10681  Media / General Games / Blizzard sells out (again)? on: June 13, 2006, 09:45:58 PM
Admittedly, Starcraft could make for an interesting MMO, and at least it'd be a unique setting. I really don't see a big need for a Diablo MMO though, since I don't see how that'd stand out from the others all that much compared to Starcraft.

But, I'm overall annoyed at the obsession with MMOs and how they seem to be gradually eating up most of PC gaming. If some of these companies were still interested in developing offline games, it wouldn't be a biggie, but if someone like Blizzard would rather focus on constantly churning out MMOs... Well, bleh to that.

Honestly, it's pretty hit and miss. But when it hits, it's fucking hilarious.

There should probably be another dedicated Webcomics thread, but for now, I wanna link Rob and Elliot. One of the ones I've more recently started to follow, and also really like. One of the guys also does Saturday guest strips each week for Sluggy Freelance. Machall's also started advertising it, so they have some comics to start off with linked at the bottom.

Beat the Spires of Ravenloft module for NWN. Will either return to SuikV or play more NWN.

cant we just douse him in barbacue sauce and toss him in a lion cage with a note that says " if there is a god he will save me from these lions" ? you know that would make a better movie than bloodrayne.

I guess we could use that to tell whether God hates us or not.

I have to hand it to him, he's enough of a nutjob to be more memorable than some hack who just eats the shit thrown at him.

I don't have a problem with the stuff people mentioned above (banners in sports, racing or other realistic games). Same counts for Square Enix's cooperation with NTT and Matsushita regarding that FOMA 900 series cellphone. I did not feel the product placement was off while watching the movie. As others have said, it depends on how those ads are implemented.

Well. I admittedly didn't know about that until just recently in a review, but I think that just barely goes over the edge - fantasy world with technology roughly in our level makes it only a small leap, but all it'd have taken is to make it a more recognizable item, and it'd be jarring as hell.

Also something I just thought of: Parody/comedic fantasy games would also be fine in my book, though it would depend on the humor. It'd be out of place in ToS, but a game with the same style as Slayers could probably do it competently.
10686  The Rest / General Discussions / Microsoft dropping future Backwards compatibility? on: June 13, 2006, 05:04:41 PM
New Backwards Compatible titles released.

Still no Phantom Dust, Panzer Dragoon Orta, or Psychonauts. :(

Downloaded both games, will mess with them later.

Been hoarding modules, checking out what looks interesting, what's recommanded (amusingly, I had grabbed one of Stephen Gagne's modules, Hex Coda, before actually /reading/ all of Stel's post), but I haven't touched any - outside of just playing the one DR suggested, anyway. Fuck, that's already an assload more interesting than the main game was.

I beat chapter 1 like I said I would, so I'm probably going to go and start the expansions after beating this module.

Well, I could be wrong. I only remember...
Code:
... the outfit she wore when you met her, the dance girl outfit, and the bunny outfit. Of course, her default outfit for 4 total.

There's armor you can earn to change the hero's appearance, but that may require too much effort. And... Jessica's only got three alternative outfits, and one of them's just impractical as armor.

GameSpot had another news story I missed.

Predicting that there'll be few/no games without in-game advertising in 2009? The concept of /that/ pisses me off. :P
10693  The Rest / General Discussions / In-game advertising. on: June 09, 2006, 06:48:15 PM
While I have yet to seriously see it happen beyond sports games and some odd ball titles, it seems people are getting more and more interested in doing it. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. What're your thoughts on all this guys?

Personally, if games were actually substantially cheaper/flat out free, I would be able to tolerate it. But stuff like EA plastering ads all over their games, and still charging $60 for them on the X360 just pisses me off. And naturally it'd be jarring in more fantasy based games, and to a lesser degree sci fi titles. So... Unless I actually get cheap/free games out of this, I'd rather they rapidly back away from this. :P
10694  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Xbox 360 question on: June 09, 2006, 09:46:37 AM
To be more specific, the core system is missing:

HardDrive (a given)
Wireless controller (core comes with a wired one)
HD AV cables (they also work as SDTV cables, but they can be handy for component, non-HD video)
Ethernet Cable
Xbox Live Headset
Shiny Chrome drive plate

If you want some american prices for comparison's sake (dunno british prices)... Core system is $300, Premium is $400, wireless controller is $50, and the Hard Drive is $100. I can't recall the other prices, but I think the memory cards are $40, and the HD cables are probably like $30 since Microsoft likes to overprice this stuff. I think just the two system prices and the price of the HD alone show how insanely better (genuinely or artifically) the premium system is.
10695  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Xbox 360 question on: June 09, 2006, 07:38:24 AM
You can go online with the core pack and no HD - but you probably won't be able to download much. Even if you can download some of the files that're online, all of the demoes would simply be too big to fit on it.

Personally, I'd just jump for the Premium system - unlike the PS3, there isn't any essential hardware you'd miss out by just getting the Core system (unless chrome plated disc drives are a must have), but it's just more convinent, and probably cheaper, to get that and be done with it.
