1  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: THEY'RE BRINGING BACK DUCKTALES (WOO-OO) on: April 23, 2013, 12:25:49 PM
I'm looking forward to this remaster. The graphic direction was handled impressively. I also can't believe they got back the voice actors, especially now that some of them are in their 90s. Wow!! Perhaps if sales do well, we might see other titles revisited (i.e. Talespin, Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Quackshot). Of all those mentioned I'd like to see Quackshot, that game was insanely addictive and challenging back on the ol' days of the Sega Genesis.
2  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon's Crown (Vanillaware RPG, now 2013 all regions) announced for PS3/Vita on: March 20, 2013, 12:48:14 PM
Did a quick search. Amazon.com and Gamestop.com are listing the release date as August 6, 2013 for domestic U.S.
3  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Robotech movie apparently going ahead on: March 01, 2013, 11:34:06 AM
I had mixed feelings about this adaption when it was announced a few years ago. Nothing was said for a while, so I pretty much thought it was dead in the water until I saw their still moving ahead with it recently. I think the movie could be good if they can use the same team who's handling the digital effects of the upcoming Pacific Rim movie this year. Have you guys seen that trailer? I got a big Evangelion vibe after watching it.

I just hope this Robotech movie is scripted well. One of my biggest complaints about these video game, anime, comic adaptions is when the dialog is written terribly (i.e. Dragon Ball).

Oh, and while we're on topic for anime movies being adapted for live action, another one is "Ninja Scroll." I know Leonardo DiCaprio's company "Appian Way Productions" was attached to a live action Akira adaption, but I haven't heard anything on that for years...

Xenogears, Vandal Hearts 1, and Suikoden 1 would be awesome, but I highly doubt it would ever happen. I don't know if it's just me, but I'm starting to sense gamers are getting tired of ports, remakes, and sequels (at least on current gen consoles). Gamers are looking for innovative original titles that would renew their interest in gaming.
5  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: New Xenoblade? on: January 23, 2013, 12:03:19 PM
Day 1 buy for me. I got the Wii U for Christmas, but haven't played much of it since I just have Nintendoland and the new Super Mario Bros Wii U game. Since it takes a while to localize a game, I'll have enough time to transfer over my Xenoblade Wii data, beat the game and be ready for this one.

Back on topic, my first impression from the teaser trailer is that it's a direct sequel to Xenoblade and not just another "xeno" title, but we'll see. Will we see the story take place on the Mechonis titan? If you notice the fighting mechanics and exploring lush fields laden with giant enemies, it's very reminiscent of Xenoblade. The big red "x" did throw me off though. We'll just have to wait for more details to come.
6  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ragnarok Odyssey on: November 19, 2012, 06:38:09 PM
While waiting forever for this delayed game this year, I bought, played and just finished Gungnir. I played the begining of RO on Vita as my first Vita title. I wasn't terribly impressed from the get-go. The menu itemization takes a bit of getting used to since you don't always know what is from what after you complete a quest. Timed quests is interesting as it rushes you to not dilly dally and get straight to action.

The frustrating thing I had experienced was going through the quest to only be killed by the boss after I ran out of potions. Perhaps I need to take up the multiplayer mantle to get through some of the tougher bosses.

As far as the story goes, I felt it was missing, but again, I probably just need to progress some more. I'll give this another try before maybe moving onto the other Ragnarok title; Ragnarok Tactics.

If anyone wants to add me to their RO party/multiplayer as well, my PSN handle is cbrd1025.
7  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Anime/Manga Journal on: November 13, 2012, 11:59:43 AM
Good luck with the manga then. Because it has the exact same problem with the bonus prize being everything's in black and white. That said, you should check out the manga since despite the anime's 'ending' dicking itself over the story doesn't actually stop there or even go there (last two or three episodes were a cop-out ending much like the second season of the original FMA anime).

Ah, I was wondering about that. The ending def. feels like it had an abrupt ending. I wonder if their production team was thinking as they approached the last few episodes with, "Crap. We weren't green lighted for another season. We better end this yoma claymore awaken fest now." Reading the manga sounds like quite the challenge after the way you put it, haha.

Also why didn't anybody tell me that Studio 4C were handling the new Thundercats anime. That's grounds for a three episode test right there.

Oh man, it's awesome. If you grew up in the 80's watching Saturday morning in your transformers, gi joe, he-man, or whatever pijamas you had -- you were pumped whenever Thundercats came on. "Thunder..... Thunder.... Thundercats.... HOOOOOOO!!!!!!" Heh. It's a decent anime. Studio 4C respected it's origin roots and most of the characters look and act the same. One small tidbit, in the first episode or so Lion-o's dad is actually voiced by the original English voice from the 80s. How cool is that? In any case, I like the animation, the music score is top notch too. Worth checking out if you can stream the show on Amazon Prime, Hulu, or Netflix if you got it. I was DVRn' the show until I moved recently. Episodes are released sporadically, so it might be better to wait until a season is released.
8  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: The NEW Game Journal on: November 13, 2012, 11:34:27 AM
I'm thoroughly enjoying Gungnir. I held off on buying it for a while due to my backlog of games. I snatched it up when it dipped temporarily to $14.99 on Amazon. It's a cool SRPG and also my first Department of Heaven title.

