You know... I don't think my father would approve of me dating the undead, and you're probably too nice a zombie-pirate for me anyway. Let's just be friends instead.

1  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ar tonelico 3 coming to the PS3 January 2010 on: March 14, 2011, 03:20:11 AM
I respect someone who can own up to their mistakes.  I'm glad the affair was straightened out.

As for Ar tonelico 3...the game's been getting bad press all around.  Even in Japan, the reviews were less favorable than usual.  One possibility: the game really doesn't live up to its predecessors.  A second possibility: the transition to the PS3 has resulted in inflated expectations.  I expect the "truth" is somewhere inbetween: GUST made too many changes to the formula and ended up with a less than polished product because of it.  In addition, the game is now faced with a far more critical crowd than the previous two games met.  I see people complaining about elements in Ar tonelico 3 that were very much present in the previous 2 games.  NISA calls it "Qoga", not 3...but that's just marketing.  This game is for people who played and liked the previous 2 games.

It should come with a sign:

Here there be moe.  Otaku: Welcome back.  All others: Turn back now.

I have a feeling this game will let me down a bit.  Nonetheless, it's Ar tonelico.  As long as the core elements from the original are there, I can't not like this game.  This series was made for me.

I didn't read the entire thread (in fact, I only read the tail end of the argument).  I don't even post here anymore.  But I just thought I'd show up to say this: I can't believe you banned WildArms over something this silly.  Not to mention the way the RPGFan editor responded would've gotten HIM banned on any other site.  Disgraceful.  As moderators, you have a duty to not use your banning powers for selfish reasons.

I had my own issues with the review--but it looks like RPGFan doesn't value dissent.  A pity.

has this topic turned into anything interesting, yet?

Which only goes to show that we're more well-adjusted, responsible, and *gasp* NORMAL than expected.  Either that, or the addicts aren't responding because they're too busy playing games to waste time talking about them on teh Intarwebnet tubes.

So you're suggesting then that message board addicts are more normal than game addicts?

My highschool wasnt easy, but i could pass the tests without studying much in my house, just paying a lot of attention in class, as for homeworks.. i barely do them, good thing it just represents 10% of the notes. So i had a lot of free time in my house :D

And now.. in college..., well it actually depends in what are you studying (i think most of the ppl that went to college know that there are careers not as hard as others), and i know i picked the second hardest of my college (first one being phsicologist), and is telecomunications engineering.. and for a way to describe it, we a good part of what electronic and system engineeres see, with a plus of all the wireless comunications, so well, we have now around 6 classes, in high school i had 12, but hell, college is like the same multiblied by 3, and in school my mom or dad could take me, now i have to use subway and bus (i spent 1 hour to go, and 2 to get back to my house) and i spent from 7 am until 4-5 pm in the college, is like my house already (thanks god for handleds), so when im finally in my house, im tired as hell, i can barely see my ps3 shining there and besides, now i do have to study in my house :(

Well yeah, 3hrs of traveling kind of kills your day.  I lived on campus, so classes were never more than a 15min walk away.  Also, I was taking 15-16 credit hours per quarter, as I was in no rush to graduate (I entered with a significant amount of transfer credit, and since I wasn't paying the bills, there was no reason not to stay the full four years).  Also since my bills were covered, there was no need to get a side job.  As a science major I had some hard classes, but nothing too bad.  So yeah, undergraduate days were great.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the video in that link has been posted once in this thread already and probably more times in other threads.

Nope, Aksys released ANOTHER trailer with ero themes.  That makes two now, plus some bawdy press releases.

Dincrest: Of course, the ploy backfires on someone like me.  My line of logic is "why waste money on that when I could get a pair of real eroge titles from Peach Princess or something?"

Because JAST's lineup of RPGs sucks...though Mangagamer's upcoming Koihime Musou could be interesting.  On the other hand, Japan has a ton of 18+ RPGs available (Sengoku Rance being one of the best, now fan-translated).  Still, games like Ar Tonelico and Agarest War have a certain charm to them.  Hell, Ar Tonelico 2 ranks near the top at Erogamescape, a site that compiles user metascores for visual novel-style games (18+ or otherwise).
6  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 on: January 27, 2010, 12:51:27 AM
Maybe if you read this review and decided the series deserves a second chance?

