Ah Nostalgia. Gotta love it. I've got a DVD-R full of old Zohar/Solaris pics from the glory days. Sadly I'm now the nomad kitty looking over the graveyard of what was once Solaris. Looks like alot of the old image collections still exist too.

Maybe it's just getting older, but no other MMO had ever inspired me as much as FFXI did, nor have I been a part of a better community. It's too bad that nothing golden ever stays, but I have hope for it's successor.
887  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: White Knight Chronicles dated for the US on: February 05, 2010, 05:51:29 PM
I picked it up and haven't found it to be as nearly horrible as everyone seems to claim it is. Granted, you can't go into any L5 game without having an obnoxiously overdone GUI, and if you can get past it, its a pretty solid JRPG. I haven't had a chance to try out GeoNet as the servers have been down, but the game isn't any worse than any of the other JRPGs released recently. The graphics are actually pretty nice if you can get past the somewhat dated character models. The music is great, and the combat system (once you get used to how it works) isn't bad at all. At least its a solid RPG, not one of the RPG-lite (i'm looking at you FFXIII). I like the fact that you have a pretty broad spread of customization options from equipment as well as abilities. Alot of the problems James outlined in the import review seem to be addressed. I've had no issues with leveling up - and while mana is indeed a precious resource - having hp/mp regen out of combat helps that alot. Personally i'm liking it a hell of alot better than the Tri-Ace trash i've had to swallow so far this console generation - even if some aspects of the game seem dated. I'm not sure how many things have changed between the original release and this International version - but I haven't found any major issues with the game, and am enjoying it quite a bit.

I don't think the game comes anywhere close to the disgusting mess of a game PSU was. WKC actually has a cohesive story, decent scripting, VARIETY and depth of gameplay. If you don't plan on buying it, rent it for a bit and give it a chance. I don't think the game deserves all the ire everyone keeps wanting to throw at it.

Well, my schedule hasn't changed in a decade, so I'm still mister nocturnal. By the time the game is out my daughter should be old enough to be sleeping at night. Though its not like I havent mastered the skill of simultaneous gaming and snuggling. I may just have to play a Lalafel just to keep her giggling.

The original Solaris core and friends will definately be playing. We've kind of had a reunion of sorts on Facebook, and once beta invites go out, I'll probably get the ball rolling on refitting the Aion legion website and vent. Would definately like to have alot of the old community back together. I'll keep you guys posted as more info comes along. Hopefully people will be less fucking fickle this go round.

Bayonetta was fun, but honestly, aside from the tongue-in-cheek humor and blatant oversexuality - I really didn't find it all that more interesting than DMC4. Outside of the gameplay (which is amazing) the fact that everything was so incredibly over the top, for no other reason than being over the top, got really old by chapter X. The game is far too long to not take itself seriously - and fuck, how many times do you have to fight through an alternate version of Vigrid with almost as many QTE's as Ninja Blade. Bayonetta is definately stylish, sexy and intense, but I enjoyed Darksiders alot more overall.
891  Media / General Games / Re: Darksiders on: January 07, 2010, 08:38:57 PM
Just finished the game - sequel is definately incoming. Clocks in about 20 hours with most of the exploration, items and Abyss Armor completed (which looks completely bad ass I gotta say). You might have a time finding it all, so here's a really great video guide...

Expect to play for a good 40 hours if you plan of leveling up all the weapons and purchasing all the upgrades. Really had a blast playing it.
892  Media / General Games / Re: Darksiders on: January 07, 2010, 12:23:27 PM
Almost done with the game (2/3 through the Black Throne), and I have to say i'm pleasantly suprised - once I got over the shameless cribbing of game systems (Halo, Zelda, Portal, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus). Truthfully, about halfway in, around the time you're going after Greiver, I got a very strong Soul Reaver impression, which once upon a time was criticized for being too much of a Zelda clone. The combat starts out pretty one dimensional but really picks up after you gain more weapons and purchase more moves. The game world itself is pretty impressive, though I wish you had more open areas with which to explore. Some of the later puzzles are a pain in the ass also if you've never played Portal before. As an action RPG it borrows from the best, albeit somewhat shamelessly. Though as good as the game is, after how long its been in development I'd expect it to be polished as hell.

