM had him. It seems a lot of people are forgetting this when it comes to whether Solid Snake counts or not for SSBB. :P
10609  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Has anyone heard from Victor Ireland lately? on: July 05, 2006, 08:16:37 PM
See, there's a difference between adapting a game to a different language, and what they typically did. If it was between those two, I'd stick with the literal, despite leaning more towards altering the dialogue. Preferably, I'd rather it stay in the center; taking liberties where necessary to retain the same intent in both languages (and cultures, if necessary), but not transforming characters into what they're not, and inserting ill fitting jokes where they don't belong.

Naturally, I can't comment on any translations compared to their original scripts, but I think games like DDS and SMT:N did a great job with having a flavorful script while not going over the top, and sticking well to their settings, and what I played of Vagrant Story again shortly ago has more standout dialogue than a lot of RPGs.

Really though, someone who works in translating/localizing, or at least is fluent in both english and japanese can comment better.

Edit: Oh, and mucking around with game balance is just fucking stupid unless 1. You know what you're doing, and/or 2. make it an additional difficulty, or at least give some way to access the original. WD never did either, and if anything screwed over the easier settings with limits on how far you can go and whatnot.

For some god damn reason, I decided to put in Vagrant Story and restart it, despite other, newer games sitting around. I dunno how far i'll get, but hopefully I've learned enough over the years to do better at this than when I originally played.
10611  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Verifying Chrono Brake trademark in Japan on: July 05, 2006, 03:50:05 PM
Well, Chrono's also only had 2 releases, one at the end of the last two generations. If they kept it to that level of frequency, I really don't see it being 'beat to death' to become an issue in a reasonable amount of time, and even then technological evolutions would likely help too. A bigger problem I'd see is if the setting were to get beat to death; most RPGs manage to tie up everything, and I'm not sure they could pull off what happened with Chrono Cross in another Chrono game. Then again, there are giant spaces of time that can be used for a game, and it's not like we really got to see what the time period of 1999 was like.
10612  The Rest / General Discussions / LocoRoco to include Racist Elements? on: July 05, 2006, 02:42:57 PM
Here come more racist allegations against Sony.

I have to admit, Sony seems to be blundering a lot with making ads as of late, what with the shitty American PSP ads, the Savior one in Italy, some that came under fire in the UK, and now this. But this last one just seems to be pulling straws.

Also, I find this and it's followup amusing given the topic.

For whatever it's worth, I think only a small part of the CT team worked on CC.

Radien makes a good point, and I guess that'll stop us from seeing a new one anytime soon short of tri-Ace and GameArts completely severing ties to SE, or at least tri-Ace.

CNN news story.
10615  The Rest / General Discussions / LocoRoco to include Racist Elements? on: July 03, 2006, 03:19:33 PM
I dunno. Minor changes wouldn't bug me; they could easily turn the lips black too and have remain essentially the same. But there's things they think is fine that isn't over here, and there's similar here that isn't fine over there. As long as they don't do some stupid change (what happened with Oilman in Megaman: Powered Up is fine), then I don't mind.

Also, this blog post by Jeremy Parish makes for an interesting read on the subject.
10616  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Suikoden V on: July 03, 2006, 01:59:06 PM
Yeah, that thread's probably the biggest we've had for a long time devoted to a single RPG, and it's got the most views - you should find all you need there for player concensus.

Personally, I think it's worth getting - I just don't think it's better than SuikII, and that the game itself, outside of the story/characters and to a lesser degree music, is fairly bland.

Wait, are you sure he was the one that did the artwork for P2?

That looks like Kaneko to me, but then again, you said in-game, and I never played it.

Yeah, there's kinda a reason for the specification. Plus you could click over to the screenshots. :P
10618  Media / The Soundroom / RockMan X Music? on: July 03, 2006, 03:06:28 AM
It might be more fitting in the Helper Monkey, but I suppose this could evolve into a MM(X) music discussion. Anyways, here. You picked a shitty time to ask though, seems they'll be closed for essentially the whole month.
10619  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Diddy Kong Racing. on: July 02, 2006, 08:36:20 PM
Diddy Kong Racing's an awesome RPG. Deep and complex battle system that manages to avoid being overwhelming, and an engaging story. Staring monkies and elephants. Winning combination right there folks.

(White Mage makes no sense. Why the hell edit a topic to fit in the forum it was just moved from? AFTER people responded? :P)