NOTE: I think Jeremy Parish's is most relevant to me, but Joystiq's is interesting in how someone who didn't care for the original falls in love with the new game.

I'm sort of worried about all this talk of battle system redesign and a more action-like system.  I'm not too thrilled with the prospect of a glorified Halo, albeit with a stronger focus on story...I got into the series expecting an RPG with FPS-elements, not an FPS with RPG elements.

According to Wikipedia and every other source I could find, Resonance of Fate isn't even out yet.  Expected release date in Japan is Jan 28.

According to the IGN review, playing the prequel deepens the experience.  If you didn't like the first game, why would you bother with this one?
9  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: How long do you play games a day? on: January 26, 2010, 09:20:43 PM
I play around 3-5hrs a day on weekdays, and around 10hrs a day on weekends, for a total of around 30-40hrs a week I'd estimate.  Other than web surfing and message boarding, gaming is all I really do in my free time.

Back in my undergraduate days I'd play MMOs for 8-10hrs a day.  It's pretty easy to do: go to class for 3-4 hrs, do whatever work has to be done immediately (maybe 1-2hrs), then game the rest of the day.  When exams came up that would eat up the weekend or the day before, but other than that, I never had more free time than in my undergrad days.  Even high school kept me busier.  I wish I could've been an undergrad forever.

I thought the Agarest War trailer was hilarious.  What's even more hilarious is people's responses: there's actually morons out there that after watching the trailer now think Agarest War is a hentai game.  Really.  Even my mother, who knows 0 about games, was able to quickly deduce that the ad was simply a marketing joke.

Its the same marketing ploy most movies use these days. Take the absolute best of the movie and stick it in a trailer to deceive people that the movie in question is higher quality than it is. After all why would anyone show you the best parts of something for free (especially given how barely watchable said trailer usually is)?

What?  I don't see how your comment applies at all to the Agarest War trailer...

That article presents 0 evidence showing that said commericals resulted in lost sales.  Kind of silly considering they put it in the article title.

Also, you can purge the men here (meaning you can strip the men)

If true, I imagine the justification is something along the lines of why clothing destruction in Soul Calibur 4 applies to both genders: because otherwise feminists could cry sexism.  In other words: because Sony said so.
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Anyone here have a PS3? on: December 09, 2009, 01:44:47 PM
I wanted backwards compatibility, until I realized that I might as well just buy a new PS3 AND PS2 rather than scour the market for a launch model PS3 (which isn't 100% compatible with PS2 games either--more like 99% with some glitches, most notably the save glitches).  In my case, I still have a working PS2.  It was just the fanboy in me that wanted the "best" PS3 possible.

If you have a launch model PS3, great.  Not much reason to buy one at this point however.  Not with how the market currently is.

The logic seems to be that anyone can wield two weapons at once (although the untrained won't be particularly good at it), but it takes a great deal of proficiency to wield two full-sized weapons at once.  It's in the manual somewhere, as well as the description for the final dual wielding talent.
15  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: SO4 Last Boss - HELP! on: December 06, 2009, 03:39:58 PM
I can remember the final boss being a pain in the ass, and had twenty-five zillion health, and dealt over 9000 damage at times. IT IS VITAL TO HAVE SARAH IN YOUR PARTY, OR ELSE YOU'RE SCREWED! If I can recall correctly, my allies were around the mid-60's when I beat the final boss, leaning towards the 70's. I'd recommend grinding to about those levels, if not higher. Also, if your characters are in danger, heal with Sarah yourself, because she can get pretty lazy on you in a battle as tedious as this one.

I would say more, but I'd probably just be repeating what has been said above, if I haven't done so already.

Good Luck.

I don't remember having much trouble with SO4 til the bonus content (except when I chose to brute force fights rather than play like you were supposed to, and even that just made them long).  Might've been overleveled, I think my group was around level 70-71 at the final boss fight.  Sarah is definitely not required, even for postgame.  I used Myuria as main healer, but of course whoever you give the healing textbook to (Fairy Heal?) to is going to be an awesome healer.

To be honest, I found the arena battles to be one of the harder parts of the game, simply because I always tried to tackle fights I was way underleveled for.

Takeaway point: Don't use Sarah.  She's annoying.