Also, for those worried about the screen tearing on the 360, don't be - install it to the HDD and alot of those annoyances vanish. From messing around with both versions I've found that the PS3 version has less screen tearing compared to an uninstalled 360 version, more prevalent aliasing and somewhat washed out colors. The 360 version still has jaggies but has a much more robust color palette (no idea why though.) Honestly your performance regardless of the console is comperable. The game really could have used a little more time to cook, but I wont complain.
893  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: FFXIV Thread on: December 25, 2009, 05:25:13 AM
Pretty graphics aside, if they pull the same blatant recycling of mobs they did in FFXI, then they truly have learned nothing. We can ohh and ahh over pics and some PR vids, but it's the hands on experience that is going to determine if the game is going to be any good. In the post WoW era, gamers are an even more fickle bunch, and the playing field has changed dramatically. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited over the game, and alot of it is from an old love of FFXI, but times have changed and from what SE has done with FFXI over the years doesn't bode well for FFXIV; unless they can truly shed the impression of a rehash and bring something truly unique to the table without bending to the influence of the market or adhering to the inflexibility they are renowned for. We are definately due for a truly innovative MMO experience and SE is definately qualified to do it, but will they have the balls to?

I want the game to succeed, but there are so many people who got burned on the time sink nature of FFXI that they hope the game fails so that SE drops the genre entirely. So I ask you guys, what changes would you like to see from FFXI and which things would you like to keep? It's obvious they're preserving FFXI in FFXIV to allow some continuity for the fans.

Also PC all the way for me. Playing an MMO without voicechat is limiting to me, and having an alt tab option helps if I'm in need of a wiki. I think the game will run great on the PS3, but if they optimize for DX11, it's going to be the best looking version of the bunch. There's alot of limiting factors with the PS3 in the graphics dept, and I'm betting you all those pretty pics are from the PC build, which is also the version they demoed at GamesCom. I totally disagree that this is a "console" MMO, especially since the PS3 supports a mouse and a keyboard, so the interface argument in moot, likewise any PC can use a game controller. The main factor is going to be if people have PCs who can run the game well, or folks with PS3's (which is the most economical).
Unlike FFXI the game isn't built for one architecture, so we should see robust versions tailored to the capacity of the platform.

896  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: New Blade and Soul 11 min trailer! SWEET JESUS IT ROCKS! on: December 02, 2009, 07:04:41 AM
Well, the only NCSoft game that doesn't have PvP would be City of Heroes, which really isn't a Korean MMO. I used to hate PvP but when its done well its awesome. It does change the dynamic of PvE when you have to keep looking over your shoulder and being battle ready at all times, but in my experience it really makes the PvE more exciting. Because fetch quests and killing X number of mobs for Y number of drops is only so interesting for so long.

Of course nobody likes getting ganked, it interrupts the flow, but occasionally you'll find an even fight and those are awesome! It really makes you feel like your faction/race is at war - which is yet another reason why I LOVE Aion.
897  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: New Blade and Soul 11 min trailer! SWEET JESUS IT ROCKS! on: November 30, 2009, 01:18:15 AM
You silly monkey, you try Aion without coming on my server, or letting me know!? I am wounded to the quick!

I bleed.... rivers of anguish at your thoughtlessness :(

oh well...

BTW the too busy line is sooo not working with this crowd. Pat for one is a father of THREE and he's still truckin!! KAWAI 4EVA!

Though seriously, ever since our online RPGFan community got fractured when WoW came out, there's been a rift in reality that needs mending. We need to like, decide on one game to play and stick to it. I hate having to have 3 active MMO accounts just so I can keep up with my friends.
898  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: New Blade and Soul 11 min trailer! SWEET JESUS IT ROCKS! on: November 29, 2009, 09:45:33 AM
Oh hidoshi, don't be such a wet blanket. MMOs are about activities you do together, and I think the genre has evolved well. Maybe you should try getting your feet wet again. Design is only as good as the people you play with.

Let's also not forget there will be ample pvp, so the mouse haters can be vilified in rodent stomping, while the mouseketeers can represent!
