GOTY 2010. Can. Not. Wait.

And Yoko Shimomura herself is doing the OST. It will be godlike.

Nocturne for the first three, Digital Devil Saga 2 for the last.

Code:
I can't think of another RPG that has the bones to kill off dang near every single cast member and have you do the final dungeon as their ghosts.

General opinion seems to be that the game is fun to play despite the mediocre plot, which is always worrisome.

Maybe these people are just starved for anything strategic.
859  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Please Atlus! on: May 06, 2010, 10:47:57 AM
I'll save you some trouble:

-The OG Saga games won't come out here because SCEA reportedly wanted them to dub the whole game; which I believe is BS, because Trapt(aka Deception IV) had no English VO, among other games.

Whatever the reason, not happening. The PS2 is on life support, and the plug is about to be pulled.

I think we might still get Endless Frontier 2. More Reiji and Xiaomu is always good. They're the only reason I bought the first one. (See: Namco X Capcom)

And Growlanser, well... we're still bearing the torch, but the prospects are getting bleak. Atlus are too busy localizing PSP RPGs done by other developers to bring over one of their own.

Could also be because of reported text localization issues, but that's hearsay. I bet someone could crack it. If a hacker can do it, why can't Atlus USA?

Gonna say Strange Journey or Etrian Odyssey.
861  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Obscure "Am I the only one who's played/heard of this?" games thread on: April 21, 2010, 12:16:44 AM
My vote's for the PS2 Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land.

I'm sure someone here's played it, but overall, it's the most criminally overlooked RPG I've ever played. Great story, artwork, music, everything.

As for non RPGs, Xyanide.

Seconding Urushihara and Kaneko.

One thing I love about Kazuma's art: his female characters have a normal look to them, they're never ridiculously proportioned.

Take my favorite Kaneko character:

Pure classiness.

I also really like Shigenori Soejima's art. I first took a liking when I played Stella Deus(which has beautiful art), then he took Persona 3 and 4 and ran with it.

As for the western RPG, V:TM Bloodlines had some really nice concept art.

I enjoyed Baroque. It's fun to play, has an interesting setting, and the challenge appealed to me.

Also, each play unveils more of the (admittedly obtuse) plot.

Not really sure why a game with stellar gameplay and decent everything else gets an EC, but to each their own. :P

Also, agreed on Rhapsody DS not being worth anything. It was the let down of the year, and I loved the PS1 version.
864  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: March 25, 2010, 01:28:42 PM
One SMT demon would devour the entire cast of Pokemon.

I really love SJ's music so far. Very ambient.

I think it's funny that so far, Devil Survivor was bloodier. Corpses would have pools of blood under them.

SJ is definitely darker though, especially in language and tone.
865  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star on: March 11, 2010, 12:20:48 AM
I never played the original Lunar, but I really canīt imagine Alex playing anything but the ocarina.

At least it's not a Zelda ripoff.
866  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star on: March 10, 2010, 11:46:41 AM
I recall when they said they were going to bring back elements from the original games, which originally had me psyched. (I bought the very first Lunar on the Sega CD when it came out, so I'm a little obsessed with the series. :P )

From what I've seen, this is just another remake of the PS1 version.

If they had reverted the ocarina to Alex playing a harp again, I would have bought it on day 1. (And better let, leaving Luna behind when going to Meribia.)

But I've acknowledged that this remake isn't for me, it's for the newer fans, so I'm not going to let it get to me.
867  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Is the JRPG forumla growing stale? on: February 04, 2010, 03:49:45 PM
I have too many good RPGs waiting to be played to waste time on bad ones.
868  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Is the JRPG forumla growing stale? on: February 04, 2010, 01:37:08 PM
Atlus seems to be the only developers series capable of being consistently good as of late. Even the subpar SMTs are still enjoyable at worst.

The stuff Tri-Ace is putting out seems embarrassingly bad, aside from being pretty, but that doesn't take an RPG very far.

Though Half-Minute Hero was amazing. I think as long as developers manage to innovate and not retread old ground, RPGs will be fine.
869  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Interesting quote from the Phantasy Star IV director on: January 29, 2010, 06:41:40 PM
For me, the most interesting bit was learning that she was the director of Magic Knight Rayearth on the Saturn.

It's a totally different game.
870  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Idea Factory: how do these hacks stay in business? on: January 27, 2010, 02:00:49 PM
It seems like every single game they release is mediocre at best. Stereotypical art design, pandering fan service, terrible gameplay(and usually voice acting to go with it, hi Chaos Wars), etc.

So why are they still in business? Why do people keep buying their crappy games?

And worst of all, why would anyone let them near Sakura Wars V? (They're doing the Wii version, rumor has it.)

I'm hard pressed to think of a single good game on this list.
