I'm trying to avoid reviews. I hear its good, but I don't want to get sucked into all this hype, because its bound to disappoint if I get my hopes up. I've already seen a few people mention that its being called the best jRPG this gen, but that bar is set quit low, so I'm not jumping for joy until I play it and decide its worth it. Needles to say, despite my scepticism, I am going to buy it fairly close to launch.
Unless the reviews were on the level of Beyond the Beyond, I was going to buy it regardless of reviews. I'm not going to even bother reading them, because I made up my mind long ago. Same here. But everywhere I ago I see people mentioning 10s and 9s... I've gotta admit, it kinda makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm still curious to see whether NoA may pull it out of their sleeves yet or not. Maybe I'll just wait to hear sales figures before I do anything.
... And that graphics bit in the IGN review's pretty dumb. Yeah, it's probably 7.0 compared to the HD consoles, but shouldn't the ideal for reviews to be relative to a platform and what's available there? I can buy 7.0 compared to, say, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Epic Yarn, Donkey Kong Country Returns, or even how Skyward Sword is shaping up, but saying "it's the best the system can do" then slamming a 7.0 on it, uhh, wouldn't you have to start limiting portable graphics to 5.0 at the highest or something?
Yeah I found the bit about the graphics to be freaking hilarious. Other parts of the review felt amateurish as well.

Finally! I have a good feeling about this one. Best JRPG in the past 5 years? I doubt that's the case. Best JRPG this gen? That's not saying much :P

I'm not so against boss fights, so that doesn't bother me anyway.
Here's the real problem though, it's not so much for/against boss battles as that a build designed around sneaking around and instant take downs could be more or less caught with their pants down by a boss fight. If they QA'd it to ensure that you can get through all bosses with the lowest possible combat abilities then great, I won't really care that much, or if it's the kind of thing you can hot swap as the situation warrants. However, if you DON'T QA this properly then you get incidents like Alpha Protocol where the game became torturous to play because a build that could completely destroy areas will be a liability against a boss encounter or similar heavy combat situation. Ideally they could apply the 'take any approach you want' design philosophy to their boss fights, but failing that I want them to make sure they aren't utterly aggravating because I didn't want to play the game Rambo-style. Couldn't have said it better myself. If a few combat augs are enough to avoid frustration when fighting harder bosses then I don't mind this at all. It's just that the dev team seems to have nailed the freedom of approach philosophy in all other scenarios, so all they had to do was adapt boss fights to that philosophy and we could've had a 100% consistent game. But if it was a compensation in order to release the game on time then I guess it's understandable. Although I have my doubts regarding that excuse.

I've heard that DS games don't look too hot on the 3DS, can anyone confirm?
From Gamespot forums: The top screen of the 3DS has a higher resolution that previous iterations. This can make the game seem somewhat blurry, but not unplayable. When selecting to play a DS game from the menu, simply hold down the start or select buttons and your 3DS will display the game in its native resolution and the blurriness factor is removed from the equation. Not 100% sure about this, but I've seen it mentioned a few times on other forums as well.

I'm surprised that Mimana Iyar Chronicle is in the top 200 (and rated higher than Anachronox to boot.) I *STILL* have a hard time believing people actually LIKED that piss poor excuse of a video game.
Oh. So it's ranked higher than Demon's Souls. ... I have no words.

Games that require a lot of grinding should have random encounters, and games that don't require a lot of grinding should have on screen encounters.
No. Games that have random encounters and use the need for grinding as an excuse should cut the bullshit and have less grinding. Random encounters are not needed anymore. Turn based battles remain awesome though and still have room for improvement. My favourite being the press-turn battle system.