The game reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre in terms of gameplay, classes, political intrique and so forth. My only complaint so far is that the game is linear and moves quickly from battlefield to battlefield. Since I can only dispatch 3-5 characters in one battle and only having room for 15 characters for my total army size, I feel many of my characters are underdeveloped. One of my matches I was outmatched and basically slaughtered. Fortunately, the game most of the time allows characters to "retreat" instead of a straight death (but sometimes that is the case). The injured character stays injured for a battle or two until returning to 100% strength. The risk of placing an injured soldier in battle is that they could die if beaten in battle.

Small complaints aside on logistics, this is a great game I can't let down.

Finally got around to watching all of Claymore on Blu-Ray. The series was epic. I reminded me of a all female cast version of Berserk. Although one of my biggest frustrations was figuring out which claymore was which. There were so many of them and they all referred to each other for the most part by their rank in the organization (i.e. 1-47). Tackle that on with the blue/gray/dark mono-chromatic color scheme it's a bit of a challenge. Sticking points aside, it was a great action fast paced series. Highly recommend to all who haven't seen it yet.
10  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: Diablo 3? on: October 12, 2012, 06:26:06 PM
I know Blizzard has their hands full with releasing their upcoming WoW expansion "Pandaria" and two expansions, "Heart of the Swarm" and "Legacy of the Void" for SCII. I wonder what are the chances are Blizzard will release an expansion for D3 next summer/fall? I know the most recent patch allowed for further levels beyond 60 which will buy the game some more playtime, but I know gamers still have remaining questions about the game that many hardcore Diablo fans are frustrated with and want to see fixed if to remain playing the game.

I remember way back in 2001, "Lord of Destruction" came out a year after the release of D2 and they fixed a lot of issues that were leftover from the launch of D2. The expansion was quality and sold like hotcakes. If they repeat this again with an expansion to D3 they could retain legacy fans and keep the game from fading into the background for a few years. Funny, actually I noticed that D2 is still going on Battle.net. They just reset the leveling ladder earlier this year.

Although I'm loyal to their close niche series, however I would be open to Blizzard introducing a completely different game that could potentially build into another series. Maybe even a game that doesn't require you to constantly on life support to Battle.net. And for the love of god.... don't take ten years to release a new title. The gap between D2 and D3 felt long.
11  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Suikoden 6, Breath of Fire 6, and Wild Arms 6... on: October 01, 2012, 02:07:04 PM
Methinks what you really want is a game that creates new game development ideas, but not necessarily one that requires "high quality standards."

Yes, you're correct. I was trying to drive at that simply, but my thoughts got muddled on quality standards. That aside, the love I had of Suikoden 1 was the innovative battle styles that carried over into the game: i.e. army battles, one on one battles, and six player turn based battles and renovating the castle with shops and a bath house. I would like to see Suikoden innovate again, but it sounds like this may not happen as the development team was disbanded.

Arg. I waited for the longest time to pick up this game. I recently purchased and downloaded the game for my PS Vita while I was on vacation in Europe the last two weeks in Sept.. Ah well. The game still looks great, it's just the menu text that appears a little fuzzy in the PSP download. Thanks Yggdrasil for the comparison screens.
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Suikoden 6, Breath of Fire 6, and Wild Arms 6... on: October 01, 2012, 01:31:53 PM
With the time gone by since these series fifth installment, at this point... I would be more interested in a reboot/remake of their first games. Interestingly enough, I recently read a retroreview at RPGamer for Suikoden that got me thinking quite a bit about the first Suiko game. At the time Suikoden 1 came out there weren't many rpgs out for the ps1 at all, so the game had a lot to work with. I liked how they broke tradition with jrpgs and introduced new cross-gameplay interactions that were innovative at the time. I loved the storyline and character development with the core group members on top of it. If these series are brought back with a sixth installment, I would like to see higher standards of a highly polished game that push quality new development standards.

I didn't play past Breath of Fire 3 and Wild Arms 2, so I can't add much to the discussion of those series aside Suikoden which I played and beat 1-5.

Bottomline: I guess you could say from my thoughts is that if these companies want to add a sixth installment then make the game well on all levels that balance the old and the new. Develop an intriguing storyline, character development, quality maps, dungeons, etc. that compliment the old, while introducing quality camera angles and more. A good comparison for me is they way the Ys series have been ported to the PSP in recent years with quality translations, a new game engine, redesigned menus and maps with Ys: Foliage Ocean in Celceta (remake of Ys Iv: Dawn of Ys/Mask of the Sun). I'm praying that XSEED will confirm officially that they're working an adaption for the U.S. PS Vita soon.

I'm bummed as well. I only started visiting Anoop's website within the last month after I saw RPGfan recommend several of his stories as sources for jrpgs. Oh, and If anyone is interested to see how his site evolved over the years check out http://web.archive.org/web/20030405083343/http://www.andriasang.com/. The Never Ending Story

Epic! Cheesy German synth-keys soundtrack? Check. Cheesy set designs? Check. Cheesy dialog? Check. Cheesy old-school special effects? Check. I watched this movie heavily when I was kid. Falcor!!!!!!!!!!! Atreyu!!!!!! Lol...  So many good memories watching this.

My guilty pleasure was "13th warrior" with Antonio Banderas. Not his biggest film, but I enjoyed the Norse myth themes and the character development of the 13 warriors. If there was a movie that reminded of RPG elements made to film it would be this one. Recruiting 13 bad asses to take on the evil "fire serpent"? Awesome.

Another strong follow-up to that one would be "Dune." David Lynch loathes this film and painfully regrets making the film, but to me it was an epic sci-fi film that relied heavily on the canon written by Frank Herbert. Highly recommended if anyone has not seen it. I went on to read all the Dune books after this.
